Watching kids’ cartoons can be an effective way to learn a language. The basic plot lines of kids’ cartoons are fairly simple and the characters speak more slowly, and the dialogue is typically standard and casual. Here are four worldwide popular kids’ cartoons which may help you with your English learning.
    Peppa Pig
Peppa Pig, the pink piggy, has gained worldwide popularity. There are even videos showing an American child speaking in a British accent to her mom after watching the popular cartoon.
    The Simpsons
The Simpsons in the 90s was smart, culturally savvy (有见识的), and unbelievably entertaining TV about an average American family. At its height, no show—animated or otherwise—could reach The Simpsons’ greatness. From the cleverness of “Marge vs. the Monorail” to everything Lisa Simpson ever said. The Simpsons was fearless and game-changing television.
    Once Upon a Time
Once Upon a Time is a French educational animation, created by Procidis. There are seven series (系列), each focusing on different aspects of knowledge. These are mostly historical, focusing on the overall history of mankind or specified historical fields, such as the lives and achievements of the explorers or inventors.
    Sazae-san
Sazae-san is more than a kids’ show. It’s a cultural institution, a national treasure and the longest- running animated series in the world, ever!
It’s about a typical Japanese big family living together in Tokyo. The central character is an outspoken but somewhat clumsy woman in her early 20s, living with her husband, son, father, mother, brother and sister all under one roof.
All of the characters are colorful and funny, and all are named after fish!
    21. Why does the American girl speak in a British accent?
A.She was born and brought up in Britain.
B.Peppa Pig has strongly influenced her.
C.The British accent is popular in America.
D.She wants to make fun of her mother.
    22. What will a fan of history choose to watch?

