Culture Backgrund
The Channel Tunnel, als called the Eur Tunnel r Chunnel, actually cnsists f three tunnels. Tw f the tubes are full sized and accmmdate rail traffic. In between the tw train tunnels is a smaller service tunnel that serves as an emergency escape rute. There are als several "crss-ver" passages that allw trains t switch frm ne track t anther.

In 1860, a better plan was put frward by an Englishman, William Lw. He suggested that a duble railway-tunnel shuld be built. This wuld slve the prblem f ventilatin, fr if a train entered this tunnel, it wuld draw in fresh air behind it. Frty-tw years later a tunnel was actually begun. If, at the time, the British had nt feared invasin, it wuld have been cmpleted. The wrld had t wait almst anther 100 years fr the Channel Tunnel. It was fficially pened n March 7, 1994, finally cnnecting Britain t the Eurpean cntinent.
In 1858, a French engineer, Aime Thme de Gamnd, arrived in England with a plan fr a twenty-ne-mile tunnel under the English Channel. He said that it wuld be pssible t build a platfrm in the centre f the Channel. This platfrm wuld serve as a prt and a railway statin. The tunnel wuld be well-ventilated if tall chimneys were built abve sea level.
