    A

I had heard about VR being used in the classroom but didn’t think I’d ever try it. I actually got a VR headset ( 耳机) as a New Year present from my friend and started searching for apps online to see whether it could be useful in my classroom. I soon found a free app through Google Cardboard and knew I had a lesson!

To use VR in the classroom, you need two things: a smartphone that can download the app or video, and a headset. To find the actual videos we’d be watching, I searched through free VR apps like Orbulus, Trench Experience VR and Cardboard. I also found hundreds of videos on YouTube. The key is to find videos made with the 360 cameras. While they don’t give the kids a 3-D experience like the apps, they are still amazingly immersive ( 沉浸式虚拟现实的) when viewed through the headsets.

So far we’ve had three lessons. I first used the headsets with my seventh grade U.S. History class. The Trench app allows students to “walk” through a trench ( 战壕) during World War I and learn about many of the tools used during that time. My second activity was working with the sixth grade Geography class. They used the headsets strictly as viewers to watch a 360 video taking them through a rocky landscape. My final activity was the most interesting one, according to the reactions ( 反应) of my eighth grade Civics students. I was able to find a White House 360 tour that was made a few years ago.

For the rest of this year, I plan to continue using apps and 360 videos in my classes. Next year I’m going to write to my boss asking for a 360 video camera so that I can begin to create my own VR field trips for the students.

    1. When did the author get the idea of trying VR in her classroom?

    A. When she was searching for apps online.

    B. After she received a VR headset as a gift.

    C. When she was having a conversation with her friend.

    D. After she heard about VR being used in the classroom.

    2. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

    A. The kids.                     B. The apps.

    C. The videos.                     D. The headsets.

    3. Which VR lesson was the most popular one among students?

    A. The Civics lesson.

    B. The Science lesson.

    C. The Geography lesson.

    D. The U.S. History lesson.

    4. What will the author do next year?

    A. Buy a 360 video camera.

    B. Create 360 videos by herself.

    C. Take her students on more field trips.

    D. Try new teaching methods in her classes.

    B

“Hurricane Laura is increasing in strength and is rapidly becoming a disastrous Category 4 storm. It could bring deadly storm surge (风暴潮), terrible wind and flash flooding to the Gulf Coast, and there are no signs it will stop soon,” the National Hurricane Center said in a briefing early Wednesday.

Hurricane warnings and storm surge warnings have been given to parts of the Texas and Louisiana coasts. More than half a million people were ordered to evacuate (转移) as the storm came near to the Texas cities of Beaumont, Galveston and Port Arthur.

The authorities used a number of buses to collect people and carry them to other areas around Texas, rather than shelter them here, said Allison Getz, a county spokeswoman. A key reason for doing it that way was concerns over the coronavirus pandemic (新冠病毒大流行), which makes it hard to shelter large groups of people in one place, she said. Only 15 to 20 people will be placed on buses, instead of the usual 50.

At the Robert A. “Bob” Bowers Civic Center, 14 buses lined up to carry away people who couldn’t evacuate themselves, many of them elderly or disabled. Robert Bailey, 68, has lived in Port Arthur since he was 9 and has stayed for every storm that’s hit the area — until now.

“This is a double whammy,” he said as he boarded a bus headed for Huntsville, Texas. “We don’t know what it’s going to be like.”

Not everyone was leaving. Simike Babineaux, 38, filled sandbags at a pavilion in downtown Port Arthur as her two kids, Hayden, 8, and Haleigh, 7, happily climbed the mounds of sand. Babineaux said, “It’s stressful. We don’t want to go because we might get the virus. We’re probably going to ride it out.”

State emergencies (紧急情况) were announced in Louisiana, and shelters were opened with simple beds set farther apart, among other measures taken to control coronavirus infections (传染病).

    5. What will happen according to the National Hurricane Center?

    A. Hurricane Laura will stop in several days.

    B. Hurricane Laura will become more damaging.

    C. Hurricane Laura will put thousands of people at risk.

    D. Hurricane Laura will hit most areas along the Louisiana coast.

    6. What can we learn from Allison Getz’s words?

    A. People were evacuated at great speed.

    B. The authorities tried to protect people.

    C. It was hard to move coronavirus patients.

    D. Many people were worried about getting ill.

    7. What does the underlined word “whammy” in paragraph 5 mean?

    A. Wrong choice.

    B. Serious failure.

    C. Difficult situation.

    D. Stupid plan.

    8. What did Simike Babineaux decide to do after receiving the warning?

    A. Stay to protect her family.

    B. Leave the city with her kids.

    C. Work as a volunteer for her city.

    D. Wait for the coming of the rescue team.

Floodwaters may not look all that dangerous on TV, especially if you’re a skilled swimmer.9  Because they can happen with little to no warning.

