Appreciating language
◆ Hw did the authr describe the desert in the first jurnal entry.
Firstly, the authr describes hw the sand dunes changed alng the way in time rder. When he first entered the Sahara Desert, he saw unending sand dunes that stretched befre him. Later, when he went deep int the desert, the sand dunes became enrmus, twering abve them n all sides. The wind was blwing grains f sand frm the tp f the dunes. Secndly, the authr uses vivid wrds and cntrast t describe the size and clr f the dunes. Fr example, when describing the size, he uses adjectives such as “enrmus” and the verb “twering”; the clrs f the dunes are made clear and vivid against the blue f the sky. Thirdly, the authr describes hw he feels abut the desert. Fr example, he uses the fllwing wrds like “wide beauty”, “cmpletely empty” and “calming and threatening” t express his amazement at the scene as well as his awe and respect fr nature.
◆ What did the authr see n the plains in the secnd jurnal entry? And please analyse hw the authr describe them.
Make the picture an actin sht
The authr describes Munt Kilimanjar twering int the sky, the tall grasses and trees dtting the plains and the wildlife wandering n the plains.T shw the whle picture f the plains and make the reader feel persnally n the scene, the authr arranges details accrding t their lcatin indicated by sme wrds, such as “ next t”, “ver”, “befre”, and “in the distance”. The picture unflds befre the reader like a wide-angle pht. Furthermre, t make all the landscapes, plants and animals as vivid and impressive as pssible, the authr applied many specific verbs like “ fund”, “reflected”, “facing”, “rse”, “dtted”, “pulling”, “eating”, “flapping” and “ mved”, as well as adjectives and adverbs including “rund”, “brilliant”, “highest”, “lng”, “lazily” and “slwly”, making the picture an actin sht. In additin, the authr als uses metaphr in the last sentence f paragraph tw, cmparing what he saw t the greatest shw n the Earth t express hw excited and satisfied he felt at that mment.
Critical thinking
Pay attentin t the title “ An adventure in Africa” and think why the authr uses the wrd “adventure” instead f “jurney” r ther wrds.
An adventure implies an unusual, exciting r dangerus experience, jurney r series f events. First, the authr, alng with his parents, experienced sme dangerus things. Fr example, they drve dwn the narrw muntain rad with sharp bends and their car gt cmpletely stuck in the mud. Secnd, during this jurney, the authr saw sme unusual and breathtaking scenery, such as the desert landscape, Munt Kilimanjar, and African wildlife wandering n the plains. He als had the chance t get clse t wildlife, riding camels, watching giraffes pulling leaves and elephants eating grass, and interacting with the mnkey.
