Louise Gluck has been no stranger to awards over her long and storied career, since her first publication in 1968. In 1993 , she won the Pulitzer Prize for her collection of poems, The Wild Iris. And on Oct. 8 she became the 16th woman to win the Nobel Prize in literature with the Nobel prizes first awarded in 1901.
Gluck was honored for her unmistakable poetic voice that, with simple beauty, makes individual existence universal. Often said to be an autobiographical poet, drawing from the inner parts of her life, "Gluck is not to be regarded as a confessional(忏悔( poet. She seeks the universal," Nobel Committee Chair Anders Olsson said in a statement.
Gluck,77, the author of 12 poetry collections, has been able to turn her life experiences into universal themes covering life, loss and isolation (孤独).Because of this, readers have often found her poetry to be “dark”. However, there is much more than darkness in her voice, as noted by Olsson. "It is direct and ... also a voice full of humor, “ he said.
For example, in her poem Snowdrops, she uses the coming of spring after winter to show rebirth of life after death. She leads readers down a depressing path only to reconnect with the light at the near end. At the conclusion of the poem, readers are left to feel the "cool wind of the new world" as they watch a new spring. This is often the case in Gluck's poetry, being able to feel joy even after not having done so for a long time.
Although she's already a well-known writer, experienced in exploring pain and healing (愈合),Gluck did feel honored to be given the famed Nobel award. However, when asked what the prize means to her, the lyric poet responded by saying, "It's too new... I don't know really what it means." Her only hope is that she can preserve her daily life.
    24. What do we know about Louise Gluck?
    A. She had her first collection published in 1993.
    B. Her poems are based on life experiences.
    C. The Wild Iris won her the Nobel Prize.
    D. She is a successful confessional poet.
    25. What does Olsson think of Gluck's poems?
    A. They are too dark for readers.
    B. They focus on individual existence.
    C. They are frank and humorous in style.
    D. They are mainly about human personality.
26, Why does the author mention Snowdrops in Paragraph 4?
    A. To show the features of Gluck's poetry.
    B. To introduce the main plots of this poem.
    C. To describe Gluck's creativity in choosing themes.
    D. To explain Gluck's purpose in writing Snowdrops.
    27. How does Gluck feel about winning the Nobel Prize?
    A. She is not qualified for the prize. B. She can't believe she got the prize.
    C. It makes a difference as expected. D. It may disturb her daily life.
    C
Canadians have a global reputation(名声)for being polite. A survey ranked Canada first out of 50 countries. Most Canadians think that while being polite can be a superficial attitude when people are communicating with friend and strangers, being “kind” to others generally requires a much greater effort and truly knows who you are as a person.
A national survey made by Environics Research Group for Coca-Cola Canada shows that on average each Canadian has shown kindness to others through random (随意的)actions four times in the last four weeks. Examples of their kindness include things such as opening a door for a stranger, offering to carry heavy items or giving up your seat for someone else in a public bus.
With millions of acts of kindness happening every day, most Canadians surveyed felt kind folks deserved more recognition for their actions. Coca-Cola Canada has decided to praise some very special individuals who make others happy with good acts in their own communities. The goal is to share their stories to help inspire others to give a little kindness too.
“ When it comes to kindness, seeing really is believing," says Carolyn Harty, Senior Brand Manager of Coca-Cola. "More than half of Canadians are inspired to pay it forward themselves when they see others making a kind gesture. It is these small acts of kindness that make a large difference and inspire people and create happiness. "
Sixteen-year-old Sheliza Kassam, from Canada, decided on her thirteenth birthday that instead of gifts, she and her family would help feed families in need. Her small action became larger and developed into a non-profit organization that Sheliza now runs to hold birthday parties for children living in shelters who otherwise would not be able to celebrate their special day.
Another teen Nathan Unrau started out with a one-time school charity project that just couldn't help. With the support of his parents, Lunches with Love has become a non-profit organization that makes and gives away 450 paper bag lunches to the local homeless people every other Saturday.
    28. For what are Canadians famous all around the world?
    A. Working hard. B. Being grateful for others' help.
    C. Behaving rudely in public. D. Having good manners.
    29. What does the national survey mainly tell us?
    A. Why Canadians show kindness. B. What kindness means.
    C. How kind Canadians are. D. When Canadians show politeness.
    30. What's the purpose of Coca-Cola Canada's praising the special individuals?
    A. To encourage all the people to spread kindness.
    B. To celebrate the great events of kindness.
    C. To show the ways of making others happy.
    D. To remind people of the importance of kindness.
    31. What did Sheliza Kassam and Nathan Unrau have in common?
    A. They were once supported by others.
    B. They offer others some food.
    C. They enjoyed staying with children.
    D. They came from the same organizations.