10  So sign up for local weather alerts (警报), and be sure to check local forecasts (预报) if the weather starts to look a little questionable. It also helps to know what places are most likely to flood in your area.

As soon as you receive word of a flash flood, immediately head for higher ground and stay put until help arrives. If you see floodwaters, follow the advice “turn around, don’t drown (淹没).” 11Just six inches of moving water can trip you up and knock you over. Anything deeper than your ankles (脚踝) is bad news, especially at night when it’s much harder to see. As you make your way to higher ground, avoid touching or getting near any electrical equipment since you’re probably wet or standing in water. 12

If you get swept away by floodwaters, hold or climb onto something as soon as you are able. Once you’ve climbed onto something, yell (大叫) loudly for help and wave an arm if possible. It’s hard for rescue teams to find people in the water, so anything you can do to make yourself more noticeable is a big help. 13  Keep yelling and waving until you’re rescued.

    A. Don’t give up!

    B. Don’t go home!

    C. That means avoiding all moving water.

    D. But flash floods are actually extremely dangerous.

    E. Besides, you can’t exactly tell how deep water is.

    F. And if floodwaters have reached your home, do not use your home’s power.

    G. Awareness and prevention is always going to be your best chance of survival.

    答案

    A

I actually got a VR headset as a New Year present from my friend and started searching for apps online to see whether it could be useful in my classroom可知,作者是在收到一副虚拟现实耳机后开始产生在课堂上运用虚拟现实技术辅助教学的想法的。

    2. C。 The key is to find videos made with the 360 cameras. While they don’t give the kids a 3-D experience like the apps, they are still amazingly immersive when viewed through the headsets可知,作者认为找视频时的关键是找到用全景摄像机拍摄的视频,虽然它们(这些视频)给孩子们的三维体验不如那些应用程序,但是它们依然能让孩子们沉浸在虚拟现实中。

    3. A。 My final activity was the most interesting one, according to the reactions of my eighth grade Civics students可知,八年级的市政课堂是最受学生欢迎的。

    4. B。 Next year I’m going to write to my boss asking for a 360 video camera so that I can begin to create my own VR field trips for the students可知,来年作者计划申请一部全景相机为学生们提供她自己创造的虚拟现实实地考察旅行。

Hurricane Laura is increasing in strength and is rapidly becoming a disastrous Category 4 storm可知,飓风劳拉将成为灾难性的四级飓风,会变得更具破坏性。

    6. B。 The authorities used a number of buses to collect people and carry them to other areas around Texas ... A key reason for doing it that way was concerns over the coronavirus pandemic以及Only 15 to 20 people will be placed on buses, instead of the usual

    8. A。 Simike Babineaux, 38, filled sandbags at a pavilion in downtown Port Arthur以及Babineaux said, “It’s stressful. We don’t want to go because we might get the virus. We’re probably going to ride it out.”

Because they can happen with little to no warning可知,此处作者主要说明暴发洪水非常危险。 D项中的dangerous与上文中的not look all that dangerous on TV相照应,形成对比关系,下文中的they则指代D项中的flash floods

    10. G。 So sign up for local weather alerts, and be sure to check local forecasts可知,本段主要说明的是预防意识的重要性。

F项内容承接上文内容,同时F项中的do not use your home’s power也与上文中的avoid touching or getting near any electrical equipment相照应。

    13. A。根据上文中的hard for rescue teams to find people in the water和下文中的Keep yelling and waving可知,作者建议人们如果被困在洪水之中,即使很难被救援人员发现,也不要放弃求生,要一直呼救。ADon’t give up!

I, as president of the school’s chess club, spent much time baking them可知,烘焙食品售卖活动是由学生(student组织举办的。

    16. A。 Students always stop by the sales area及常识可推断,学生们总是停在售卖区域去买个甜点(have a treat路上吃。

    17. C。由本句中的if they had wonderful shapes I ... spent much time baking them可知,知道学生们喜欢买外形美观的食品,所以花费了许多时间制作甜点。

All that remained were the packaged snacks可提示除了烘焙的甜点,还准备了袋装的点心。

四个选项中,只有choices(选择)符合语境。

    20. C。 By the final bell ... a couple of tables with the various treats及下文中的The ... students rushed to our tables可知,我们在下课铃响之前已经摆放好桌子,陈列好要售卖的商品了,故选set up(搭建)。

    21. B。本段中的the final bell of schoolrushed to our tables可提示学生们应该是饥肠辘辘(hungry

    22. B。 All that remained were the packaged snacks可提示我们烘焙的甜点已全部售完,故选sold

    23. D。 The bake sale went by really fast形成对比。

    24. A。 I, as president of the school’s chess club, spent ... the various treats that everyone had brought可提示设空处选bring。

结合下文中的like the cupcakes eaten at one’s sweet sixteenth birthday可知,烘焙食品承载着(hold珍贵的回忆。
