When Christmas rolled around, I always got the tree up. And Christmas Eve found me placing an envelope on the tree.
It was just a small, white envelope with a note of what I had done, stuck among the branches of our Christmas tree. It all began because my husband Mike hated Christmas. Oh, not the true meaning of Christmas, but the commercial aspects of it, overspending, the gifts given in desperation because you couldn’t think of anything else.
Knowing he felt this way, I decided one year to bypass (避开) the usual shirts, sweaters, ties and so on. I tried to find a special present just for Mike. The inspiration came in an unusual way.
Our son, Kevin, who was 12 that year, was wrestling at the junior level at the school he attended, and shortly before Christmas, there was a non-league match against a team Sponsored by an inner-city church.
These youngsters, dressed in sneakers so ragged (褴褛的) that shoes seemed to be the only thing holding them together, presented a sharp contrast to our boys in the spiffy blue and gold uniforms and sparkling new wrestling hoes. As the match began I was alarmed to see that the other team was wrestling without headgear, a kind of light helmet designed to protect a wrestler’s cars. It was a luxury the ragged team obviously could not afford. Well, we ended up defeating them. We took every weight class.
Mike, seated beside me, shook his head sadly, “I wish one of them could have won,” he said. They have a lot of potential, but losing like this could take the heart right out of them.”Mike loved kids, all kids, and he knew them, having coached little league football, baseball and lacrosse.

Rose was an unfortunate girl. When she was 15, her parents were lost to a flood, leaving her with her grandma, who was over 60.
Grandma had to work hard to support the family and pay her tuition fees. Three years later, Rose was admitted to a college. Unfortunately, the cost of ten thousand yuan a year at college was too much for Grandma. She couldn’t afford it even if she worked day and night. Rose decided to give up the chance to go to college and work at home.
Rose’s grandmother struck her with a shaking hand and said, “Never give up. Everything will be all right.” So Rose left her hometown and set foot on the road to study.
Rose studied very hard and she saved every penny. It was in her second semester that she received a letter from her grandmother. During the holidays, she had heard Grandma talk about her plan to work as a babysitter. At that time, she persuaded Grandma that no one would hire her at such an old age. Unexpectedly, Grandma told her in the letter that she actually worked as a babysitter in a person’s home. Rose smiled in relief. What Grandma didn’t tell her was that a man failing in his business had promised to help Rose’s study when she was reduced to begging. From then on, Rose, received the tuition fees and living costs provided by her grandmother in time. Every time she received the money, her heart would shake. What she was holding in her hands was not money, but Grandma’s warm heart.
One day after she started her junior year, her grandmother’s employer found her at school and told her that her grandmother had passed away. Her heart was broken when she heard the news. The employer, Eric, a young man aged 37 or 38, told her with tears in his eyes, “You have the greatest grandma in the world, girl. Don’t disappoint your grandma in the future. I’ll cover all your tuition if you come to work for my business when you finish your studies. That’s a promise.”

Having struggled with financial difficulties for six months and failing to find a way out, I had to close my technology writing business. Fortunately, I found a new job as a salesperson and soon got a client. At the time, I wondered if it was too good to be true.
By the second month, something didn’t seem right, and I developed a bad feeling about the client and the work. When the third month’s check didn’t arrive on time, I sent the client an e-mail to find out what was going on. But there was no reply. Then I sent another e-mail, and another. The check never arrived, and I never heard from the client again. With no hope in sight, I hit rock bottom. Panic replaced cautious optimism along with my last self-confidence.
I hid myself from friends and locked myself in my room. One night, the phone rang. The call was from Eric, a friend of mine from high school. When he was in high school, he told me many times about his parents’ divorce and his loss of confidence in the college entrance examination. During the difficult time, I gave him much comfort and encouragement. Later, he went to college and was always grateful for what I had done.
After the greetings, I told my problems and challenges, hoping my friend would say something comforting. What I didn’t expect was a string of sharp words. “What is wrong with you? You can do anything you want to do,” he said. “You are a writer, so start writing. Write for magazine.” “Write for magazine? Are you out of your mind? I don’t know the first thing about writing for magazine, let alone write things that anyone would want to read. And I have to know where I can send an application form-to what magazine and to what editor,” I shouted at him.

