He interviewed and took photos of fifty over-sixty-five-year-olds all over the world. His project explores various sides of their lives.
根据—Federico Mayor Zaragoza, Spain部分“Federico Mayor Zaragoza received a doctorate in Pharmacy (药学) from the Complutense University of Madrid in 1958. After many years spent in politics (政治), he became Director-General of UNESCO in 1987. In 1999, he created the Foundation for a Culture of Peace, of which he is now the president. In addition to many scientific publications,he has published (出版,发表) four collections of poems.
根据—Nadine Gordimer, South Africa部分“She read widely and began writing at an early age. She published her first short story at the age of fifteen, and has completed a large number of works, which have been translated into forty languages. 所以采访中的“My education has been the library and books (我的教育已经在图书馆和书籍中。)”
    B
In Japan, more than 25% of the population is over 65, a figure set to rise to 40 percent by 2050.
That means authorities need to think about ways to keep healthy and active for longer but also about how to cope with labor shortages.
At Cross Heart, more than half of the 119 caregivers are over 60, and 15 of them are over 70. The foundation that runs this nursing home and others in Kanagaw a Prefecture has raised the official retirement age to 70 but allows employees to keep working until 80 if they want to and can.
Although older workers have constraints—some can’t do the heavier tasks—they also offer advantages over younger workers who want time off for their children, said nursing home director Kaori Yokoo.
“Plus, because they’re close in age, they can relate to each other more, ” she said. For the older workers, the money is a nice benefit, but the main motivation is the activity and sense of community.
Hiroko Akiyama, at the University of Tokyo’s Institute of Gerontology, said a Japanese 65-year-old is in much better physical and mental shape than a 65-year-old a few decades ago. “They are full of energy, and healthy and long-liv ing,” she said. Her research has found that working helps keep seniors that way.
Meanwhile, researchers are working on robots that can lift the elderly out of beds and wheelchairs.
Still, Japan can’t rely only on seniors or, potentially, robots to staff its nursing homes, where the need will only grow as the population ages, analysts say.
Japan has agreements with Indonesia, Vietn am and the Philipp ines under which applicants who complete job training and pass a Japanese language test can work at a Japanese nursing home. But many Japanese also express deep concern about cultural differences.
    4. From the text we can learn that in Japan ______.
    A. money w ill be spent increasing the skills of the workforce
    B. young people are willing to care for children but not seniors
    C. aging caregivers will increasingly become a usual trend
    D. high-level nursing homes are in great need
    5. What does the underlined word “constraints” in Paragraph 4 mean?
    A. failures. B. benefits.
    C. experiences. D. drawbacks.
    6. What is the main reason for the old to work for nursing homes?
    A. To meet their physical and mental needs. B. To earn some money for their families.
    C. To show love and respect for seniors. D. To reduce the young’s burden.
    7. How many aspects does the writer mention to increase the workforce?
    A. 2. B. 3. C. 4. D. 5.
C 5. D 6. A 7. B
根据文章第三段“At Cross Heart, more than half of the 119 caregivers are over 60, and 15 of them are over 70. The foundation that runs this nursing home and others in Kanagaw a Prefecture has raised the official retirement age to 70 but allows employees to keep working until 80 if they want to and can.(在Cross Heart,119名护理人员中有一半以上超过60岁,其中15人超过70岁。
根据文章第四段划线词后句“some can’t do the heavier tasks—they also offer advantages over younger workers who want time off for their children,(有些人无法承担更重的任务——但与想要请假照顾孩子的年轻员工相比,年长员工也有优势。)”
根据文章第六段“Hiroko Akiyama, at the University of Tokyo’s Institute of Gerontology, said a Japanese 65-year-old is in much better physical and mental shape than a 65-year-old a few decades ago. “They are full of energy, and healthy and long-living,” she said. Her research has found that working helps keep seniors that way. 故选A。
根据“ The foundation that runs this nursing home and others in Kanagaw a Prefecture has raised the official retirement age to 70 but allows employees to keep working until 80 if they want to and can.(管理这家疗养院和卡纳格县其他疗养院的基金会已经将法定退休年龄提高到70岁,但允许员工继续工作到80岁,只要他们愿意。)”和“ Meanwhile, researchers are working on robots that can lift the elderly out of beds and wheelchairs.(与此同时,研究人员正在研制能够将老年人从床上和轮椅上抬起来的机器人)”以及“ Japan has agreements with Indonesia, Vietn am and the Philipp ines under which applicants who complete job training and pass a Japanese language test can work at a Japanese nursing home.(日本与印度尼西亚、越南和菲律宾签署了协议,根据协议,完成职业培训并通过日语考试的申请者可以在日本养老院工作。)”
    C
Cities are noisy, dirty, and full of traffic jams. But they don’t have to be that way. In a “smart” city, electronic sensors collect data on everything from traffic patterns and electricity usage to noise and light levels. Computer programs continuously analyze this data to find patterns and report important information. If you lived in a place like this, you’d be able to find out what’s happening at any location, right now. You might want to know how many people are at the local park, or how windy it is at the beach, or whether you’ll run into any construction projects as you bike to school. A smart city could deliver instant answers via an app on your mobile device.