Plenty of science fiction ( sci-f) movies over the decades have shown us different versions of Mars. The truth about the Martian surface might be exciting because it's real. And with NASA's Mars 2020 mission set to launch this summer, we're facing more discovery.
So far, thanks to a decade of research enabled by NASA's Curiosity rover, we've learned that lakes, rivers streams and likely oceans used to appear on Mars. While its water disappeared over three billion years ago, it tells us that Mars used to be habitable. This knowledge confuses us because so far, we5ve seen no clear evidence of life there, not even a virus. But if Mars was once habitable, wouldn't it have life? NASA is now prepared to take the next step to answer this question with the launch of another rover (探测 器),Perseverance. Every time a rover goes to Mars, it just stays there, with no way to fly back home. So we have never brought rock or soil samples back from Mars.
Perseverance rover will change this. Its primary and unique purpose is to collect samples that a future spacecraft can return to Earth. These samples will tell us more about the geologic history of Mars than anything we've learned, which is already a lot. Since 2012,the Curiosity rover has traveled more than a dozen miles, making observations along the way with its 10 instruments.
Thanks to data from the Curiosity rovers Sample Analysis at Mars instrument, we know that Mars does indeed have organic materials. That's more complex than we expected to find on the surface of Mars. And that's exactly why we want to gather the most interesting samples and bring them back to Earth. We expect to find out much more about Mars once we get samples back from the Mars 2020 mission.
    32. What is the purpose of Mars 2020 Mission?
    A. To study the life on Mars. B. To travel around the universe.
    C. To show the power of NASA. D. To explore the Martian surface.
    33. What does the underlined word “habitable” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
    A. Enjoyable to visit. B. Suitable for living.
    C. Ready for changes. D. Convenient to travel.
    34. What was the problem with Mars exploration before Perseverance?
    A. The rovers could not reach Mars.
    B. Observations were hard to make.
    C. Samples on Mars couldn't be brought back.
    D. Study instruments got lost in the space station.
    35. Which of the following can be the best title of the text?
    A. New Mars Rover to be Launched B. Sei-fi Movies on Mars to be Made
    G. Curiosity to Bring Back Mars Samples D. NASA to Send Manned Rover to Mars

    Protecting Wild Animals
At present, as a consequence of human activities, many wild animals are endangered. Worse still, some of them may disappear forever.
There is no doubt that hunting wild animals has a bad influence. For one thing, it causes the imbalance of our ecosystem. For another, it leads to the spread of infectious disease from animals to us human beings, such as SARS and COVID-19.
As far as I am concerned, something must be done to stop this illegal act. Nature reserves ought to be built so as to offer more living space to wildlife. What's more, we should never have wild animals for food, as they are part of the environment.

    Text 10
M : Hello, everybody! Here I will share with you something about a famous runner Fauja Singh. In April 2011, Fauja celebrated his 100th birthday. He ran the Toronto Marathon in Canada and became the first person aged 100 years old to finish a marathon. But Fauja didn't run his first marathon until the year 2000. Why not? This is his story. Fauja was born in India. He grew up on the family farm with his parents and brothers. He wasn't a strong child and had some trouble with his legs. He didn't walk before he was five years old. But he was happy and life was good after he learned to walk. Later Fauja got married and had six children. But his happy life didn't continue. Unfortunately, his wife and two of his children died. Fauja then moved to England and lived with his other son, but he wasn't happy. So he started to go running. When he ran, he didn't think about the past and didn't feel upset. Then in 2000, at the age of 89, he ran his first London Marathon in a time of 6 hours 51 minutes. And he didn't stop since then. He said marathon changed his life and helped him feel happy again.