Flora and her dad were going to move to a new house. Friday, a truck would come for the furniture. Then the next week, workers would dig up the yard. Where Flora and Papi had grown flowers, the workers would put in a parking lot.
“Our poor flowers,” Flora sighed to herself, looking at the bright purple blooms and soft and green weed coming out of the soil. She sat outside, selling things she didn’t want to take to the new house. Beside her hung a sign that said “Yard Sale”. Her yard sale was the first one of the year on Apple Street, and several of her neighbors had come over to have a look.
Papi came out. He held a dish piled high with nuts. “Here’s a snack for everyone,” he said. Flora’s dad loved sharing things. Most of all he loved sharing jokes. He smiled when he saw Flora’s sign and winked (眨眼) at the customers gathered around.
“Yard sale? What are you selling yards of? Or meters of?” he asked. “Ribbons? Carpet? Cloth? Where’s your ruler?”
“Not that kind of yard,” joked Mrs. Ciro. “It must be this nice grassy yard we’re standing on that’s for sale.”
“How much for the weed by your sign?” asked Mr. Johnson, joking.
Flora gave no response. She didn’t think their jokes were funny. She felt extremely in low spirits at the thought that the lovely yard was already sold, and soon their poor flowers and weed would be ruined.” Deader than a doorknob,’ Papi’s papi would say”, she thought to herself bitterly, “What’s worse, the new house doesn’t have any flowers at all.”
With a sigh, Flora dug her heels deep into the grass. But when she felt the soft earth move under her heels, she knew what she could do.
She whispered her clever plan to Papi. He nodded, smiling, and sat down in her seat instead.

May 18, 1986, was the kind of beautiful, sunny day that regularly brought the Rodriguez family to Santa Catalina Island for some fishing on their nine-metre pleasure boat, the DC Too. They spent the day fishing in the Pacific Ocean, then left the island in the early evening.
Soon thick fog rolled in. Louise fell into a light sleep beside her five-year-old sister, Trisha, at a table on the boat’s lower deck. Their father’s sharp orders frightened her awake: “Get out of the boat. It’s sinking!” Louise pushed her sister into the cold, dark water. The girls were followed by their mother, Petra Rodriguez. Both girls wore life jackets, but the adults did not. Within seconds, the boat capsized, leaving just the tip of its bow in the air.
After some time, her father told them he would swim for help. Louise watched him disappear into the darkness. A while later, her mother went still. Then her sister died, too.
Pisano and Strasser, both 25, were going on a fishing expedition. The fog was so thick that they couldn’t even see the stern(船尾) of the boat. They decided to try one more spot before going home. Late that afternoon, the fog cleared and the sun started shining. On their return voyage, about 11 kilometres away from Catalina Island, Pisano noticed something yellow floating in the water.
Strasser steered(驾驶) the boat closer and Pisano jumped into the water. He swam toward the figure and grabbed the life jacket. Fortunately, Louise was saved and quickly sent to hospital. The little girl soon recovered, but the search for Louise’s father, sister and mother was in vain.
Louise was adopted by her aunt and uncle. She attended college, got married in 2013 and gave birth to a son. In her late 20s, Louise began to wonder about her rescuers. She even tried to find them but no luck. One day, Louise came across a magazine article featuring Pisano talking about the 1986 rescue.

Little Tom lived with his poor grandmother Donna in a village. Every day, Tom sold potatoes grown by Donna in a market.
One day, an old foreigner aroused Tom’s curiosity. He frequently visited Tom’s stall (摊位) but didn’t buy. The next day, the man passed from one vendor (小贩) to the next, waving a bag around. But he didn’t visit Tom’s stall that day. Out of curiosity, Tom asked a vendor nearby to temporarily look after his stall. Then, he followed the foreigner.
The man went back to his broken-down house near the market and took several old medals from his bag. “Wow!” Tom said. “I won them in my own country,” the man said proudly, then asking why Tom came here. Tom explained, “I’m wondering why you didn’t visit my stall today.” “Oh, I don’t need potatoes. I need firewood, so I walked around the market looking for someone who would buy these medals and give me money in exchange,” he lied.
Tom left and brought back many potatoes from his stall, saying, “If you don’t have money, you can’t buy food. Keep my grandma’s potatoes.” But the man insisted he had enough food. Tom went back, upset; he could see the man was hungry and weak.
The third day, the man reached the market, selling medals again. He valued them, which were his honors. But after a disaster, now he had to sell them to survive. He looked weaker. Tom packed some potatoes, walking towards him again. From his conversations with vendors, Tom found him trying to sell medals for food! But no one believed his medals were true.
Disappointed, the man sat alone by the roadside. Tom approached him, saying, “I saw it! Why didn’t you let me help you?” Almost crying, he said, “I’m sorry, but I was too embarrassed to ask for your help. Now could you give me your potatoes in exchange for the medals?”

