Who you are makes a difference

A teacher decided to honour her students by telling them the difference they have made. She presented each of them with a blue ribbon with letters that read, “Who I Am Makes a Difference."

Afterwards, the teacher decided to do a class project to see what kind of influence recognition(赞赏)would have on a community. She gave each of the students three more ribbons and instructed them to spread them and follow up on the results, and report back to the class in a week.

One boy in the class went to a manager in a company, and honoured him for helping him with his career planning. He gave him a blue ribbon and put it on his shirt. Then he gave him two extra ribbons, and said, “Would you please find somebody to honour, give them a blue ribbon, then give them the extra so they can find a third person.”

Later that day, the manager went to see his boss and gave him the gift of the blue ribbon. He told him that he deeply admired him for being a creative genius. His surprised boss accepted it delightedly. The manager placed the blue ribbon right in his boss's jacket above his heart and gave him the last extra ribbon to pass on.

That night, the boss went home to his 14-year-old son and told him about his day. “One of the managers gave me an extra ribbon and asked me to find somebody else to honour and I thought about you.I want to honour you, "said the boss."My days are really hectic and when I come home, I don't pay a lot of attention to you.Sometimes I scream at you for not getting good grades in school and for your bedroom being a mess, but somehow tonight, I just want you to know that you do make a difference to me. You're a great kid, and I love you"

The astonished boy couldn't stop crying. He looked up at his father and said through his tears, I was planning to run away from home tomorrow, Dad, because I didn't think you loved me.Now I will never do that.”

    六、完型填空(12)

(本题12)    You can think of a memory, as a photograph. Our brain is like an app on the phone that stores useful photographs for a long time. But it    44    useless photographs. Some people have always been able to recall (回想起) the smallest details about their lives. The experts are now studying Brad Williams and a woman named AJ. The two share the same talent. The goal of the study is to gain a deeper    45    of memory and how it works.

Dr. James found 51-year-old Williams’ memory to be    46    perfect. He can usually tell you what he did on a certain date 40 years ago. He can also recall what was in the news. He can even tell you what the weather was like.

Dr. James had seen this level of ability before. In 2006, he studied a woman named AJ. She too was able to recall tiny details from her life. These details    47    notes she had written in journals decades earlier.

However, they view the ability differently. Williams enjoys having his memory tested. AJ however, said her memories often flood her mind in an unpleasant way. “Most have called it a gift, but I call it burden,” AJ wrote. “I run my entire life through my head every day and makes me    48   !!!”

Now, doctors are testing Williams and AJ. They want to know what sets the two apart from others. Williams and AJ. both perform well. But they perform best on topics that interest them. This fact causes doubt among some scientists. They suggest that Williams and AJ. are not so special    49   . Some scientists say that people with truly special memories should be able to remember all kinds of information, not just what interests them.

Dr. James hopes that his study will provide answers for both those who doubt and those who surprise at what Williams and AJ. are able to do. “The human brain is the most important machinery in the known universe,” he said. “My aim is to decrease the mystery of this surprising machinery.”

    八、阅读回答问题(12)

(本题12)    The debate on “textbooks vs. computers” has been going on for years. How much technology is enough in the classroom? Should textbooks be replaced by computers?

There is no doubt that computers are powerful tools. Computer-based lesson plans are updated in real time. New information can be added as soon as changes take place. Students can find the latest information for the subjects they are studying.

With computers, students can learn how to use them for the rest of their lives. Today, computers are used in almost all areas. Students can prepare themselves better for the future if they have computers.

However, despite these advantages, I think textbooks must stay.

Textbooks are professionally edited. All the facts have been checked. They are put together in the best way. Each chapter builds on what a student has previously learned. On the internet, however, not all the information is true to organized.

With textbooks, it is easier for students to take notes. Scientists have found that taking notes by hand helps students learn more.

Textbooks are also less expensive than computers. While most families can afford textbooks, not all of them can afford a computer. Every student should be allowed to learn what he needs to learn. It's wrong to rob a student of his right to learn just because he can't afford the material.

Computers are playing an important role in education. They allow students to learn more. However, I don’t think they can replace textbooks. If students want to learn well, they must use textbooks. Do you agree with me?

57What is the main idea of the second paragraphs?

58Does the third paragraph suggest that computers are useful to students?

59How many advantages do textbooks have according to the passage?

60What advantage do textbooks have over computers according to paragraph 7?

61What’s the writer’s point of view in the last paragraph?

62Do you think computers should replace textbooks? Why or Why not?
