    Painter (船头缆索)水手们成年累月的漂泊海上,走南闯北,他们的语言因此格外生动,丰富多彩。但也有人开玩笑说。这是因为水手们的船头就拴着“画家”(painter)的缘故。的确,painter 最常用的含义是“画家”。然而对于水手而言,则更多的指小船的船头缆索。它来源于拉丁文pendere(系,挂)。在法语中变成peyntur, 表示系锚的缆绳;而被英语吸收后变成painter.二次世界大战以后,在报刊上经常可以见到cut the painter 这个短语。表示殖民地与宗主国脱离关系而独立,正所谓“隔断缆绳自漂流”啊。此外,在美国口语当中,该词还有一个特殊的含义,那就是“狮子”
