Free Haircuts on a Red Chair

Last summer, Katie Steller was on her way to work. She stopped at a traffic light, where a man, in his 60s, looking out of luck, was sitting alone. She rolled down her window.

“Hey!” she shouted. “ I’m driving around giving free haircuts. Do you want one right now?”

The man, missing a few teeth, paused and laughed. “Actually,” he said, “I have a funeral (葬礼) to go to this week. I was really hoping to get a haircut.”

Then, Steller unloaded a red chair from the car. The man, named Edward, took a seat. As Steller was cutting his curly graying hair, he told her about growing up in Mississippi, about moving to Minnesota, and how he still talked to his mom over phone every day.

To date, Steller has given 30 or so such haircuts to people around the city. They are all living on the margins, and she is aware of the power of her work.

“It’s more than a haircut,” she says. “I want it to be a gateway, to show value and respect, but also to get to know people.”

Steller knows that a haircut can change a life. One changed hers: As a teen, she suffered from ulcerative colitis (溃疡性结肠炎) that was so serious, her hair thinned severely. Seeing this, her mother arranged for Steller’s first professional haircut.

“To sit down and have somebody look at me and talk to me like a person and not just an illness, it helped me feel cared about and less alone,” she says.

After that, Steller knew she wanted to have her own hair salon so she could help people feel the way she’d felt that day. Not long after finishing cosmetology school (美容学校) in 2016, she realized her dream. Two years later, she began what she now calls her Red Chair Project, reaching out to people on the streets.

Steller said, “I can’t fix their problems, but maybe I can help them feel less alone for a moment.” Steller listens to people’s stories of loss, addiction, and struggle to get back on their feet.

An offshoot of the Red Chair Project is the Steller Kindness Project, in which people who commit acts of kindness are invited for a free makeover (美容) at Steller’s salon. In exchange, they tell their stories, which Steller shares on her website. Her hope is that by reading about kind acts, others will be inspired to do their own.

So far, it’s working. “You have no idea what people are going to do with the kindness that you give to them,” says Steller.

The third-generation hybrid rice which was developed by Yuan Longping, the “father of hybrid rice”, and his team underwent its first public yield monitoring from Monday to Tuesday and achieved high output. The final yield of the tested variety, G3-1S/P19, came to 1046.3 kg per mu (about 667 square meters), based on two plots of land in Qingzhu Village under the city of Hengyang in central China’s Hunan Province.

“Some previous high-yielding hybrid rice varieties in China took 160 to even 180 days from sowing to harvesting, while the figure was shortened to around 125 days for the new variety. This is one of the most important characteristics of the third-generation hybrid rice that can reduce the use of pesticides(杀虫剂) and fertilizers（肥料）, thus reducing cost and improving production efficiency.” said Qian Qian, the deputy director of the China National Rice Research Institute.

Unlike the previous two generations that required a large amount of water and fertilizers as well as demanding growing conditions and technological support, the third-generation hybrid rice is easier to be cultivated (种植) by ordinary farmers. So the soil, altitude and climate of the test site were not “ideal conditions” carefully selected beforehand but were close to the paddies of ordinary farmers.

Nowadays, China’s average yield of rice is about 500 kg per mu. Ordinary farmers can produce 600 kg to 700 kg of rice per mu by growing some excellent second-generation hybrid rice varieties. However, under the same planting conditions and environment, the yield of the third-generation hybrid rice could reach 800 kg per mu. China now feeds around 20 percent of the world’s population with less than 9 percent of the world’s arable (可耕种的) land.

At present, Yuan’s team has nine third-generation hybrid rice combinations under trial, which are expected to achieve commercial seed production in the following three to four years and hope to apply the technology into the research of sea rice. The third-generation hybrid rice has the comprehensive strength to promote a greener and more sustainable development of China’s rice production with higher quality and yield.

I decided to ski to the North Pole.It was after I met with an advertisement in a newspaper looking for people to join a team to ski 350 miles to the North Pole.Back in 1996,there had never been a woman from the UK who had accomplished this challenge.I wondered what it would be like to survive in temperatures cold enough to freeze your flesh in seconds,so I sent off the application form.
