(2022·山东济宁)As we all know, too much trash is a big problem for our environment. A woman in Indonesia’s Java island has come up with a great idea—lending books to children in exchange for trash.
Raden Roro Hendarti, nearly 50 years old, is a librarian in Muntang village. She started a “trash library”, hoping to make children read more as well as make them realize the importance of environment protection. Each weekday, Raden puts all kinds of books on the back of her three-wheeler (三轮车) and rides to Muntang village. There, children line up to exchange plastic cups, bags and other trash for books from Raden’s mobile library. After finishing the exchange, Raden carries back all the trash.
In the library where Raden works, there are thousands of books. Every time she shows up, children run to her “trash library”. They all carry trash bags, and Raden’s three-wheeler quickly fills with trash as the books fly out. Raden collects about 100kg of trash each week. It is then sorted out (分类) and sent for recycling or sale. She is happy that children spend less time on online games because of the books.
Raden plans to take the mobile library service to neighboring areas as well. She says, “We all should take care of our trash in order to fight climate (气候) change and save the earth.”
8.What does the underlined word “trash” mean?
    A.plastic B.rubbish C.paper D.information
9.Which of the following shows how Raden’s idea works?
    ①She rides to Muntang village.
②She carries back all the trash.
③Children line up to get books for their trash.
④She puts books on her three-wheeler.
    A. B. C. D.
10.How much trash can Raden collect each weekday?
    A.About 100 kg. B.About 50 kg. C.About 25 kg. D.About 20 kg.
11.What’s Raden going to do next?
A.To ask her neighbors for help.
B.To give the mobile library to her neighbors.
C.To exchange books for trash in more villages.
D.To tell children to spend less time on online games.
(2022·山东济宁)When you first meet Meggie, you may think she’s strange. She often tells people which word “tastes” good and who has a “delicious” name. But she’s not crazy. She has synesthesia (伴生感觉), something only one in 2,000 people has.
People who have synesthesia experience the world differently. For some people, different words “taste” differently, for some, numbers or letters have colors, and for some, music “touches” parts of their bodies. Many of them experience more than one kind of synesthesia, while some have just one, like Meggie.
Each of them has their own experience- two people with synesthesia may both “feel” music, but they almost never feel the music in the same way. For example, one may feel the music of the violin lightly brushing his face; the other may feel it on her ankle (脚踝). And one’s experience of synesthesia is always the same. If they see the number 5 in the color blue, then 5 is blue every time they see it.
There’s one thing about synesthesia: it can’t be “turned off”. If you have synesthesia, you’ll experience it all the time. Meggie once met a guy and his name made her think of the taste of bad eggs. He was a fun guy, but after thinking about his name all night, she felt too sick to be friends with him. Even so, she still likes this “gift” because that’s what makes her different.
12.What do you learn about Meggie from the first paragraph?
A.She has a strange name. B.She is a good person.
C.She is a crazy person. D.She is special in a way.
13.What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us?
A.People with synesthesia experience the world differently.
B.For some people with synesthesia, different words “taste” differently.
C.For some people with synesthesia, numbers or letters have colors.
D.Many people with synesthesia experience more than one kind of it.
14.What did Meggie stop being friends with the guy?
A.He often played jokes on her. B.He enjoys eating bad eggs.
C.She couldn’t stand his name. D.She did not like his gift.
15.Which of the following might be said by Meggie?
A.“The sound of drums touches my back.”
B.“The number zero tastes like an apple.”
C.“The name Shakespeare is in bright purple.”
D.“The music of the violin lightly brushes my face.”

    (2021·山东济宁)CAN YOU COOK?
This teenager can-and his mom’s very happy with him.
Tom is like any other teenager. He goes to school, does his homework, meets his friends and enjoys doing sports.
But between 5:30 and 6:30 from Monday to Friday, Tom does something different. He cooks dinner for all the family: mom, dad. younger brother Joe and older sister Emma.
    Tom’s mom
I think it’s important for teenagers to learn how to cook. Maths and English are important, of course, but they need other skills too to help them in today’s world.
First I taught Tom how to cook easy meals like pizza or egg and chips. Then he started using recipes in my cookery(烹饪) books. Yesterday he made vegetable soup. It was very good!
I love cooking and I think I’m really good at it. None of my friends cook. I don’t know why. It isn’t difficult and it’s great fun!

    Tom
In the past, Tom didn’t help out at home and his mom wasn’t very happy with him. Today, things are different and she is very happy.

