The most welcome sight on a cold, wet winter night in London is the familiar shape of a London taxi cab approaching with its yellow “for hire” sign shining brightly. That shows it is ready to pick you up. Travelling by taxi in London is not just a way of going from one place to another. It is an experience to be enjoyed and remembered.
The main reason for this is the drivers, who are called "cabbies." Many of them are true Cockneys. This means they were born in the heart of London and speak their own special dialect(方言) of English. All of them know every street and famous building in the city, and all of them love to talk. A simple twenty-minute Journey across town can become very interesting. You may have a discussion about the government and its leaders or a friendly talk about the driver’s Aunty Nellie! One thing is for sure, it will never be boring. Cabbies know all the latest news about film stars, the Royal Family, government leaders, and popular singers or actors and actresses.
They also know the best places to eat, shop and relax. And they can take you straight to any large hotel, department store, theatre or museum. They know the shortest way possible without even looking at a map, because everyone who wants to become a taxi driver must pass a very difficult examination in order to get a license to drive a taxi. The exam is called “The Knowledge.” It is a written test, and in it drivers are asked the shortest way from one place to another. They must take into account the time of day—in rush hour, a longer route(路线) may be quicker—and describe the best way. Moreover they must never forget the one-way streets!
24. From what can we tell that someone is a Cockney?
A. Their interest. B. Their manners. C. Their speech. D. Their appearance.
25. What does the author suggest by mentioning "Aunty Nellie" in paragraph 2?
A. Passengers are full of curiosity. B. Cabbies’ topics are wide-ranging.
C. Aunty Nellie is popular in London. D. Londoners are friendly to each other.
26. What is the purpose of "The Knowledge"?
A. To qualify one to drive a taxi. B. To assess one’s driving skills.
C. To test drivers’ ability to write. D. To check taxi drivers memory.
C
The computer is a powerful tool. With it, teachers can improve the classroom experience in a variety of ways. But misuse of the computer will probably result in disadvantages.
To investigate the way technology is being used in our school district, I recently spoke with Jeanine Lowell, who teaches social studies at Lake Town Middle School. Mrs. Lowell informed me that computers have helped to increase students’ motivation and prepare them for life in a technological society. “These kids are probably going to be using some kind of computer system when they graduate from high school,” Lowell noted. “It’s important that we provide a proper introduction to them in the classroom.” Lowell also observed that the computers have made it easier to promote different areas of learning, so that students can work on a project or topic that relates to more than one subject.
With all of these benefits, however, come a few shortcomings. Although Mrs. Lowell has nearly wallpapered her room with warnings that state: “The computer is NOT A TOY”, not everyone in the class agrees with this idea. Some students get easily distracted (分心) by the internet and are quite good at making it look as if they are doing work when they are really checking their email or watching videos. “You’ve got to be three steps ahead,” she told me, “if you want to stay on top of what they’re actually doing on the computer.”
Some schools use some type of blocking software to ensure that students cannot access improper sites at school. More complex programs use a server-based, network-wide program instead of software that runs on personal computers. Research has shown that in a way these server-based blocking programs provide better security, because some students can disable the software on a personal computer.
However, there is no replacement for the watchful eye of a good teacher like Jeanine Lowell. There are also no electronic cure-alls for any of education’s many challenges. Technology is a useful tool, but that is all it is: a tool.
27. Where is this passage most likely from?
A. A newspaper. B. An advertisement.
C. A novel. D. A diary.
28. Which of the following isn’t the benefit of computer use in the classroom?
A. Improved motivation in the classroom.
B. Opportunities for learning across different subjects.
C. Increased preparation for the future use in the workplace.
D. Convenience of sharing ideas with people living across the globe.
29. The best way to prevent students from accessing improper sites on school computers is to______.
A. post warning signs throughout the classroom
B. use blocking software on personal computers
C. monitor what students do on the computers carefully
D. use server-based software programs on personal computers
30. What is the writer’s opinion on the use of computers in the classroom?
A. It does more harm than good.
B. It is only supported by experts.
C. It contributes to teaching in some way.
D. It is more beneficial to teachers than students.