    7.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“Be quiet.” No one actually ever said that to me — in fact, it was usually the opposite “Speak up.” “What did you say?” “I couldn’t understand you.” But every time someone told me to be louder, to be clearer, I wanted to shut my mouth and never open it again.
Years of living with a lisp (口齿不清) had taught me that it was better to say nothing than to speak and risk being misunderstood, leading to embarrassment and awkwardness. As a result of my silence, I felt distanced from most of my peers, having only a few people I felt were friends. “Kathryn? Oh, she’s quiet.” That’s what most people would say when they thought of me. “Quiet” might as well have been part of my name. I was okay with that. I didn’t need to be heard.
September of last year that all changed.
I started my first day of creative writing class with Ms. Haist. She is one of those teachers you don’t feel frightened to approach; you know she will help you if you need it. I had expected to fill out plot diagrams and learn the proper way to punctuate dialogue. However, every day we would be given a different writing prompt (提示词) and then, if we wished, we could share what we had written with the class. I remember sitting and listening to others read their work, and I distinctly remember thinking: That will never be me. I’ll never have the courage to do that.
Then, one day in October, I was really pleased with what I had written, so pleased that I wanted to share. I remember my heart pounding in my chest as I raised my hand to read, and those urgent little voices in my mind listing all the reasons why it wasn’t a good idea: They won’t understand you. You have a lisp, remember? Besides, your writing isn’t that good. Be quiet. Be quiet. I was about to withdraw my hand when I met Ms. Haist’s encouraging eyes.

A black boy guarded the oak barrels in his father’s winery. Every morning he wiped up every barrel with rag, and then put them in order row upon row. To his anger, the wind reeled the barrels here and there overnight.
The boy was so angry that he wrote a letter to the wind on every barrel with crayon, “Please don’t blow down my barrels.”
After seeing that, his father asked the boy with a smile, “Can the wind read your request?”
The little boy said, “I don’t know, but I have no way of how to deal with the wind.”
The next morning, when the little boy ran to look at the barrels, he found that the goddamned wind ignored his request, still blowing the barrels here and there. The little boy felt very wronged and burst into tears. His father stroked his head gently and said, “Son, don’t be sad. We may have no way of how to deal with the wind, but we may have ways for you, so we can have our own methods to conquer the wind.” Then the little boy dried his tears and sat near the barrel to think over and over.

    9.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整短文。
Tina was seventeen years old and always wore a bright smile. This may not seem that unusual except that she suffered from a condition that left her muscles stiff and,for the most part, unmanageable. Because she had trouble speaking, it was this bright smile that reflected her true personality—a great kid. Tina used a walker most of the time to help her through the crowded school hallways. A lot of times people didn’t speak to her. Maybe it was because she looked different and the rest of the students didn’t know how to approach her. Tina usually broke the ice with people she met in the halls with a big “ Hi.”
One day,the assignment was to memorize three stanzas(诗节)of the poem“       Don’t Quit.” I only made the assignment worth ten points since I figured most of my students wouldn’t do it anyway. When I was in school and a teacher assigned a ten-point homework assignment, I would probably have blown it off myself. So I wasn’t expecting much from today’s teenagers either. Tina was in the class, and I noticed a look on her face that was different from the normal bright smile. The look was one of worry. “Don’t worry, Tina,” I thought to myself, “it’s only ten points.”
The day the assignment came due arrived and as I went through my roster (花名册)my expectations were met, as one by one each student failed to recite the poem.“Sorry, Mr. Krause,” was the standard reply. It’s only worth ten points anyway...right?“ Finally, in frustration and half kidding, I declared that the next person who didn’t recite the poem perfectly had to drop on the floor and give me ten push-ups(俯卧撑).

In late December, the cow path near our house in Tennessee was still covered with leaves, but I knew snow would be falling soon enough. My younger brother, Buddy Earl, and I were on an important mission: Go to Uncle Tommie’s place and get a goose(鹅). The hiking over Little Mountain and getting there would be worth it. Uncle Tommie raised the best geese around, and he’d offered to give us one for Christmas dinner.
Uncle Tommie met us at the door. “I’m not rushing you boys,” he said, “but as light snow started, you’d better get the goose and head home.” It didn’t take me long to pick up a goose from his yard. Buddy and I said a quick thank you and goodbye. The snow came down harder, wind blowing every way.
“I’m as cold as ice. How about you?” asked Buddy.
I tapped the goose’s head. “I wish we had feathers to keep us warm like you,” I said. “Or heavier coats.”
“Doug, I’m freezing,” Buddy said. I could hardly hear him over the wind and my own chattering teeth. “I think we should go back.” The idea was attractive, but we were closer to home than to Uncle Tommie’s house. We had to push on.
I held the goose closer to my chest. The bird was the only warm thing about me. I stepped in front of my brother. “Buddy, open your coat!” “Are you crazy?” He asked. “I’ll lose the little warmth I have.” When he saw I was serious, he slowly unzipped (拉开……的拉链) his coat and opened it. I placed the warm goose inside his coat and zipped it back up. “Make sure you keep the goose’s head out so it can breathe.” Buddy sighed happily. My plan was working.

