A
My Biggest Challenge
As a writer on an adventure sports magazine,I'd always fought shy of doing the adventurous stuff myself, preferring instead to observe the experts from a safe distance and relay their experiences to readers in the form of written language. Thus, when I was challenged to take part in a mountain climb in aid of raising money for charity-and to write about it afterwards-I was unwilling,to say the least.
I was lucky enough to have a brilliant climbing coach called Keith, who put me through my paces after my daily work.He gave me knowledge about everything from the importance of building muscle groups to how to avoid tiredness through nutrition. It quickly became apparent that the mechanics of climbing were more complex than I had imagined. There was the equipment and techniques I'd never even heard of,all of which would come in handy on the snow-capped peak I'd be climbing.
Aware of the challenge,Keith made a detailed action plan and I forced myself to stick to it,doing a daily workout at the gym and going on hikes with a heavy pack.I perfected my technique on the climbing wall and even went to climb the mountains to get vital experience. My self-belief increased alongside my muscle power and I became confident about finishing the climb.
All too soon I was on a plane to my destination. On that day, when I looked up at the mountain,I thought of abandoning it.But then I remembered all the hard work I'd done and how disappointed Keith would be if I gave up at the last minute-not to mention letting down the charity and the sense of failure I'd experience myself. With a deep breath I gathered my equipment and headed out into the sunshine to meet the rest of the group.
And as I sit here now, tapping away on my laptop,I'm amazed at the details in which I can recall every second of the climb:the burning muscles, the tiredness, the minor problems along the way.Could I have been better prepared?Possibly.Would I be back for another go?Thankfully not.The feeling of being excited when I stood on top of the world is a never-to-be-repeated experience but one I will enjoy forever nevertheless.
- At the beginning of the activity, the author revealed his ______ .

B. The equipment was the key factor to reach the peak.
C. Climbing was much more complicated than expected.
D. Hard training was far more important than making plans.
- How did the author feel after he succeeded in climbing the mountain? ______
A. He was relieved that he wouldn't have to do it again.

D. He was regretful that it wasn't as smooth as imagined.

My father loves his garden. He planted some seeds in it.But at that time,I didn't understand why working in the dirt excited him so much.
Unfortunately,in early May,my father was seriously injured in an accident. He had to stay in bed for a while. My mother had several business trips,so she couldn't take care of the garden.I didn't want my father to worry,so I said that I would take care of his garden until he recovered.I assumed that the little plants would continue to grow as long as they had water, and luckily it rained fairly often,so I didn't think much about the garden.
One Saturday morning,my father said to me, "Christine, the vegetables should be about ready to be picked.Let's have a salad today!" I went out to the garden and was upset to see that many of the lettuce leaves and carrots had been half eaten by bugs. There were hundreds of bugs all over them!
I panicked for a moment but then I quietly went to the nearest store to buy some vegetables.
When I gave the salad to him,he said, "Oh,Christine, what a beautiful salad!I can't believe the carrots are this big already. You must be taking very good care of my garden. " I felt a bit guilty.
Coming home,my mother saw the bag from the supermarket in the kitchen.I was embarrassed and I admitted, "Dad wanted a salad, but the garden was a disaster.I didn't want to disappoint him,so I went to the store. " She laughed but promised to help me in the garden and weeks later I was finally able to pick some.
I carefully made a salad and took it to my father. He looked at it with a hint of a smile. "Christine, the carrots are smaller in this salad, but they taste better. "
Now,I better understand how putting a lot of effort into caring for something can help you appreciate the results more, however small they may be.Perhaps this was one of the reasons for my father's love of gardening.
- Why did Christine originally promise she would do the gardening? ______
A. She was asked by her father to do it.
B. She was interested in growing vegetables.
C. She knew it was important to her father.
D. She wanted to improve her gardening skills.
- Which of the following was a problem in the garden? ______
A. Insects destroyed the lettuce and carrots.
B. Animals often dug holes in the garden.
C. The plants were given too much water.
D. The vegetables were lacking in water.
- Why could Christine secretly make the salad by using store-bought vegetables? ______
A. Her mother helped her to buy the vegetables.
B. Her mother regularly helped her to make a spray.
C. Her father couldn't see the garden's progress.
D. Her father went on a business trip at that time.
- What did Christine learn through her experience of gardening? ______
A. Always get ready for a rainy day.
B. Don't be disappointed by bugs.
C. Working alone produces results.
D. Hard work can pay off.

