The next time you find an excuse to abandon your ambition, think of Chris Nikic. On November 7,2020, 21-year-old Chris Nikic made history as the first person with Down Syndrome to attempt and complete an Ironman. Organized by the World Triathlon Corporation, it requires athletes to swim 2. 4 miles, bike 112 miles, and run a full 26.2-mile marathon—in under 17 hours!
The event, which took place in Panama City, Florida, began early in the morning with a two-lap swim in
the Gulf of Mexico. Chris, who was tied to his coach for safety, completed the course well within 2 hour,
    20-minute timelimit.
The 112-mile bike ride, which Chris rode alone, proved a little more challenging. Not accustomed to drinking water while riding, he was forced to make multiple stops. To make matters worse, the young athlete was attacked by an army of red ants whose nest he accidentally stepped on during a break. He also had a bleeding knee after crashing while speeding downhill. Despite these setbacks, Chris managed to complete the lap before the 5:30 pm cut-off time.
The competition's final challenge-a two-lap 26. 2-mile run along the waterfront—started smoothly. However,Chris was tired out by the tenth mile. But with encouragement from his coach and cheering bystanders, the youngster somehow managed to cross the finish line in 16 hours, 46 minutes, and 9 seconds—almost 15 minutes under the 17-hour timelimit.
Chris is no stranger to overcoming challenges. Born with two holes in his heart, he underwent surgery at just five months old. He was too weak to walk independently until he was four. Due to his Down Syndrome, every expert his parents spoke to focused on the limitations rather than the possibilities.
To Chris, this race was more than just a finish line and celebration of victory. It's about being an example to other kids and families that face similar barriers.
19.What does the underlined part “an Ironman” in paragraph 1 refer to?
    A. A competition. B. An organization. C. A person. D. An artwork.
    20. Which of the following best describes Chris's bike ride experience?
    A. Romantic. B. Eventful. C. Pleasant. D. Smooth.
    21. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 5?
    A. Stimulate readers' interest. B. Introduce a new topic.
    C. Summarize the previous paragraphs. D. Add some background information.
22.What can we learn from Chris's story?
    A. Winning is everything. B. No dream is unachievable.
    C. Life is full of choices. D. Misfortune is a barrier to success.
    C
Like people, plants experience stress. And also, like people, the response to that stress can determine success.
Bad environmental conditions, such as drought, flood, heat and other stresses, affect yields more than crop pests and diseases. We are trying to find a way to equip plants with the ability to tolerate(容忍) environmental stress and maintain(保持) high yields, said Stephen Howell,a professor of genetics and cell biology.
Plant cells produce proteins and ship them to different parts of the cell. Under normal conditions, these proteins are folded into their normal, healthy structures as they are produced. When a plant is under stress, its cells produce poorly folded or unfolded proteins. Then a built-in system senses this and “sets off an alarm in the cell,"said Howell.
In response to the alarm, another protein(IRE1)starts working and creates a different process which activates (激起)the stress response genes whose products bring about defensive measures that help the plant survive.
“As it turns out, responses that are activated under stress conditions actually inhibit the growth of
plants,"said Howell.“This allows them to preserve their energy to survive the stress conditions."
For plants in the wild, this response is a help for survival, he said. In production of agriculture crops, however, this response reduces yields.
"You don't want crop plants to stop growing," Howell said.“You want them to continue to grow and produce even though they are under stress."
“With the new understanding of this stress response, the next step may be to silence the alarm system,”said Howell.“What may be important is to disable some of these stress responses. That may make the plant more productive under stress conditions,”
23.According to the text, what causes an alarm in the plant cells?
    A. The folded proteins. B. The changed proteins.
C.The defensive measures. D. The stress response genes.
    24. What does the energy preserved in the plants under stress conditions do?
    A. It helps the plants to survive. B. It helps to maintain high yields.
    C. It keeps the plants growing. D. It helps to produce proteins.
25.Which of the following is closest to the meaning of the underlined word “inhibit" in paragraph 5?
    A.Start. B.Continue. C.Promote, D.Prevent.
26.How does Howell intend to make crop plants maintain high yields under stress conditions?
    A. By making crop plants keep more energy. B. By making crop plants stop growing.
    C. By making the alarm system stop working. D. By making the alarm system respond quickly.
    D
Camping is a good way to spend time along with your kids and to show them how wonderful nature can be. Through camping, children can discover new things about nature, such as flowers, birds, and other small animals. Camping gives kids time to get away from all the electronics(电子)of today's culture. So it is necessary to plan exciting and enjoyable family camping trips with your children while they are young.
When planning your family camping trip, consider the activities your kids like: games, hiking, swimming, boating, bicycling, etc. Select a camping place that has some of the activities the kids are interested in. Meal planning is an important part of your camping trip. Plan the meals together, and kids love to choose what they want to eat.
When starting to pack for your trip, let the kids pack their own items (物品). Each person should have his/her own sleeping bag with a luggage bag to put it in. Personal items should be packed with their sleeping bags. Encourage the kids to put their items in a certain place and always return it when they have finished using it.
When you have arrived at your campsite, make all the camping activities a family activity, which will help
children to realize how important team-work is. Everyone can have his/her own job setting up the campsite. Meal time can be a fun time. So let the older ones help with the cooking on your outdoor camping stove while the younger ones get the picnic table ready.

27.Which of the following is the best place for a family camping?
    A. A place covered with forests.
    B. A place with a river and wild animals.
    C. A place where kids can find various foods they like.
    D. A place which provides many interesting activities.
28.What does the author advise parents to do while planning a family camping trip?
A.Encourage the children to take care of their own things.
B.Keep the children away from animals.
    C. Take more food to meet the children's need.
    D. Let the children learn by watching.
29.When at the campground, it is necessary to
    A. allow the children to cook B. give children enough time to play
    C. make everyone have work to do D. keep the picnic table full of food

    Believe in yourself.
A smile goes a long way. When you walk in the halls, don't keep your eyes on the floor. Raise your head and
make eye contact with other people, 34 Introduce yourself. Tell them your name and where you're from.
    Remember people's names.
You like it when people use your name, and so do other people. 35 Besides, ask them in a kind way if they have a nickname(绰号). You'd be surprised at how often this might come in handy.
    A. Be friendly to others.
B.Join in after-school activities you like.
C.Making new friends can be hard, too.
D.Never change who you are to try to fit in.
