Scientists say they've develped a system using machine fr learning t predict when and where lightning will strike. The research was led by engineers frm the Écle Plytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Eurpean researchers have estimated that between 6,000 and 24,000 peple are killed by lightning wrldwide each year. The strikes can als cause pwer utages, destry prperty, damage electrical equipment and start frest fires. Fr these reasns, climate scientists have lng sught t develp methds t predict and cntrl lightning. In the United States and ther places, grundbased sensing devices are used t identify strikes as they happen. But, n system has been created t effectively predict lightning.
The system tested in the experiments used a cmbinatin f data frm weather statins and machine learning methds. The researchers develped a predictin mdel that was trained t recgnize weather cnditins that were likely t cause lightning.
The mdel was created with data cllected ver a 12year perid frm 12 Swiss weather statins in cities and muntain areas. The data related t fur main surface cnditins: air pressure, air temperature, relative humidity and wind speed.
The atmspheric data was placed int a machine learning algrithm (算法), which cmpared it t recrds f lightning strikes. Researchers say the algrithm was then able t learn the cnditins under which lightning happens.
Amirhssein Mstajabi is a PhD student at the institute wh led the develpment f the methd. He said,“Current systems fr gathering such data are slw and cmplex and require cstly cllectin equipment like radar r satellites.”
“Our methd uses data that can be btained frm any weather statin,” Mstajabi said.“This will imprve data cllectin in very remte areas nt cvered by radar and satellites r in places where cmmunicatin systems have been cut,” he added.
The researchers plan t keep develping the technlgy in partnership with a Eurpean effrt that aims t create a lightning prtectin system. The effrt is called the Eurpean Laser Lightning Rd Prject.
12.Why have climate scientists tried t predict and cntrl lightning?
A.T cllect relative data.
B.T reduce the destructin lightning has been causing.
C.T create a scientific system.
D.T d research in relatin t machine learning.
13.The fur mentined surface cnditins include all f the fllwing EXCEPT ________.
A.air pllutin B.wind speed
C.relative humidity D.air temperature
14.What des the underlined wrd “it” in Paragraph 5 refer t?
A.Lightning. B.The system being tested.
C.The atmspheric data. D.The machine learning algrithm.
15.What can we learn abut Mstajabi frm the passage?
A.He develped the methd and the system by himself.
B.He thinks the current systems are t slw and simple.
C.He is a prfessr at the Swiss Federal Institute f Technlgy.
D.He believes their system des much better in data cllectin.