California has lost half its big trees since the 1930s,according to a study to be published on Tuesday and climate change seems to be a major factor.
The number of trees larger than two feet across has declined by 50 percent on more than 46,000 square miles of California forests, the new study finds. No area was spared or unaffected, from the foggy northern coast to the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the San Gabriels above Los Angeles. In the Sierra high country, the number of big trees has fallen by more than 55 percent;in parts of southern California the decline was nearly 75 percent.
Many factors contributed to the decline, said Patrick McIntyre,an ecologist who was the lead author of the study.Woodcutters targeted big trees.Housing development pushed into the woods.Aggressive wildfire control has left California forests crowded with small trees that compete with big trees for resources.
But in comparing a study of California forests done in the 1920s and 1930s with another one between 2001 and 2010,McIntyre and his colleagues documented a widespread death of big trees that was evident even in wildlands protected from woodcutting or development.
The loss of big trees was greatest in areas where trees had suffered the greatest water shortage. The researchers figured out water stress with a computer model that calculated how much water trees were getting in comparison with how much they needed, taking into account such things as rainfall, air temperature, dampness of soil, and the timing of snowmelt (融雪).Since the 1930s,McIntyre said, the biggest factors driving up water stress in the state have been rising temperatures, which cause trees to lose more water to the air,and earlier snowmelt, which reduces the water supply available to trees during the dry season.
- What is the second paragraph mainly about? ______
A. The seriousness of big-tree loss in California.
B. The increasing variety of California big trees.
C. The distribution of big trees in California forests.
D. The influence of farming on big trees in California.
- Which of the following is well-intentioned but may be bad for big trees? ______
A. Ecological studies of forests.
B. Banning woodcutting.
C. Limiting housing development.
D. Fire control measures.
- What is a major cause of the water shortage according to McIntyre? ______
A. Inadequate snowmelt. B. A longer dry season.
C. A warmer climate. D. Dampness of the air.
- What can be a suitable title for the text? ______
A. California's Forests:Where Have All the Big Trees Gone?
B. Cutting of Big Trees to Be Prohibited in California Soon
C. Why Are the Big Trees Important to California Forests?
D. Patrick McIntyre:Grow More Big Trees in California

The fast spread of the virus has led most Chinese citizens to wear face masks in public to help reduce infections. The Beijing-based Hanwang Technology Ltd.says it has created a new facial recognition system that is the first to effectively identify people even if they are wearing masks.
China is recognized as a world leader in the development of artificial intelligence and facial recognition system. The new system is based on the existing technologies developed over the past 10 years.
"When wearing a mask, the recognition rate can reach about 95 percent, which can ensure that most people can be identified, " Hanwang's vice president,Huang Lei,said. He added that the system's success rate for people not wearing a mask is about 99.5 percent. However, the new system struggles to identify people wearing both a mask and sunglasses. "In this situation, all of the key facial information is lost.In such cases recognition is tough, " Huang said.
Hanwang is now selling two main kinds of products that use the technology. One performs "single channel" recognition and the other is a "multi-channel" recognition, which can identify individuals in a crowd of up to 30 people "within a second".
Huang said officials can use Hanwang's technology to compare images with ministry(部门) records on individuals in order to identify and track people as they move about. The system can identify crime suspects(嫌疑人),terrorists or make reports or warnings,he added. While some citizens have expressed doubt to such tools, more people seem to have accepted the methods as a way to deal with the current health emergency.
So far,Huang says most interest in the new system has come from within China. But he sees the interest likely expanding if the virus continues to spread and the use of face masks increases.
- What is special about the new facial recognition system? ______
A. It has no relation to the existing tech.
B. It is being used both at home and abroad.
C. It can record people's temperature.
D. It can identify people even if they're wearing masks.
- According to the passage, the new system will probably be most helpful for ______ .
A. international companies
B. colleges and universities
C. the Ministry of Public Security
D. the Ministry of Finance
- What's most people's attitude towards the use of the new system? ______
A. Supportive. B. Disapproving. C. Uncaring. D. Doubtful.
- What's the purpose of the passage? ______
A. To show China's technological advances.
B. To introduce a newly developed system.
C. To demonstrate the innovation of China.
D. To advertise a new tech-based product.
Four Simple Ways to Stay Positive Trying to stay positive, both in good times and bad,is a great way to improve your quality of life.Try these four methods on a daily basis.
Don't think a lot about negativity.
Of course, staying positive hours a day, seven days a week is a bit difficult.Letting things get to you is normal, and it's actually healthy to cry or express frustrations once in a while. It's when those negative moments control your life that your emotional balance is at risk. (1) However, don't give that sadness another second in your day.
(2)
What you put into your body directly affects how you feel on the outside.Fill yourself with good, healthy foods like fruits and vegetables and limit snacking.Exercise is equally of great importance.Take a few days out of your week for at a least half an hour of activity, and try to stick to it. (3)
Be kind to others.
(4) Making someone's day a bit brighter not only puts a smile on his or her face, but also yours as well.Remember to smile and treat each person with pity and respect.Good deeds are contagious(传染的),and your positive attitude may spread among others.
Take it one day at a time.
Being positive isn't an instant thing. It's a steady effort that we follow every hour of every day.
(5) Instead, focus on living in the moment and doing what you can to make each moment better.
A.Eat healthy and stay fit.
B.Take your lunch breaks outside.
C.Don't worry about what the future may bring.