Singapore, a city in Southeast Asia, already uses sensor systems. All 11,000 taxis in the city regularly report their speed, location, and direction through their GPS systems. Cameras throughout the city take pictures of traffic conditions. Website and apps share information about what’s happening on the city's roads, right now.
In New York City, some trashcans have sensors that send out an alert when they need to be emptied. These sensors also collect weather information. The city of Chicago plans to install dozens of sensors in 2016. The project, called “Array of Things,” will capture data on the current levels of light, noise, rain, heat, and wind around the city.
Originally, project organizers planned to check for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth signals coming from cell phones. But this plan made many citizens uncomfortable. Some worried that the sensors would dig into personal data on their phones or even identify individuals as they walked past. Organizers said they would not identify or track anyone, but they still changed the plan. Sensors will now analyze images from a camera in order to count people. Images will be deleted after the count is complete.
What do you think? Life in a smart city sounds convenient. But some of the data the city tracks may be about you. How much information are you willing to share?
    8. Which is NOT the main feature in a “smart” city?
    A. Electronic sensors. B. Computer programs.
    C. Mobile apps. D. Construction projects.
    9. In what field does the sensor systems work in Singapore?
    A. Environment. B. Weather.
    C. Transport. D. Photography.
    10. Why did the original project organizers change their plan?
    A. The signals made them uncomfortable.
    B. Citizens worried about their privacy.
    C. Sensors couldn’t analyze some images.
    D. Organizers always tracked the citizens.
11 In which section of magazine can we find this text?
    A. Entertainment. B. Nature.
    C. Society. D. Technology.
D 9. C 10. B 11. D
由第一段中的“In a “smart” city, electronic sensors collect data on everything from traffic patterns and electricity usage to noise and light levels. Computer programs continuously analyze this data to find patterns and report important information. 计算机程序不断分析这些数据以发现模式并报告重要信息)”和“A smart city could deliver instant answers via an app on your mobile device.
由第二段中的“All 11,000 taxis in the city regularly report their speed, location, and direction through their GPS systems. Cameras throughout the city take pictures of traffic conditions. Website and apps share information about what’s happening on the city's roads, right now.
由倒数第二段中的“Originally, project organizers planned to check for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth signals coming from cell phones. But this plan made many citizens uncomfortable. Some worried that the sensors would dig into personal data on their phones or even identify individuals as they walked past. Organizers said they would not identify or track anyone, but they still changed the plan.
由第一段中的“In a “smart” city, electronic sensors collect data on everything from traffic patterns and electricity usage to noise and light levels. Computer programs continuously analyze this data to find patterns and report important information.

In New York, students at 18 schools participate in a program called We Future Cycle. Started by Anna Giordano in 2014, it teaches kids to recycle, compost(堆肥), and reduce food waste.
Lunch areas at the participating schools are equipped with three clearly marked bins – compost, recycle and share. While the first two are common in schools, the third is rare, where kids can put their unwanted drinks, fruits, and even untouched sandwiches. Items in the container are available for any student that wants them. Whatever remains at the end of the day is donated to the food bank. Giordano says the three bins have helped reduce the number of trash bags from an average of 22 to just 2!
To ensure kids adopt similar habits at home, the non-profit has created extensive curriculum to educate families about the importance of sorting waste into the proper streams of recycling, composting, trash and food to donate They also urge parents to have open conversations with their kids about food choices.