    19. Why is Tom’s mom so happy with him? ________
    A. He cooks for the family. B.He has a lot of friends.
C.He goes to school on time. D.He is good at doing sports.
20.How many people are there in Tom’s family? ________
    A.3. B.4. C.5. D.6.
21.How did Tom learn to make vegetable soup? ________
A.From his mother. B.From his father.
    C.From him friends. D.From a cookery book.
22.Which of the following would Tom’s mom most probably agree with? ________
A.Children should not help out at home.
B.Cooking is the most important skill for kids.
C.Cooking is just as important as maths and English.
D.Maths and English are more important than cooking.
(2021·山东济宁)There are many fights in this thick book that you would see in a good action movie. In fact, the book has been made into a movie, but I’m just not interested. How would I enjoy the movie when the book didn’t touch my heart at all?
I don’t mind reading about bad guys in a story. In fact, I don’t enjoy a book that has only good people who never do anything wrong, because it’s just not real life. But Lyle Heaton goes too far this time. I’ve read Heaton’s other books, and he is very good at writing about bad guys, but what is he trying to tell us by letting the bad guys in this book win everything in the end?
Besides, you always have to guess who the “I” in the book is. Heaton changes it so often that sometimes you just don’t know who is speaking.
You might feel a lot of things when you read Purple Star, but believe me, joy wouldn’t be one of them.
    (Alex)

    A.Alex’s own guess.
    B.Someone who is speaking.
    C.Another problem of the book.
D.The changes of the “I” in the book.
    26.What is Alex’s suggestion to readers? ________
    A.Better not read the book.
B.Try to guess who the “I” is.
C.Read the book as soon as possible.

(2021·山东济宁)Probably nothing can compare with a parent’s will to protect her child. Let’s see how these animals find ways to protect their children.

Sperm whales are emperors of the ocean. They are also the world’s biggest babysitters. The mother supports her 2 baby near the surface in order to help it to breathe until it is strong enough to swim on its own. While they are diving for food, however, their young may be unable to follow their parents.
This causes a big childcare problem. The solution? A babysitter.
Older whales have an active role. They may be aunts or grandmothers(who can live to 100 or more years old) and they may even be members of other families. They patiently take care of the young whales just under the surface of the water, waiting for the feeding mothers to return.

Elephants give new meaning to the phrase: takes a village to raise a child. “The baby has a huge group of mothers. These mothers take turns to watch over each other’s children.” They are called “allmothers”, helping the new born survive(生存) by helping its mother. With their help, the mother can get enough food and provide milk for her child. After carrying a nearly 300 pound baby for 22 months, you’d probably need some rest, too!

How far would you go to protect your child? Would you starve (饿死) yourself to help it survive?
Female Octopuses do. An octopus lays between 50, 000 and 200, 000 eggs each time. Then, she separates the eggs into groups based on their size, shape and possibility of survival. She then spends the next two months of her life protecting them. She is so busy keeping them alive. She doesn’t even have time to feed herself-so she often ends up dying shortly after her eggs hatch (孵化).

27.Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word “solution”? A.Question.
    B.Answer.
    C.Parent.
    D.Ocean.
28.In what way is the elephant’s way of childcare similar to the sperm whale’s? ________
A.The mother spends 22 months taking care of her baby.
B.Others in the community help the mother take care of her babies.
C.The mother tries to get enough food and provide milk for her child.
D.Older members of the family help the mother take care of her babies.
29.Choose the correct order in which a mother octopus cares for her babies. ________
    ①She lays her eggs.
    ②Her eggs hatch.
    ③She dies of hunger.

Group: Buffy, Debby, Jamie, Albert, Matt …(7)
Hey, guys! I have a lot of things I don't need, so I'm thinking about having a yard sale. What do you think?

    Thank you!

Having a yard sale is not easy. You have to collect things, put prices on them, put them out on tables and then wait for people to come. And usually you have to sell things at VERY low prices. For all that time and work, you make very little money. Why not just sell your things online for higher prices?

Debby's right. But I think it'd be even better to just give your things to people who need them. I just sent out a lot of things last week.
Hey, I love yard sales! It's a great chance to make big money if you choose the right day. In my experience, Saturday is the best.

I agree with Albert. You can make money and meet interesting people. I made some good friends at my last yard sale.

    34. Why does Buffy start the chatting (聊天)?________
A.To ask her friends for advice.
B.To sell things to the group members.
C.To invite her friends to go to a yard sale.
D.To explain how to deal with useless things.
    35.What is Debby's opinion?________
A.A yard sale could make much more money.
B.You have to wait long for people to come.
C.A yard sale is not worth the time and work.
D.Online selling takes too much time and work.
36.Which of the following best describes Jamie?________
    A.Honest.
    B.Clever.
    C.Hard-working.
    D.Kind-hearted.
    37.Who support(s) Buffy's idea?________
    A.Debby and Jamie. B.Only Albert.
    C.Only Matt. D.Albert and Matt.

