Paragliding is a kind of flying, but instead of the wing being made of metal, wood or plastic, it is made of nylon or polyester. The wing is attached to a harness by lines where a pilot sits, similar to a parachute.

    Is it safe?

Paragliding, is as safe as sailing and deep-sea diving. The big advantage is that it’s probably the slowest form of aviation, so if you do crash, you'll hit the ground quite gently! It’s a very relaxing sport as you're mostly sitting down. Yet, you’ll probably experience pain in some muscles you didn’t know you had while learning, but many of those will be due to the walk up the training hill to launch.

    Where do I learn?

There are lots of schools, mainly based inland by appropriate hills or mountains, and there are also schools on the coast near spectacular cliffs. These are very attractive, though the prospect of landing in the sea seems to discourage beginners! It takes seven days to get your basic license; then you’re free to fly independently at

    高二年级英语试题(第 3 页 共 12 页)

    sites across the country.

    What do I need?

Pilots normally wear warm clothes in case they get very high up, and a helmet in case they stumble on landing. In terms of gear, schools supply basic training, canopies, harnesses, etc. However, you'll probably want to buy your own more sophisticated equipment, which you’ll be able to choose much better once you’ve tried some out on your course.

    Who can do it?

There’s no upper age limit provided your instructor judges you capable, but the youngest is 14. Anybody with good eyesight and good balance is a potential paraglider pilot.

Flying a paraglider is a great sport. We hope to see you in the air with us this season!

21Which would be the best heading for Paragraph 1?

AWhat is paragliding? BWho invented paragliding?

CHow is paragliding special? DWhy is paragliding popular?

22According to the passage, paragliding is____________ .

Aexciting but tiring Bsafe and relaxing

Cattractive but expensive Dfast and challenging

23What can we know from the passage?

AFit people of any age can take up paragliding.

BMost paragliding schools are situated by the sea.

CPilots need to buy basic equipment on their training course.

DLearners can fly on their own after at least a week’s training.

    B

Jean Craighead George was born in Washington, DCin 1919. Her interest in nature and animals came early and maybe from her father. He worked for the National Forest Service. The family spent a lot of time in wooded areas. Jean and her twin brothers learned how to build shelters and find food in the woods.

Her brothers trained falcons (猎鹰). Jean said they gave her a falcon to train when she was 13 years old. Later the main character in one of her books develops a close relationship with a falcon.

She and her family started exploring wilderness areas all over the country. The family had more than 170 animals, although not all at once. The pets were always free to stay or go.

Her career in children’s literature began in 1948 with the publication of her first book, Vulpes: The Red Fox. Eleven years later came My Side of the Mountain, one of the best loved children’s books ever.

It tells the story of Sam Gribley who escapes the busy life of New York City. He goes to live in the wilderness of the Catskill Mountains. Sam makes friends with several animals, including a falcon he calls Frightful. Jean Craighead George said she wrote it to tell about all the wonderful adventures she experienced as a child in the woods.

In 1973, Jean Craighead George won a Newberry Medal for Julie of the Wolves. She had earlier travelled to Barrow, Alaska and met with scientists there. They taught her how to communicate with wolves. The author said she was finally successful with a beautiful female wolf. She knew then she wanted to write about a little Eskimo girl lost on the frozen land. Julie survives by learning how to talk to the wolves. They then help protect her.

Jean Craighead George hoped her works in fiction would help children enjoy the wilderness and also protect it. Her own children follow in her footsteps. Her daughter writes books about nature for children. One son is a whale researcher. The other studies birds.

Jean Craighead George died at a hospital in New York City, where she lived most of her adult life.

On Nov.7 2020 Chris Nikic did something incredible. He became the first person with Down syndrome( 唐氏综合症) to complete one of the toughest athletic competitions in the world-the Ironman triathlon.

Nikic started the triathlon just before 6 a. m. on Nov 7, entering the water in Panama City, Florida, for his swim. During the biking section his bike crashed and he skinned his knee. And during a water break, he was bitten by fire ants. But he never gave up. He finished the triathlon in 16 hours,46 minutes and 9 seconds--with just 14 minutes to spare before the cut-off time.

