Califrnia has lst half its big trees since the 1930s, accrding t a study t be published Tuesday and climate change seems t be a majr factr (因素).
The number f trees larger than tw feet acrss has declined by 50 percent n mre than 46,000 square miles f Califrnia frests, the new study finds. N area was spared r unaffected, frm the fggy nrthern cast t the Sierra Nevada Muntains t the San Gabriels abve Ls Angeles. In the Sierra high cuntry, the number f big trees has fallen by mre than 55 percent; in parts f suthern Califrnia the decline was nearly 75 percent.
Many factrs cntributed t the decline, said Patrick McIntyre, an eclgist wh was the lead authr f the study. Wdcutters targeted big trees. Husing develpment pushed int the wds. Aggressive wildfire cntrl has left Califrnia frests crwded with small trees that cmpete with big trees fr resurces (资源).
But in cmparing a study f Califrnia frests dne in the 1920s and 1930s with anther ne between 2001 and 2010, McIntyre and his clleagues dcumented a widespread death f big trees that was evident even in wildlands prtected frm wdcutting r develpment.
The lss f big trees was greatest in areas where trees had suffered the greatest water shrtage. The researchers figured ut water stress with a cmputer mdel that calculated hw much water trees were getting in cmparisn with hw much they needed, taking int accunt such things as rainfall, air temperature, dampness f sil, and the timing f snwmelt (融雪).
Since the 1930s, McIntyre said, the biggest factrs driving up water stress in the state have been rising temperatures, which cause trees t lse mre water t the air, and earlier snwmelt, which reduces the water supply available t trees during the dry seasn.

Living and dealing with kids can be a tugh jb these days, but living and dealing with parents can be even tugher.
If I have learned anything in my 16 years, it is that cmmunicatin is very imprtant, bth when yu disagree and when yu get alng. With any relatinship, yu need t let ther persn knw hw yu are feeling. If yu are nt able t cmmunicate, yu drift_apart. When yu are mad at yur parents, r anyne else, nt talking t them desn't slve anything.
Cmmunicatin begins with the cncerns (关心) f anther. It means that yu can't just cme hme frm schl, g up t yur rm and take n ntice t anyne. Even if yu just say “Hi”, and see hw their day was fr five minutes, it is better than nthing.
If yu lked up the wrd “cmmunicatin” in a dictinary, it wuld say “the exchange f ideas, the cnveyance (表达) f infrmatin, crrespndence (通信), means f cmmunicatin: a letter r a message”. T keep a gd relatinship, yu must keep cmmunicatin strng. Let peple knw hw yu feel, even if it's just by writing a nte.
When dealing with parents, yu always have t make them feel gd abut hw they are ding as a parent. If yu are trying t make them see smething as yu see it, tell them that yu'll listen t what they have t say, and ask them plitely t listen t yu. Shuting r walking away nly makes the situatin wrse.
Here is an example: ne night, Sphie went t a street party with her friends. She knew she had t be hme by midnight after the firewrks, but she didn't feel she culd just ask t g hme. That wuld be rude. After all, they had been nice enugh t take her alng with them. Needless t say, she was late getting hme. Her parents were mad at first, but when Sphie explained why she was late, they weren't as mad and let it g. Cmmunicatin is the key here. If Sphie's parents had nt been willing t listen, Sphie wuld have been in a lt f truble.
Cmmunicatin isn't a neway matter: it ges bth ways. Just remember: if yu get int a situatin like Sphie's, tell the ther persn hw yu feel—listening is the key t cmmunicatin.
32.In the writer's view, dealing with parents is ________ than with children.
A.mre difficult B.much easier
C.less interesting D.mre interesting
33.The underlined phrase“ drift apart” in Paragraph 2 means ________.
A.keep up with thers B.mve alng smthly
C.distance yurself frm thers D.cme clser t each ther
34.The example in Paragraph 6 shws that ________.
A.Sphie is very plite t her parents
B.Sphie's parents are willing t listen t her
C.Sphie did well in explaining her being late
D.cmmunicatin is the slutin t misunderstanding
35.All the fllwing statements are crrect except “________”.
A.Cmmunicatin is a twway matter
B.It is better t say “Hi” t thers than say nthing
C.If yu dn't agree with thers, yu'd better let them knw
D.If yu are nt able t cmmunicate, walk away.

In schl and at hme, mst f us have been sclded r even gt punished fr daydreaming. The majrity f peple say that by daydreaming we waste ur time and energy n smething that is nthing less than unprductive things. But many medical studies have stressed the fact that daydreaming wrks wnders n ur imaginatin, creativity and situatin handling techniques. In fact, many prblems can be easily slved when we daydream.
The greatest benefit f daydreaming is that yur md gets imprved. By separating yurself frm the wrld arund yu, yu tend t enjy the peace in yur mind and get relaxed by daydreaming, as yu think abut smething that calms yur sense. When yu start visualizing (设想) things while daydreaming, yu need t frget all stress and tensin (紧张). Then yu get happiness frm it and this happiness changes int a surce f energy that keeps yu in a gd md t wrk.
Many psychlgists have said that peple wh daydream tend t have a sharper memry. It's true that when yu are daydreaming, yu tend t get carried away imagining varius situatins, either real r unreal. Yu tend t act differently in different situatins, trying t satisfy yur mind by ding what yu want in yur dreams. When yur mind gets satisfied, yu are in a better psitin t cncentrate mre n yur wrk. Since daydreaming activates the nerves f yur brain, yu tend t have better attentiveness and yur ability t remember things develps.
When yu daydream, yu autmatically visualize yurself listening t yur heart and therefre, yu get t knw yurself better. Yu als start realizing the mistakes yu've made in life and yu start trying yur best t avid repeating them. Such visualizatin techniques help yu cnnect yurself with yur sul.