"Keep your eyes on your own paper" is one of the rules that Mrs. Archer has taught us. It is a simple rule, but it's not a rule everybody chooses to follow.
This morning, I had an experience with a "rule breaker" during an English exam. I felt somebody was watching me a little too closely. I turned my head quickly and saw James, who sat right behind me. My eyes caught his and he said in a low voice. "I hope you studied for this test!" I gave him a smile, not sure whether he was joking or not, and returned to my test. This time I leaned(倾身)a little more closely towards my paper. "I can't see!" James said.
"What am I going to do?" I thought to myself. Cheating(欺骗)went against my beliefs. I curled my arm around my answers.
"He's your friend, and what are friends for?"
    "You know it's wrong."
I tapped(轻敲,轻拍)the top of my desk, hoping for an easy way out of this matter. No easy answer came. I just knew I had to do what I felt was right, even if it made James mad. So I guarded my paper so that he couldn't see my answers.
When the exam ended, I stood there for a moment, searching for the right words to say to James. "Sorry, James, but you know me well enough to understand how I feel about cheating," I said slowly and softly. "But maybe I could help you study before the next test." "OK, Brian," he smiled. "It might not be easy, but I'll give it a try."
I felt happy that my friendship with James hadn't been destroyed(破坏). Mrs. Archer would be proud.

    C.②③⑤
    D.③④⑤

    A.Brian, silently in his mind.
    B.James, in a low voice.
    C.Mrs. Archer, slowly and softly.
D.Brian and James, to each other.

B.Because both he and James did very well in the exam.
C.Because he didn't let James copy his answers in the exam.
D.Because he followed the rule and kept friendship with James.
(2020·山东济宁)When spring is in the air, everyone looks forward to seeing the beautiful and eye-pleasing flowers and plants. The following flowers and plants might not be so eye-pleasing, but are certainly eye-catching!
    Lady's Slipper
This flower is amazing. It looks like a shoe. To be more exact, it is like a lady's slipper. That's how it gets its name. Although it was once found across Europe and the UK, now Lancashire in England is the only place where this plant can be found. The flower was so unusual that people picked almost all of them. Besides, it is one of the most difficult plants to grow. Fortunately, strict rules have been made to protect this endangered plant.
    Hot Lips
When you see a plant like this, don't get shocked! No, they are not a woman's lips (唇)! You can find these plants in countries with tropical (热带的) rain forests, such as Colombia, Costa Rica and Panama. Because of the cutting down of trees, these unusual plants have become endangered.
    Black Bat Flower
The black bat flower is an unusual flower that grows in the wild and tropical forests of Yunnan Province in China. It is famous for its bat﹣shaped black flowers. It needs special environmental conditions to grow. This is the reason why it is an endangered plant.

On the evening of September 26, 2019, the streets of Geneva in Switzerland went dark. This usually happens when there is a problem with the electricity, but this time the lights were turned off to allow people to go outside and look at the stars. This is often impossible in a city because of light population.
Light pollution is when light from streetlights or buildings makes the night less dark. There are many reasons why this is a problem. Animals sleep less because they think it is still daytime. Birds that fly to warmer countries in the autumn need to see the moon and stars to find their way, but light pollution makes this difficult. Insects and birds in cities often fly towards lights at night, knock into buildings and die.
Light pollution is also bad for us. It can stop us sleeping and give up headaches. Also, we don’t see the same sky that people in the past did. This means we almost never see one of the greatest scenes in the world: the millions of stars. Hundreds of thousands of people have never seen it in their lives.
However, it is not difficult to do a few things to reduce (减轻) light pollution: we can all turn lights off when we don’t need them and we can cover our windows. If there is less light pollution, we will once again be able to enjoy the beauty of the night sky.

(2020·山东济宁)I had two pets in my house, a dog named Sam and a cat named Katty. They loved each other so much that they were always together. When I played with one, the other joined in. If Sam barked at something, Katty ran to see what it was. When I took either one out of the house, the other was always waiting by the door when we returned. That was the way it was for years.
But one day, without any warning, Sam died of a heart attack (心脏病突发) at the animal hospital and I had to walk back to our house alone. This time, there was no Sam for Katty to greet and no way for me to explain why she would never see her friend again.
In the days that followed, Katty seemed heartbroken. She could not tell me in words how she felt, but I could see the pain and disappointment in her eyes whenever anyone opened the front door and the hope whenever she heard a dog bark.
As the weeks went by, the cat seemed to feel much better. One day as I walked into our living room, I happened to have a look at the floor next to our sofa where we had a statue (塑像) of Sam that we had bought a few years before. Lying next to it, one arm around the statue's neck, was Katty, happily sleeping with her best friend.
