Edgar Allan Poe was an American writer who helped shape the course of American literature. His life was full of tragedies, but he had a great influence on the 19th-century American literature and continues to influence writers to this day.
The early life of Edgar Allan Poe was quite unhappy.Born in 1809,Poe was not yet three years old when his parents died.Adopted by a wealthy family,he got into trouble at school. He entered the United States Military Academy at West Point, but he dropped out without graduating. His misery (不幸) continued to his adult life.Later, because of a failed marriage,he suffered from mental illness. He was so upset about real life that he turned to writing.Expressing himself in an unreal and imaginary world was his only comfort.
The tragedies in Poe’s life influenced the tone, style and contents of his writing. His stories usually include death, which help build his reputation as a master of “dark” literature. In his The Tell-Tale Heart, the main character goes crazy and kills his roommate while in The Black Cat,the main character kills his cat in a fit of madness.
Poe died at the age of 40 in 1849.His life is short, but his influence is very great.Poe is credited with (被誉为) creating crime fiction, and many say he contributed greatly to the appearance of science fiction.Fascinated (着迷) by the scientific theories and new inventions of his time,he wrote about imaginary societies in the future.Writers such as Arthur Conan Doyle, the author of Sherlock Holmes, regarded Poe as the father of detective fiction.Jules Verne,a French writer who helped popularize science fiction, said Poe’s work had a direct influence on the stories he wrote.

There’s a lot we know about eggs:they are great for breakfast and you can cook them in different ways. One topic of debate, however,is why brown chicken eggs usually cost more than white ones.According to Sharman Hickman, the director of Community Outreach and Education for Hickman’s Family Farms, genetics (基因学) not nutrition determines the eggshell’s colour and thus the egg’s price.
The chicken breed (品种) and their genetics decide whether or not hens have pigment (色素) genes, which coat the egg and result in a coloured shell during the egg-laying process.Although all eggs start out white in colour, shell colour can range from white to brown and even blue in some rare breeds,Hickman adds.Breeds such as the Leghorn chicken lays white eggs, while the Orpington lays brown eggs and the Ameraucana produces blue eggs.
Hickman notes that the Leghorn breed is the most efficient egg-laying hen, making it a popular choice for farmers.Hens that produce coloured eggshells, however, tend to be larger and require more feed and energy to create that painted layer.Since those breeds cost more to feed, their eggs are more expensive.
Although eggs sometimes look different and are priced differently,it’s impossible to know their nutritional make-up from the shell colour alone, according to Malina Linkas Malkani, media spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.“Choosing between brown and white eggs is a matter of personal preference,” she says.“But it’s important for people to know that the colour of the eggshell has nothing to do with the egg’s nutrient content or shell thickness.”
What does affect the nutrient content is the specific diet the hen is on,according to Malkani. For example, hens fed with a diet with omega-3s and vitamin D produce eggs that are higher in those specific nutrients. No matter what your preference is,don’t judge an egg by its shell colour.
28.Which of the following is one of the arguments about eggs?
A.Which eggs are difficult to break.
B.How eggs can be cooked healthily.
C.Why coloured eggs are more expensive.
D.What the best time to eat eggs should be.
29.What makes the eggshell colour different?
    A.The hen’s breed.
    B.The size of the hen.
C.The colour of the eggs inside.
D.The length of the laying process.
30.Why do farmers love the Leghorn breed more?
    A.They lay brown eggs.
    B.Their eggs are larger.
    C.Their eggs sell better.
    D.They are productive.
31.What can we learn from Malkani’s words in the last paragraph?
A.It takes efforts to test eggs’ nutrition.
B.It’s meaningless to study an egg’s colour.
    C.Personal preference matters a lot in choice-making.
D.An egg’s nutrition is closely related to the hen’s feed.

    D
Smoking in your own home in Thailand may now be considered a crime,if the smoke is considered harmful to other people in the house.
The new law,Family Protection and Development Promotion Act,aiming at controlling smoking at home which might be hazardous for others’ health living under the same roof, was initiated by the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security and was announced in the Royal Gazette on May 22,2019.It came into force on August 20.
According to the centre for research and knowledge management for tobacco control,at the Faculty of Medical Science of Mahidol University, there are about 4.9 million households where one or more family members smoke. An average of 10.3 million people have unwittingly(不知不觉地) become passive smokers because they’ve been breathing smoke at home.Scientific studies show that passive smokers are at greater risk of being affected by cancer.Of 75 child patients from houses where smoking is practiced,76% of them were found to have nicotine traces in their urine(尿液),with 43% of them having nicotine content exceeding(超过) permissible levels.
Smoking at home also “may lead to physical or emotional violence” because of aggressiveness when there is a lack of smoking, and might as well ruin relationships between smokers and non-smoker family members.
According to the new law, anyone who thinks they are affected by domestic smoking can report to government departments concerned so that officials will be sent to investigate and take legal action against the smokers.Once convicted(证明有罪的),the court may order a person to receive treatment to quit smoking in an attempt to protect the person’s family.