For two years, Nikic trained for the event, using a strategy he developed with his father which they call the “1% better each day principle” Every day, Nikic and his father would strive to become one percent better. Nikic's father said it works well for “a young man with Down syndrome. "On his website, Nikic outlines six strategies that helped him achieve his goal of completing the Ironman triathlon: Health (body), health (mind) friends(soul), focus on the positive, help someone else and pass it on.

Nikic originally started exercising in order to recover from ear surgery and get in shape. Now he has other goals: to live independently and one day have a big house and a nice car and to get married.

Training for the Ironman triathlon has helped make his dream come true. In fact, he recently bought a white Chevy and has been offered speaking gigs that may enable him to save up enough money to buy a house.

His next goals are to learn how to drive and he has been invited to compete in the US Special Olympics in 2022.

I have frequently taught Research Methods and Design to college students at several institutions. I love teaching this course. One reason, of course, is that I enjoy thinking about research methodology (方法学) and sharing it with others. The other reason, however, is the obvious impact that it has on students. Every term, one (if not more) student tells me how taking this course has affected him/her: “I used to just read articles and believe what they said, but now I find myself asking ‘Is this true? How do they know? Is this a well-designed study?” That is what I want the students to achieve in this course.

This brings to mind something written by Dorothy L. Sayers in 1948. One of her books, The Lost Tools of Learning speaks to Sayers’ thoughts on education. “By teaching our young men and women to read, we have left them at the mercy of the printed words. By the invention of the film and the radio, we have made certain that no dislike for reading shall protect them from the constant battery of words, words, words. They do not know what the words mean: they are victims to words in their emotions instead of being the masters of them in their intelligence.”

We are well past the 1940s, but her observation is still relevant. Sayers’ point is well taken. In the world of 24-hour news and social media that often resembles (类似) the Wild West, the ability to carry out evaluations has never been more important. In order to resist the distortions with which we are constantly bombed in the media, as well as be able to present a persuasive argument, we must be able to reason well, and think and give a judgement carefully.

    高二年级英语试题(第 7 页 共 12 页)

When my students begin the Research Methods and Design course, they are generally not content to read all those research articles I give. However, by the end of the course, they are excited about their newly obtained abilities.

    AThinking critically. BReading deeply.

    CDesigning studies well. DQuestioning themselves.

33What did Sayers imply about education?

    CPersuasive arguments. DMisleading information.

35Why does the author write the text?

When Micah was a child, I used to do many things with her. Later, I got promoted and was always on constant business holidays. 3 years' devotion to work resulted in my absence from her life and now she was a teenage girl. Recently, I eventually managed to have abundant time to accompany her.

For the last few weeks, Micah had watched mockingbirds make a nest in a tree and lay eggs there. Sometimes, I came to accompany her without being invited. But whenever I made an attempt to break the ice, “I'm good” was about all she said to me. Code for “Leave me alone”.

“Why doesn't she want to do things with me?” I thought as I set the table for dinner one evening, hoping for an emotion bridge to reappear between us. Did she feel hurt with my long absence or feel ignored ? Lost in thought, I was seeking to mend the relationship.

“Mom!” Micah yelled suddenly. “Come quick!”

Surprised, I rushed out, only to find a little baby bird on the ground, weak and helpless. My eyes went to the branches above.

“The wind must have blown him out of the nest.” I said.

“No, it was Mr. Whiskers -our cat. You let him go outside!” Micah said, a bit annoyed.

Looking at the nest without the parents, “I'm sorry.” I said and put the bird in my palm cautiously and gently. She didn't respond, but did not refused my offer to help, either. Deciding to take care of the little baby till it became independent, I placed it in its nest. “What should we do next?” I asked. No response again. Instead, Micah went inside and hopped on her iPad. “Bird videos?” I asked. “Yes, I'm finding out what to feed it,” she said seriously.

    注意:1.续写词数应为 150 左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

She was more focused than ever.__________________________________________