    参考答案
    1.
That’s when the idea for his present came. That afternoon, I went to a local sporting goods store and bought an assortment of wrestling headgear and shoes and sent them anonymously to the inner-city church. On Christmas Eve, I placed the envelope on the tree, the note inside telling Mike what I had done and that this was his gift from me. His smile was the brightest thing about Christmas that year and in succeeding years.
Feeling their dad’s happiness, my children joined me. Each of our children, unbeknownst to the others, had placed an envelope on the tree for their dad. The tradition has grown and someday will expand even further with our grandchildren standing around the tree with wide-eyed anticipation watching as their fathers take down the envelope. Mike’s spirit, like the Christmas spirit, will always be with us.

Inspired by Eric’s words, I started searching for magazines the next day and finally found one that accepted online contributions with various topics. Then I began to prepare my application form.
On finishing the application form I sent it to the editor. Luckily, two days later I received a positive response and an invitation to write. At first, I only wrote articles I was expert in. Gradually, I began trying new types. One day, much to my amazement, one of my articles appeared on the first page of the magazine! Since then, I have been on my way to becoming an excellent writer. They would come along to the new house. The others she lined up near her sign. All the work finished, she came back. “Thanks, Papi,” Flora said with smile, taking her seat again.
Now she was ready for selling the yard and joking with customers. Mr. Johnson was picking some toys from the stand. Mrs. Ciro picked several story books. And the two asked jokingly again, “But how much for the yard?” This time, Flora smiled. Her smile was just like Papi’s. “Zero cents!” she said, “Pick any pot of yard you like!” Hearing this, all the neighbors burst into laughter. “Now our yard can survive,” Flora thought to herself delightedly, “both in my new house and on Apple Street” she added.

For a very long time, she had been expecting a chance to meet Pisano and Strasser personally and express her gratitude to her rescuers. Without any delay, she contacted the magazine, asking for the detailed information of Pisano. That evening, Louise finally dialed the number. When there came the voice of Pisano, Louise could feel her heart beating wildly. Though it was about 1,000 kilometers from where Pisano lived, Louise was determined to fly to meet Pisano.
Louise recognized her rescuer the moment she saw Pisano. Taking a deep breath, Louise stepped forward and grasped the hands of Pisano tightly. “I’m Louise”, she said, her voice trembling with excitement and tears rolling down her cheeks. 7.I swallowed the voices down and let my real voice come out. At first, my voice was very low. I read my articles carefully. After I finished the first paragraph fluently, my classmate’s eyes all looked at me with affirmation. Having finished reading this article, I was praised by Ms. Hester for the content that I wrote and the changes that I made in class. It was the first time that I had received warm applause from my teachers and classmates. When I went home, a card was found in my notebook with a sentence saying “everything is possible”. There was no doubt that it was given to me by Ms. Hester.
Soon I was reading out loud nearly every day. In the morning, I would practice my favorite novels near the grove at school, because I wanted to realize my dream. My dream is to become an announcer in the next semester, which would entitle me to share the students’ writing and my favorite articles. In class, I tried my best to seize every opportunity to improve myself. Gradually, I began to have normal conversations with my classmates and got along well with them. Everything in life was becoming more and more beautiful.

To my surprise, Tina was the next. She rose from her chair and limped to stand in front of the whole class with the help of her walker. Then she started to recite the poem emotionally, in a rich, sonorous and almost melodious voice. The last stanza, however, seemed a little hard for her. She stammered for a few seconds, only to utter some fractured sentences. To our surprise, she threw her walker away and did ten push-ups, clenching her teeth. Considering her physical disability, I never thought she would take it so seriously. I told Tina she didn't have to do this for I was just kidding, but she ignored my words.
When she finished, a student asked “Tina, why did you do that? It’s only worth ten points!” She replied with her familiar, bright smile, “I just want to be a normal person like you.” Everyone lapsed into the silence for a while. Because of her disability, some students avoided her deliberately while some are overly concerned about her. It never occurred to us that we needed to treat her equally like a normal girl. On that day, Tina not only got her nine points out of ten, but also won respect and support from her classmates.