Mail lay scattered across the kitchen table.I couldn’t put off sorting through it any longer.I checked the envelopes, putting aside the ones addressed to my husband.
It had been over three years since Bob had died.To friends and family it looked like I had moved past the worst of my sorrow.I took care of my house, socialised and kept up with community. On the outside everything appeared to be normal. But inside I worried I would never get better, never be myself again. They say sorrow has no set time limit, but I was so tired of feeling empty and hopeless. My sorrow was sharp and fresh as ever.It was like a wall of pressure in my chest, pressing my heart.
I picked up a piece of Bob’s mail and held it out to tear in half, but stopped myself from cutting up the envelope. The letter was from an organisation that funded a Haitian orphanage called My Father’s House. Its founder,Carol Hawthorne, had given a presentation at our church.Bob and I had donated, and Bob ended up on the mailing list to receive the newsletter (通讯) with updates on the children.
I hadn’t read one since Bob died. But just three months before,in January, the country had been hit by a terrible earthquake. In my depressed state,it hadn’t even occurred to me to wonder whether the orphanage had survived.I opened the newsletter and was surprised to find out that My Father’s House was still standing.Of course now it was more crowded than ever.At the bottom of the page was an announcement about an upcoming trip to visit the orphanage in person.“I should go.” The thought wouldn’t leave me.I contacted Carol Hawthorne.“What would I do if I go?” I asked.“Build houses?”
“The Haitian people there are eager to work and they know what they’re doing,” said Carol.“What they need are raw materials, and we provide them.We also visit with the children. We go to clinics and schools, pass out supplies. You’ll be very busy,I promise!” I reserved a seat but didn’t mention it to any of my friends.Just a few weeks later,I was at the airport with seven strangers, waiting to board a plane to Haiti.Even after take-off I wasn’t really sure of what I was doing.
In Haiti we were met by Pastor Ronald Lefranc, the director of My Father’s House.

根据Drayton Manor Theme Park,Staffordshire中的“The new Tamarin Trail takes adventurers through beautiful gardens, allowing kids and adults to come face-to-face with a troop of monkeys.”
根据Thorpe Park,Surrey部分中“Adults from £28,children from £24(under-3s free)”可知,成年人28英镑,三岁以下的孩子免费。
根据文章第二段“He was so upset about real life that he turned to writing.Expressing himself in an unreal and imaginary world was his only comfort.”
根据文章第三段“The tragedies in Poe’s life influenced the tone, style and contents of his writing.”
根据文章最后一段内容和关键句“Poe is credited with creating crime fiction, and many say he contributed greatly to the appearance of science fiction.” 故选A项。
根据第一段中“One topic of debate, however,is why brown chicken eggs usually cost more than white ones.”
根据第二段中“The chicken breed and their genetics decide whether or not hens have pigment genes, which coat the egg and result in a coloured shell during the egg-laying process.” 故选A项。
根据第三段中“Hickman notes that the Leghorn breed is the most efficient egg-laying hen, making it a popular choice for farmers.”
根据最后一段中“What does affect the nutrient content is the specific diet the hen is on,according to Malkani. For example, hens fed with a diet with omega-3s and vitamin D produce eggs that are higher in those specific nutrients.”
根据第二段的“The new law,...aiming at controlling smoking at home which might be hazardous for others’ health living under the same roof, was initiated by the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security”和常识可知,吸烟对人们身体健康有害。
故选A项。
从倒数第二段的“Smoking at home also ‘may lead to physical or emotional violence’...might as well ruin relationships between smokers and non-smoker family members.”
这句也和第三段的“I have three words...”

    58.on/upon 考查介词。 故填on/upon。
have no choice but to do sth意为“除了做某事之外别无选择”,是固定短语。故填to prepare。
“reading from the paper”与forbid是被动关系,且句子描述的是过去的事情,应使用一般过去时的被动语态。故填was forbidden。
故填what。

    写作
    Dear friends,
I am Li Hua.I feel greatly honoured to be here to share with you my opinion about our efforts to build a civilised city.
First, the authorities have launched an activity entitled “Build A Civilised City”.As for me,I begin with small changes, such as obeying traffic rules, using polite languages,no littering,no spitting, etc.I’ll manage my own behaviour and help people around me to form good habits.
Come on,friends.Take action right now!Do remember we can make a big difference if everyone does their bits.
    That’s all.Thanks for listening!
In Haiti we were met by Pastor Ronald Lefranc, the director of My Father’s House.A crowd of children—52 in all—rushed up to greet us.I couldn’t understand the words of the song they sang in Creole, but I didn’t need to with the smiles on their faces. Each child planted a big kiss on my cheek.
Carol and Pastor Ronald led us into the main building.Pastor Ronald told us that there was a collection of tents. Many of these children came to the orphanage after the earthquake. They still didn’t feel safe sleeping under a roof. But there was no sign of fear in the playroom inside.I played dolls and other games.Children I’d just met presented me with pictures they’d drawn and letters written in Creole. In the evening the children gathered in the dining room. They took turns reading aloud and then they all joined in the song. The words were strange, but the tune sounded familiar. They’d lost so much, yet were so joyful.
