Traveling to a foreign country can make you frightened if you don't know the local language. Mr.Thibault has a number of tips to help travelers manage in a destination when they don't speak the native tongue, based on his own experience. Here are a few of them.
Download a Language Translation App
Mr.Thibault tends to rely on Google Translate and suggests that travelers find an app that works for them. Ideally, find one that specializes in the language you need to translate especially if the language uses a character set you’re not familiar with, or have difficulty pronouncing.
Speak with Your Hands and Head
Pointing with your hands and nodding or shaking your head, Mr.Thibault said, are easy ways to communicate with locals in the country you’re in. “Gestures are all universally understood,” he said.
Learn a Few Key Words
Knowing basic words and phrases like “hello” “thank you” and “I’m sorry, I don’t speak your language. Do you speak English?” is a must, Mr. Thibault said. Showing that you care enough to learn some of the language before you go, and at least enough to acknowledge that you don’t know more, is a form of respect and will make you go a long way to be liked by locals.
Work with a Local Travel Agent
If you feel particularly uncomfortable in the country you’re heading to, and you have to go anyway, relying on a local travel agent who knows both your and your destination's languages can be incredibly useful.
Hire a Local Tour Guide
A tour guide can help you get a better grasp of the local language and is a good person to practice words and phrases with. Whenever Mr. Thibault visits a new country, he books a sightseeing tour with a guide on the first day of his trip. “I use this day to learn about my destination and get familiar with the language,” he said.
1. In what situation should a language translation app be applied while traveling abroad?
A. When you have trouble pronouncing the words.
B. When you want to acknowledge your ignorance.
C. When you want to practice the local language.
D. When you feel uncomfortable in the country.
2. What is the easiest way to communicate with foreigners according to the text?
A. Downloading a language translation app.
B. Learning a few key words.
C. Using body language.
D. Working with a guide.
3. How can you better understand the local language?
A. By speaking with your hands and head.
B. By learning a few key words.
C. By downloading a language translation app.
D. By hiring a local tour guide.

A rare wild flower is being re-established in Devon fields thanks to some four-legged helpers. A conservation charity called Plantlife has employed donkeys as “ecosystem engineers” to encourage the return of the endangered small-flowered catchfly.
The catchfly was once found all across Britain but now it only grows in small areas of Wales and the south and west of England. Experts blame its decline on modern farming practices. The flower flourished around the edges of sandy fields where farmers grew their crops, but because of weedkillers that were used to remove “unwanted” plants, and fertilisers to boost crop yields, its habitat has largely disappeared.
Plantlife teamed up with the Donkey Sanctuary, a charity that looks after donkeys in the UK and around the world. It owns several farms across Devon and the UK, where it takes care of hundreds of rescued donkeys, as well as maintaining habitats for other wildlife. More than 20, 000 seeds have been scattered on fields at the sanctuary's main Devon farm, and it is hoped that many will grow into plants this summer. They will provide food for threatened bird species such as linnets, yellowhammers and skylarks. Plantlife then aims to get the donkeys themselves involved, testing whether catchfly seeds benefit from being trampled into the ground as the donkeys take their exercise. Many plants have seeds that must be pressed into the soil in order to germinate.
“We're incredibly grateful to partners like the Donkey Sanctuary who are helping these fantastically rare wild flowers come back from the edge of extinction,” Cath Shellswell of Plantlife told The Guardian newspaper. “We look forward to seeing small-flowered catchfly return and we are working with the sanctuary to ensure that this tiny plant has a thriving future.”
4. Why are donkeys employed in Devon fields?
A. To work in the fields. B. To restore the catchfly.
C. To avoid extinction. D. To raise crop yields.
5. What caused the decline of the catchfly's population?
A. Soil loss. B. Water pollution.
C. Climate change. D. Modern agriculture.
6. How do donkeys help the catchfly come back?
A. By pressing its seeds into the soil. B. By working the land.
C. By providing nutrition for it. D. By spreading its seeds.
7. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Donkeys help fields flower again. B. Farmland becomes a natural habitat.
C. The biodiversity forms on Devon farms. D. The catchfly has a thriving future.

In choosing a friend, one should be very careful. A good friend can help you study. You can have fun together and make each other happy. Sometimes you will meet fairweather friends. They will be with you as long as you have money or luck, but when you are down, they will run away. How do I know when I have found a good friend? I look for certain qualities of character, especially understanding, honesty and reliability(可靠).
Above all else, I look for understanding in a friend. A good friend tries to understand how another person is feeling. He is not quick to judge. Instead, he tries to learn from others. He puts himself in the other person’s place, and he tries to think of ways to be helpful. He is also a good listener.
At the same time, however, a good friend is honest. He does not look for faults in others. He notices their good points. In short, a friend will try to understand me and accept me.
Another quality of a friend is reliability. I can always depend on a good friend. If he tells me he will meet me somewhere at a certain time, I can be sure that he will be there. If I need a favor, he will do his best to help me. If I am in trouble, he will not run away from me.
There is a fourth quality that makes a friend special. A special friend is someone with whom we can have fun. We should enjoy our lives, and we would enjoy our friendship. That is why I especially like friends who are fun to be with. A good friend likes the same things I like. We share experience and learn from each other. A good friend has a good sense of humor too. He likes to laugh with me. That is how we share in the joy of being friends. And I know that he is looking for the same quality in me.
When I meet someone who is reliable, honest, and understanding, I know I’ve found a friend!

