    and in the afternn he harnessed his dnkey t a cart and laded the cart with fish and went a mile r s suthward t the village t sell it. If it had sld well he wuld cme hme in a mderately gd temper and say nthing t Shasta, but if it had sld badly he wuld find fault with him and perhaps beat him.
    There was always smething t find fault with fr Shasta had plenty f wrk t d, mending and washing the nets, cking the supper, and cleaning the cttage in which they bth lived.
    Shasta was nt at all interested in anything that lay suth f his hme because he had nce r twice been t the village with Arsheesh and he knew that there was nthing very interesting there. In the village he nly met ther men wh were just like his father—men with lng, dirty rbes, and wden shes turned
    up at the te, and turbans n their heads, and beards, talking t ne anther very slwly abut things that sunded dull. But he was very interested in everything that lay t the Nrth because n ne ever went that way and he was never allwed t g there himself. When he was sitting ut f drs mending the nets,
    and all alne, he wuld ften lk eagerly t the Nrth. One culd see nthing but a grassy slpe running up t a level ridge and beynd that the sky with perhaps a few birds in it.
      Smetimes if Arsheesh was there Shasta wuld say, “O my Father, what is there beynd that hill? ” And then if the fisherman was in a bad temper he wuld bx Shasta’s ears and tell him t attend t his wrk. Or if he was in a peaceable md he wuld say, “O my sn, d nt allw yur mind t be distracted
    by idle questins. Fr ne f the pets has said, ‘Applicatin t business is the rt f prsperity, but thse wh ask questins that d nt cncern them are steering the ship f flly twards the rck f indigence’. ”
      Shasta thught that beynd the hill there must be sme delightful secret which his father wished t hide frm him. In reality, hwever, the fisherman talked like this because he didn’t knw what lay t the Nrth. Neither did he care. He had a very practical mind.
