    Daisy: Hi, Maria. How was Paul’s party?Maria: Oh, Daisy, it was terrible. Daisy: It was? Maria: Uh-huh. Daisy: What happened? Maria: Well, I was supposed to arrive at 7: 00, but I arrived at 8: 00. Daisy: Oh, so you were late. Maria: Yeah, but in my country, it’s different. When you’re invited for 7: 00, you’re expected to come later! It’s considered strange to turn up on time.
    Daisy: I see. Maria: Then when I met Paul’s mom, I kissed her. Daisy: Oh ... you were supposed to shake hands instead. Maria: That’s right. And I wore a fancy dress. Daisy: What’s wrong with that? Maria: Well, it turned out that it was an outdoor party, Daisy. Everyone else was in a T-shirt and jeans. Daisy: I guess next time you should ask what you’re supposed to wear.

    John: I didn’t know that. So I just stood there with my hand out. Finally, I returned the bow. Katie: I remember when I first met Marie last year, I did the same thing. I held out my hand and to my surprise, she kissed me on both sides of my face! John: I wouldn’t mind that!Katie: Very funny. Later I found out French people are supposed to kiss when they see each other.

    mistake n. 错误 / v. 误解; 误会,其过去式为mistook,过去分词为mistaken。其常用短语有:make a mistake 犯错误by mistake 错误地mistake ... for ... 把 ...... 错当成 ......
    e. g. Please be careful, or you will make mistakes in your homework. 请细心点,否则你将在作业中出错。 I’m sorry I took your English book by mistake. 很抱歉我错拿了你的英语书。 Our teacher mistook me for my twin sister. 我们老师把我误认为我的双胞胎姐姐了。
    I met a Japanese boy called Sato, and as soon as I held out my hand, he bowed. (教材P74)
    as soon as常用来引导时间状语从句, 强调两个动作几乎同时发生。e. g. I fell in love with the house as soon as I saw it. 我一看见这座房子就喜欢上了它。 I will come over to your house as soon as I have free time tomorrow. 明天我一有空就到你家来。
    特别提醒:as soon as引导时间状语从句时,若主句用一般将来时,从句则用一般现在时。若主句为祈使句或含有情态词,从句也要用一般现在时。
    e.g. The job gave me a lot of valuable experience. 这份工作我许多宝贵的经给了验。 The book is very valuable to me. 这本书对我来说很有价值。 This book is well worth reading. 这本书很值得读。
    *valuable作表语时可与介词to构成短语be valuable to sb.,意 思是“对某人来说有价值”。
    I held out my hand and to my surprise, she kissed me on both sides of my face!(教材P74)
    to one’s surprise 令某人惊讶的是e. g. To my surprise, he has made so much progress. 令我惊讶的是, 他取得了如此大的进步。 The little girl asked her mother in surprise. 小女孩惊讶地问她妈妈。
    【拓展】 surprise还可作动词, 意为“使惊讶”, surprise sb.使某人讶surprise的词形变化:

    e. g. Both of them were surprised at the news. 他们俩都对这个消息感到惊讶。 The result was surprising. 结果令人惊讶。
    both det. & pron. 两个都e. g. Both answers are right. = Both of the answers are right. 两个答案都对。 They both showed great interest in Chinese culture. 他们俩都对中国文化表现出极大的兴趣。
    注意:含有both的句子变否定句时一般不借助not,常把both 变为neither。
    辨析: both, all, neither和none
    e. g. All of us are interested in history. 我们都对历史感兴趣。 Neither of the twins has / have been to Beijing. 这对双胞胎都没有去过北京。 None of the people has / have known the news. 没有人知道这个消息。

    find out 查明,弄清(情况)
    find out后可接由that, what, when 或how等引导的宾语从句, 也可接名词。e. g. Please find out when the meeting starts. 请查清楚会议什么时候开始。
    辨析: find out, look for与find
    e. g. Finally, I found out the truth. 最终,我查明了真相。 What are you looking for? 你在找什么? Did you find the lost child? 你们找到那个丢失的孩子了吗?