Learning Chinese could be one of the most important decisions you have ever made. Chinese is becoming the language to learn in the 21st century. With the world’s largest population and the rapidly growing middle class, China stands to become the engine(火车头) of the world’s economy in the coming years. This will make learning Chinese very important for people in many industries, or for those who wish to visit China or learn from its culture and history.
There is an ongoing effort to modernize the writing system and standardize the language. An increasing number of people learning Chinese are learning Mandarin, so unless you absolutely need to learn another dialect (such as Cantonese), be sure you are studying Mandarin.
For native English speakers, Chinese is one of the most difficult and most different languages to learn. The vocabulary is wholly unfamiliar and unlike anything we know. In addition, in the Chinese tone system, words are spoken in rising or falling tones, which help to distinguish them. Furthermore, there is the Chinese writing system — a collection of thousands of individual ideograms(表意文字),or symbols, which represent a word or an idea. These ideograms have no phonetic (语音的) value — that is to say, we can’t tell how the word is pronounced by how it is written. There is a method of presenting written Chinese in a phonetic script called pinyin. If you are learning Chinese, you’ll be working with this pinyin system, but the beauty of the traditional writing system shouldn’t be passed up. All these factors make learning Chinese difficult for us. Yet, for a determined learner, there’s always a way to overcome the difficulties.
12. Why is learning Chinese becoming more and more important?
A. Chinese engines are very welcome.
B. China has the world’s largest population.
C. There are more and more rich people in China.
D. China is becoming more and more important to the world’s economy.
13. What can we learn from the text?
A. The author thinks Chinese is as difficult as English.
B. The author is interested in the Chinese language and its culture.
C. Foreign languages can play a great role in industrial development.
D. As long as the pinyin system is learned well, one can learn Chinese well.
14. What’s the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The difficulties of learning Chinese.
B. The advantages of learning Chinese.
C. The Chinese tone system.
D. The Chinese writing system.
15. What would be probably written following this text?
A. The sources of Chinese characters.
B. The importance of learning Chinese.
C. The advice on how to learn Chinese.
D. The difficulties of learning other languages.

故填their。
be different from“与……不同”为固定短语。故填from。
故填when。
be unwilling to do sth.“不愿做某事”,故填to leave。
look forward to“期待……”

注意:1. 词数80左右;
2. 可以适当增加细节,以使行文连贯;
First of all, thank you for listening to my speech.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Thanks again for your attention!
First of all, thank you for listening to my speech. My topic is: we can’t live without music.
Music is like the air we need to maintain our normal lives around us. You can’t imagine how terrible a world without music would be. Movies and TV shows only have dry conversations and scenes; mobile phones only vibrations; streets only noisy crowds; restaurants only depressed meals. What a terrible world it is!
As a student, I hope we all can enjoy the fun brought by music in our spare time. Instead of just listening to music, we can even make our own music. Let’s enjoy the fun of music!
Thanks again for your attention!

“A usual boring day!” This would be the answer from Roman if somebody asked him how his day was. These days he found everything boring, and nothing excited him.
One day he was lying on the bed in his room as usual. Suddenly the light went off. His room was rather hot without an air conditioner. Though he did not want to leave his room, he had to. Unwillingly, he left his room and came to the living room. It was slightly cool there as the living room had two huge windows.
His young brother was playing with his friend. They were rolling on the floor. He was looking out for the TV remote, but couldn’t find it. He got up and searched for it everywhere, but the remote was nowhere to be seen. He looked at his brother who was still lying on the floor, playing.
He asked him, “where is the remote?”
“Under the sofa,” his brother yelled.
He tried to look through the remote, but it was dark. He put his hand under the sofa. He touched something, grabbed it and took his hand out. It was a snake in his hand!
Upon seeing that, his brother started to yell, “Snake! Snake!” Mom came as soon as she heard the shouting. She was too horrified to see a snake. She was so scared that she even couldn’t speak a word. Two kids were trying to hide behind each other’s back. “What an old trick!” Roman thought and threw it to the kids.
As the snake landed on the floor and neared the kids, it started moving from the left side to the right. Only then did Roman realize that the snake was real, and not a toy. He threw the snake to kids because he thought it was a fake snake and it was the kids who were playing some tricks.
This time Mom almost got a heart attack. Now Roman was scared, too. The snake was only 10 meters away from the kids and was staring at them. They even couldn’t call the rescue team. There might be some deadly damage before their arrival. There was not much time to think. It was the time for a quick action.
Paragraph 1:
As Roman was farther from the snake, he jumped onto the window and grabbed the curtains.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
After the rescue team caught and took the snake away, everyone went inside the home.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
As Roman was farther from the snake, he jumped to the window and grabbed the curtain. He pulled it so hard that the curtain ended up landing in his hand. Then without waiting a second, he threw the curtain over the snake. When the snake came under the curtain, he grabbed the kids’ hands and brought them out of the room. He again went inside and took his mother to the front yard. Mom was shaking like a leaf and the kids were sweating hard. Later, he called the rescue team from his cell phone.
After the rescue team caught and took away the snake, everyone went inside the home. Roman went back to his room and tried to sleep, but couldn’t, so he went to the living room where he found his brother was watching cartoons. He sat next to his brother and his cell phone beeped. It was another text from his friend asking how his day was. Roman slowly typed: “Jaw-breaking day”. Then he kept his mobile aside and dragged his brother’s head to his chest and started to play with his hair gently. Then he whispered something in his ear that sounded something like “Sorry”.
①.拉扯:pull/drag
②.覆盖:cover/overlap
③.引领:take/lead
①.害怕的:scared/frightened
②.愧疚的:guilty/sorry
