A lady was standing in line behind me at the checkout. The clerk said she could order the book. but asked if I would mind letting the lady behind me pay for her purchases first. The lady behind me said no and that it was fine to wait.
It took nearly 15 minutes to put my order through! The lady behind me chatted agreeably with us for the entire time. When it finally came time for me to pay, I placed two $10 off cards on the counter. The clerk informed me the offer was only valid(有效) for the book I was purchasing in-store and wouldn’t work for the book I’d ordered. This meant that I’d have one $ 10 card left.
“You can come back and purchase another book.” the clerk smiled. “The offer is valid until the end of the week.”
I thought about this for a millisecond and then turned around to face the lady behind me who’d been so patient, kind, and charming through the very long wait at the checkout. “Here.” I gave her the $10 off card. She was very surprised and said. “Really?”

Since the day the car and the airplane coexisted people have dreamed of combining them into one all purpose, go-anywhere, do-anything vehicle. However, there are a lot of reasons why cars and airplanes have yet to join forces.
They have very different needs, like the number of wheels. The four wheels on a car distribute its weight and provide traction and stability. A 3-wheeled car is much more likely to roll when taking a turn at high speed. But airplanes have 3 wheels because when they're on the ground they don't need to take turns at speed, so a 4th wheel would just be unnecessary weight. Tricycle wheel arrangements are also better suited to landing in crosswinds.
Aircraft also have other needs like wings. Whether they're fixed wings like an airliner or rotary wings like a helicopter, to generate enough lift they have to be much larger than the restricted freeway lanes and parking spaces would allow. So most designs for flying cars have wings that are either detachable (可拆卸的)or foldable.
That hasn't stopped some people from trying, and now one Dutch company, PAL-V, thinks their Liberty design has made flying cars a practical reality.
In 2005, the company discovered the work of another Dutch company, Carver, which made 3-wheeled cars that leaned like motorcycles. As for generating lift, PAL-V chose a rotary design called autogyro. Unlike a helicopter, the rotor (旋转翼)of an autogyro is unpowered in flight. Instead, the air flowing over it causes it to spin and generate lift. Autogyros also have short takeoff and landing requirements, so setting one down in an emergency is less dangerous than in a fixed-wing aircraft.
The Liberty received road certification in Europe in October of 2020, hoping to deliver to their first customers starting in 2022.
28.What can be learned from Paragraph 1?
A.Flying cars have long been dreamed of by humans.
B.The coexistence of cars and airplanes satisfies people.
C.The car and the airplane are less popular nowadays.
D.Cars and airplanes were invented at the same time.
29.Why are the needs like wings and the number of wheels mentioned?
A.To compare vehicles like cars and airplanes.
B.To explain the functions of wings and wheels.
C.To present two major problems to be solved.
D.To show the basic rules of vehicle designs.
30.What is the advantage of Liberty over a traditional airliner?
A.It can be controlled more easily.
B.Its take-off needs less space and time.
C.It consumes less power when flying.
D.Its landing is less dangerous in emergency.
31.What conclusion can be drawn from the passage?
A.Europe gives Liberty a warm welcome.
B.Flying cars will replace the other vehicles.
C.Liberty can be seen globally once marketed.
D.PAL-V succeeds in making flying cars a reality.

As people are becoming more socially conscious about where their food comes from and how it impacts the planet, they are choosing animal-free plant-based options. Cow-free meat has been around for quite some time and the popularity of brands like Beyond Meat and cultivated meat from Aleph Farms and other are soaring. While there are a large number of plant-based milk substitutes, none of have the same taste of cow’ milk. Now, an Israeli food-tech startup Remilk created real dairy products without harming a single cow or the planet.
The company stresses that their product Remilk is not a milk substitute but rather is the real deal. Made from a special process called microbial fermentation(微生物发酵), milk is manufactured in a lab instead of in a cow. And the end product is very healthy. “In a very simple way, we take the gene that encodes(编码)for the milk protein,” said Aviv Wolf, CEO of Remilk. “The gene function as an instruction book for the production of the protein it encodes. And so, we insert the gene into a microbe that we’ve developed and it instructs our microbe to produce the specific protein in a very efficient way.”
The company says that the lab-produced milk tastes identical to the real thing and they hope to eventually replace cows by creating every dairy product sold. They expect to roll out plant-based cheese and yogurt in addition to milk. “Remilk was founded with the mission to stop using animal to produce our food because, as dairy lovers, we realize that giving up on milk is not an option,” Wolff said. “But today’s milk comes with an unreasonable price tag. The dairy industry is destructive to our planet, our health, and our animals, and is simply not sustainable any more.”
The environmental price tag of dairy farming is way too high. According to the World Wildlife Fund, dairy cows add a huge amount of greenhouse gasses to the atmosphere and contribute to global warming and climate change as well as foul the air around them. Dairy operation consume large amounts of water and run-off of manure(粪肥)and fertilizers from there farms get into local waterways. The production of Remilk uses only 5 percent of the resources and produces only 1 percent of the waste of producing cow’s milk according to company. And they accomplish this by being 100 percent cruelty-free dairy farms.
- What distinguishes Remilk from other milk substitutes?
- It enjoys broad popularity.
- It has the highest output.
- It comes in various flavours.
- It tastes the same as cow’s milk.
- What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
- The production of Remilk.
- The nutritional value of Remilk.
- The role of gene in making protein.
- The process of microbial fermentation.
- What can we know form Wolff’s words in paragraph 3?
- Remilk was set up for animal protection.
- Dairy industries should be shut down.
- Remilk aims to produce animal-free food.
- Price of cow’s milk are soaring there days.
- What does the underlined word “foul” probably mean in the last paragraph?
- Clean.
- Heat.
- Pollute.
- Consume.

An Activity of Collecting Used Clothes
Last weekend, our school held an activity of collecting students' used clothes with the purpose of helping the students in poor areas.
In order to organize it successfully, we made full preparations. First, we collected various used clothes which were still in good condition and sorted out the thick ones. Second, with enough clothes, the monitor in each class called the express company to send our parcels.
All the clothes we collected will play a role in helping the poor families against the cold weather. It's such a meaningful activity that students are all looking forward to the next chance of charity.
