After months of expectation and secrecy, the official mascot (吉祥物) of the 2022 Winter Olympic Games-a giant panda-inspired cartoon character-made its first public debut with cheers at Beijing's Shougang Ice Hockey Arena.
The panda is named “Bing Dwen Dwen” in Chinese. Bing means “ice” in Chinese, while Dwen Dwen suggests “health and cleverness”-characteristics also shared by pandas. Pandas are perhaps the most recognized animal species in China, organizers said.
“Pandas combine China's traditional culture and its modern appearance together with winter sports elements in a fascinating image (形象) that shows our great expectations for the Games and shows that we welcome the world,” said Beijing Mayor Chen Jining, who also serves as an executive president on the organizing committee.
“I have already seen the mascot and from what I've seen, it’s a wonderful choice,” IOC President Thomas Bach said before introducing the character.” “The mascot really takes in the best elements and characteristics of China and the Chinese people. It will be a great ambassador (大使) for the country and the 24th Winter Olympics.”
The ring of light surrounding the mascot’s face is suggestive of ice and snow tracks, as well as the flowing “ribbons” of the National Speed Skating Oval. The oval is one of two new competition sites in downtown Beijing expected to become a landmark of the Games, according to its chief designer Cao Xue.
The introduction of the mascots marks the key point of a journey that began in August 2018, when Beijing organizers started a global design competition for the mascots. A total of 5,816 designs were received from 35 countries, and were reviewed by Chinese and international experts in a comprehensive evaluation and selection process.
The new mascot will serve as spirited symbol of the Games that will take place in the three zones of downtown Beijing, the suburban district of Yanqing and co-host city Zhangjiakou in surrounding Hebei province.

Few people enjoyed getting shots at the doctor’s office. But many of these shots are important vaccines (疫苗) that help prevent us from getting certain diseases or types of infection.
Vaccines got their start in Europe in the 1720s, when a British woman named Lady Mary Wortley Montagu was visiting Turkey. She saw Turkish doctors purposefully inoculating (接种) people with small amounts of smallpox. Smallpox is a painful, deadly disease that had no cure at the time. But Lady Montagu was amazed that the patients not only recovered, but then proved to be immune (免疫的) to the disease!
Lady Montagu quickly returned to England, excited to share this new procedure. But inoculation took many years to catch on. One problem was that no one had a correct way of inoculating people safely. Occasionally, patients would become fully infected and then begin spreading the disease. However, inoculation eventually saved enough people for it to become the common practice for preventing smallpox.
Some years later, a scientist named Edward Jenner discovered that people who had been infected with a disease called cowpox became resistant to smallpox. Cowpox was less much harmful than smallpox. Jenner convinced doctors to inoculate people with cowpox, which led to a very safe vaccine and far fewer outbreaks of smallpox. Finally, a French scientist named Louis Pasteur realized that Jenner’s idea could be used to treat other diseases. Since then, vaccines have been made for many other diseases, such as polio, tetanus, and rabies.
Today, scientists and doctors continue to create new vaccines that could potentially save millions of lives worldwide.

B. The way vaccines work.
C. Three great scientists.

31. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A. Education. B. History. C. Health. D. Nature.

Food waste is a huge issue in our world today. In my own kitchen, I’m always looking for clever ways to prevent waste. By far, my biggest challenge when it comes to saving produce is greens. I’m talking about herbs, leafy greens and lettuces. They can go bad quickly if they’re not properly stored.
That’s why I’m so glad I found out about the OXO Greensaver Herb Keeper. It acts as a storage container for herbs, keeping them fresh and crisp. The way it does this is by controlling three things: airflow, humidity(湿度) and hydration(水合). To get the right airflow, the herbs stand upright in a basket that nests inside the main container, which prevents them from lying flat as they normally would in other containers. The humidity is controlled by the storage lid, and the herbs stay hydrated by water that is added to the bottom of the container. Genius!
My herbs did so much better in this container versus a plastic grocery store bag. In a bag, they usually start turning brown within a few days, and with the Greensaver, they lasted a week or longer. I also found this helpful in storing chopped lettuce. The lettuce greens were crisper and stayed fresh longer. I buy herbs and lettuce every week, so this is going to make a big difference in the amount of greens I waste, which is the most important. What’s more, it’s easy to clean up — all the Greensaver parts are dishwasher safe, so there’s no extra trouble involved.
If you also buy greens regularly, I highly recommend getting one of these. It will make a huge difference in the quality and shelf life of your herbs, lettuce and more so you can say goodbye to sad greens!
32. What’s the author’s biggest challenge in terms of saving produce?
A. It is difficult to store. B. It is easy to waste.
C. Greens go bad quickly. D. Greens are expensive.
33. How does the Greensaver work?
A. By controlling airflow, humidity and hydration.
B. By preventing herbs lying flat.
C. By using the storage lid.
D. By adding water to the bottom of the container.
34. What’s the biggest advantage of the Greensaver over a plastic bag?
A. Keeping green food much longer. B. Storing more chopped lettuce.
C. Less trouble in cleaning up. D. Less waste of the amount of greens.
35. What’s the author’s purpose of writing this passage?
A. To call on people not to waste green food.
B. To share using experience of the Greensaver.
C. To tell people how to keep green food long enough.
D. To tell people how to choose a food storage container.

Camping is fun and exciting. A well organized camping-trip can make us happy and relaxed from busy work and study. 36 Here are several tips for you to make a good preparation.
37 If it is just you or your family, the next step is not quite as important. However, if you are taking a group of teenagers or friends, read the next step carefully.
Make sure you get insurance information and health information before you do anything else. If someone is injured on the trip, the insurance information will make a huge difference in the care they receive. 38 For example, you cannot pack peanut butter if your friend is allergic(过敏的) to peanuts. If someone who is coming needs routine medicine, make sure they have it.
Pack an appropriate amount of food. Prepare enough for three meals and an optional snack per day. Try not to pack too many such perishable(易变质的)food items as cheese, chicken, and milk. 39 Also, remember to pack lots of water.
Gather all of the other things on the “Things You’ll Need” list and try to pack them in a small, lightweight bag. You can put smaller items in a backpack and the larger items like your sleeping bag can be carried in a garbage bag. 40
A. Get what you need in advance.
B. Decide with whom you are camping.
C. You’ll feel sick if you eat them when they go bad.
D. Care the environment and do not throw things around.
E. Health information is also important in planning the trip.
F. But to stay organized and safe, you must prepare for the trip.
G. These can be folded and put into a small space until needed.