A.It is about an average American family.
B.It is the longest-running of the four.
    C.It is a well-received French cartoon.
    D.It includes seven different series.
    B
That morning, I dropped our eldest at kindergarten and returned home to let our two younger children play while I worked on my medical report. It was wonderful, but it hit me that my career in hospital wasn’t making a difference in anyone’s life. I needed something that would stretch my limits and push me to grow. My career enabled me to work from home. I could work from home, and become a foster(领养) mother, providing safety for a child who needed it desperately.
On Monday morning, I picked up the phone and dialed the number I had googled for the nearest Department of Children’s Services. The man on the other end was receptive to my questions and explained the next step of training, involving eight weeks of classes designed to prepare and educate foster parents. We continued through all the classes, the home visits, background checks, and seemingly endless steps.
Five long months after we were approved, the phone rang. In the middle of the night, I woke my husband and rushed to East Tennessee Children’s Hospital—Our placement was waiting for us in the emergency room, sick and lack of nutrition. It didn’t take long for us to realize the full depth of her suffering. Six months later, her half-brother came to us by our request. We now had five children under our care.
On August 12, 2019, our family of seven walked into a small courtroom. The children’s lawyer and social worker were there. With just a few words, our adoption was finalized. These two amazing children weren’t going home, because they were already home. We are their forever family and they are our forever children. We may not be able to change the entire world, but we have changed the world entirely for our new children.
    24. How did the author feel about her hospital work?
    A.Unusually demanding. B.Lacking in motivation.
C.Filled with challenges D.Packed with chances.
    25. What led the author to decide to adopt children?
A.She wanted to make a difference in other people.
B.She felt sympathetic for abused children she knew.
C.She felt confident about her ability to raise children.
D.She experienced training to raise children properly.
    26. What does the underlined word “placement” in Para.3 refer to?
A.The child to be adopted. B.The need to get trained.
C.The approval of adoption. D.The official at the hospital
    27. Why did the author appear at the courtroom?
A.To put the adopted kids elsewhere.
    B.To receive another adopted child.
C.To begin the kids’ adoption in her home .
D.To make the adoption officially legal.
    C
Scientists say a huge percentage of bird species are in danger because their habitats, or homelands, are disappearing.
Traditional migration paths take birds through countries that are not protecting the places for birds to stop, rest and feed. The scientists studied the migration or flight paths of almost 1,500 species. They decided that 91 percent of them passed through dangerous areas.
The major danger for migratory birds is development. Buildings and pavements have covered the places where birds stop and feed as they move from one part of the world to another. One of the scientists who worked on the study says, “Many of these important places have been lost to land reclamation (开垦) because of urban, industrial and agricultural land expansion”.
The problem, according to scientists, is that many of these small birds die along their migration paths because they don’t have a safe place to feed and rest. There is no place to restore(恢复) their energy for the next part of their journey. Countries in North Africa, Central Asia and those along the coasts of East Asia are having the most difficult time in protecting land. The scientists say these countries do not have enough areas that are safe for birds. One species that doesn’t exist now is the Eskimo curlew. “Our world gets poorer every time we lose a species,” one of the scientists says.
The researchers say countries need to work together and come up with safe stopping areas for birds that pass through their boundaries. For example, one country might have preserved safe zones for migrating birds. But a neighbor country might not. A bird might die.
One scientist who is not connected with the report tells Los Angeles Times that while some habitats are changing, more work can be done to make urban areas safe for birds.
He says small changes, like planting more native plants or keeping cats out of the areas birds would be likely to use, could make a big difference.
    28. What mainly caused the disappearing of birds’ habitats ?
    A. The decrease of awareness to protect birds.
    B.Natural disasters.
C.Overuse of land by human beings.
    D.The rising sea level.
    29. What may be the main reason for many birds’ death on the way of migration?
A.Exhaustion and hunger. B.Beast attack on the ground.
C.Hunting of humans. D.The long journey.
    30. According to the last two paragraphs, how should we protect the migrating birds?
A.By keeping fewer cats or dogs.
    B.By restoring their destroyed habitats.
C.By helping change the birds’ migration paths.
D.By preserving the ecological environments on their migration paths.
    31. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A.To tell us a huge percentage of bird species are in danger.
B.To analyze the reasons for disappearing of birds’ habitats.
C.To offer some solutions to the problem of birds’ habitats.
D.To call on people to protect the birds’ habitats.
    D
Water is a necessity of life. Rain, especially, helps plants grow and stay green. But too much rain, especially in cities, can lead to flooding. That can cause waste water systems to overflow and send pollutants into rivers and other waterways. To fight the problem, several cities in the United States are starting programs like rooftop gardens.
A team at the University of the District of Columbia in the nation’s capital has created a garden on the top of one school building. The garden holds many kinds of plants to help absorb(吸收) rainwater and grow food at the same time. Architect David Bell has designed five “green roofs” for the university. He says he is excited about the project because “it meant doing something more than just dealing with storm water management. It took advantage of a resource above the city and these flat roofs that aren’t doing anything really became something that was about urban(城市的) agriculture.” Rainwater is collected in large containers and sent through a system that waters the rooftop garden. The roof is filled with green life that attracts insects.
In cities, “you don’t have that many spaces to choose from and so rooftops are just (unused) space,” says Caitlin Arlotta. She is a student in the school’s Urban Agriculture program. The project is part of a research program to see which plants do well on rooftops. The researchers are looking at plants including strawberries, tomatoes and sweet potatoes. The university also has other green spaces. “We also have our own farm experiments,” Arlotta said. “ Within each of those growing systems, we want to be able to tell people which sorts of these crops grow the best.”
Sandy Farber Bandier helps run UDC’s Master Gardener program. It seeks to improve cities and make them beautiful by training people to become Master Gardeners. She says she’s been surprised by the garden’s output. “My biggest surprise was that we produced 4, 250 pounds of produce the first year and was able to spread that to people in need.” She also likes being able to show people who live in D. C. and others beyond the nation’s capital what and how food can be grown on a rooftop. “This is the future for food. You grow it here, you prepare it in a commercial kitchen, you distribute through farmers markets, food trucks, and then you recycle.”
32.What do we know about the rooftop gardens?
A.Rooftop gardens are very common in average neighborhoods.
B.There are many sorts of plants there which help take in rainwater.
C.They’re playing an important role in the city’s food supply.
D.Rooftop gardens are no more than containers to collect rainwater.
33.What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A.Rooftops can offer enough space to plant crops.
B.Many plants like strawberries can grow well on rooftops.
C.Some university students are participating in the Urban Agriculture program.
D.The plants in rooftop gardens are attractive to many insects.
34.How does Sandy Farber Bandier feel about the future of rooftop gardens?
    A.Confident. B.Doubtful. C.Worried. D.Ambiguous.
35.What is the best title for the text?
    A.Rainwater Necessity for Plant Life
B.Green Roofs—The Future of Urban Agriculture
    C.The United States’ Agriculture Program
    D.Rooftop Gardens—Food Paradise

Some high school students think it useless to receive higher education. 36 If you’re one of them, think again. Here are some reasons why you should go to college and receive a good education there.
37 We take that knowledge later on to build our careers after graduation. More knowledge will be gained after you start working, but without education, that job will not be within easy reach. Knowledge leads to knowledge.
While limited within the walls of the educational places, we openly explore other cultures of the world! 38 Other cultures have valuable things to share, enriching our own. Education also makes us want to travel and exchange with various cultures, getting more experience.
When there’s a recession (衰退) in the economy, those who attended college will be more likely to find a new job than those who only finished high school and have a limited skill set. The more education you have, the more chances you will get to improve the quality of your life as you have a better job and earn a higher salary.
When you’re skillful and knowledgeable, you gain access to people of similar backgrounds and tastes. 39 Good networking can benefit you a lot in your later life.
40 You can talk about ideas and events instead of just other people and what’s on sale in stores. An educated person doesn’t gossip (说闲话), having a preference to discuss ideas and listen to what other people have to say.
A.Therefore, they choose not to go to college.
B.We come to know that ours is not the only culture.
C.There is a negative side to earning a good education too.
D.A good education makes you a more interesting person.
E.It means a good education leads to excellent networking.
F.Schools and universities are the first places to get knowledge.
G.It has long been understood that an education can lead to long-term financial success.

As for when and where to meet, can we make it at 4:00 this Friday afternoon in your classroom? If it’s not convenient for you, please let me know what time is suitable for you in advance.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
    Yours,
    Li Hua