But, as we’re all aware, kids aren’t the only ones that waste food - Adults are equally bad, if not worse! To prevent that, Josh Treuhaft founded Salvage Supper club in 2014. The occasionally organized dinners promise people a tasty multi-course meal for a mere $50 USD per person. It is also a plan to save waste because the delicious food is made from vegetables that are past their prime and, therefore, headed for the trash bin.
The other catch? Customers have to eat their meals inside a dumpster(大型垃圾装卸车)! The place, of course, is totally clean. It is just a symbolic gesture. In addition to helping people rethink their actions, Treuhaft also helps them do good by donating part of the profits to non-profits devoted to fighting against food waste.
    12. What is the aim of We Future Cycle?
    A. To collect money and food for poor children.
    B. To educate children to treasure and save food.
    C. To encourage children to share food with others.
    D. To inspire children to learn agriculture knowledge.
    13. Which word can be used to describe We Future Cycle?
    A. Successful. B. Official. C. Impractical. D. World-famous.
    14. What do we know about Salvage Supper club?
    A. It is mainly aimed for adults.
    B. It is founded by Anna Giordano.
    C. It provides free supper for people.
    D. It has enjoyed great success in many schools.
    15. What is the reason for people eating in a dumpster?
    A. It is money- saving.
    B. People like to be unique.
    C. It can remind people of food waste problem.
    D. A dumpster is much cleaner than a restaurant.
B 13. A 14. A 15. C
Started by Anna Giordano in 2014, it teaches kids to recycle, compost(堆肥), and reduce food waste”由此可知We Future Cycle?
最后一句“Giordano says the three bins have helped reduce the number of trash bags from an average of 22 to just 2!”
根据第四段“But, as we’re all aware, kids aren’t the only ones that waste food - Adults are equally bad, if not worse! To prevent that, Josh Treuhaft founded Salvage Supper club in 2014.” 故选A项。
根据最后一段“The place, of course, is totally clean. It is just a symbolic gesture. In addition to helping people rethink their actions,Treuhaft also helps them to do good by donating part of the profits to non-profits devoted to fighting against food waste.”

Putting one foot in front of the other will make you reach the finish line, and there are tools you can use to help you face down challenges, meet your goals and truly enjoy the process, rather than just getting by. ____16____ Below are a few ways that help to increase your determination to keep moving forward.

空前一句内容“Putting one foot in front of the other will make you reach the finish line, and there are tools you can use to help you face down challenges, meet your goals and truly enjoy the process, rather than just getting by.(脚踏实地会让你到达终点线,你可以使用一些工具来帮助你面对挑战,实现你的目标,真正享受这个过程,而不是只是敷衍)”描述应该享受坚持的过程,是对于首句提问“坚持的关键是什么?” E选项“Perseverance is a necessary quality for us to be successful.(坚持是我们成功的必要素质) ”中be successful与前一句中meet your goal相呼应,语境相符。故选E项。
2.根据空前一句“Maybe your goal is specific.(也许你的目标很明确)”及空后一句“Or maybe it’s a more general goal, like aiming to be a happier person.(或者它可能是一个更普遍的目标,比如想成为一个更快乐的人) ”可知,F选项“For example, you may want to quit smoking or get a better job.(或者,你可能想戒烟或者找一份更好的工作)”为对于具体而明确的目标的举例,符合上下文语境。故选F项。
3.根据下文“It’s really difficult to make progress unless you believe you’re capable of persevering.(除非你相信自己有能力坚持下去,否则真的很难取得进步)”及上一句的self confidence可知,本段描述自我相信的重要性。 故选A项。
下一句“Having the ability to stare life’s challenges in the face is a big advantage.(拥有直面生活挑战的能力是一个很大的优势)”描述能勇敢面对挑战的好处;空后一句 “When a big problem arises, it’s so much easier to ignore it or put off making a decision.(当一个大问题出现时,我们很容易忽视它或推迟做决定)”表示我们会出现的错误行为;C选项“But it can be really difficult to do.(但这真的很难做到) ”承上启下,符合此处语境。故选C项。
5.最后一段描述应从错误中吸取教训,根据空前一句“Think about what has happened.(想想发生了什么)”可知,空处应该表示下一步该做的事情,G选项“Then reflect on what you can learn from the experience.(然后反思你能从这次经历中学到什么) ”与本段第一句呼应,符合本段大意。故选G项。