Hidden away in the mountains of western Tanzania is one of the largest lakes in the world: Lake Tanganyika.
Environmentalists want to protect the beauty and biological diversity of this area from the harmful effects of overfishing and deforestation. However, in order to do this, they need the cooperation of people in the nearby village of Mahale. In this poor community, malaria and typhoid (疟疾和伤寒) are spreading, there is little access to doctors and 13% of children die before age 5. How can we expect people who cannot save their own children to care about saving the environment?
While it is true that the Mahale villagers are suffering, environmentalists argue that Lake Tanganyika is in an equally terrible condition. This lake is home to hundreds of fish species found nowhere else on the globe. Eighty mammal species live in the surrounding forests and mountains. 90% of Tanzania’s endangered chimpanzees live in this area. Damage to this ecosystem will result in untold losses. Furthermore, environmentalists see the destruction of the environment as a direct function of the villagers’ poverty (贫穷): as the fish population decreases, people are forced to clear more land to grow rice and corn. As they clear more land, the soil run-off from deforestation further reduces the fish population, making it even more difficult for people to survive on fishing alone. This cycle harms both the Mahale villagers and the environment.
To meet their goal of protecting Lake Tanganyika, environmentalists are now using a many-sided approach in Mahale: helping the villagers gain access to healthcare, educating fishermen and farmers about the effect of deforestation and their own role in the decreasing fish population, and protecting areas of the lake where fish lay eggs. Since natural resources can be the tool by which the people of Tanzania work themselves out of poverty, it is essential that these resources are managed well. By combining health services with protection activity, we can begin to heal the suffering in western Tanzania, for people and the land alike.
31. What do we know about Lake Tanganyika from the passage?
A. It leads to the people’s poverty.
B. It faces a serious situation now.
C. It is the largest lake in the world.
D. It’s home to some unique animals in the world.
32. Which of the following might environmentalists agree with?
A. Saving lives is more important than saving the lake.
B. Offering the locals healthcare directly contributes to less fishing of the lake.
C. Educating the locals can promote their awareness of environmental protection.
D. Gaining access to natural resources is the only way for locals to fight poverty.
33. What might be the best title for the passage?
A Protecting Lake Tanganyika
B. The Poor Life of Villagers in Mahale
C. The Importance of Lake Tanganyika
D. Villagers in Mahale and Lake Tanganyika

It was a bitterly cold and dark day in December. I was walking home from work, hungry and worn out after my long day. My team was due to complete our big project before we left for our winter vacation, but our boss delivered bad news that our client had contacted him and demanded a major revision on the project before they would accept it. The whole team was desperate—we were so close to finishing and now we would most likely have to work over and miss the entire vacation.
So caught up in my anxious thoughts was I that I failed to watch where I was walking until I stepped, with a dramatic splash (溅起), off the sidewalk and into a giant, half-frozen pool of water at the side of the road. I could feel the icy water into my shoes and socks, slowly soaking up into my trousers legs around my ankles. I sighed deeply and almost cried—I was having, as my grandmother always used to say, “one of those days when nothing goes your way.”
A wave of loneliness filled me. I loved my job and my coworkers and most days when I was satisfied with my life but now, especially around the holidays, the reminders that I didn’t have a partner or children like my sister or some of my coworkers did fill me with sadness.
As I looked down sadly at my unpleasant situation, I saw a brief spot of movement out of the corner of my eye. There, attached to a cold piece of cardboard in the middle of the pool, was a small patch of grey fur. As I watched, the little spot moved again, before letting out an outsized cry of sorrow and grief, so loud was it that you would think it came from a creature five times the size. It was a cat!
Paragraph 1:
Slowly and carefully so as not to frighten it, I bent down and picked up the cat.
____________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
My sister is a nurse, and therefore the family expert on caring for animals.

The Village is a historical drama series on the BBC and is written by Peter Moffat. The first season, filmed in 2012, takes place between the years 1914 and 1920. The second season, filmed in 2014, takes place in the 1920s. A future series is set to take place during World War II in the 1940s. The show tells the life story of Bert Middleton, a man who was born to a working-class family and raised on a farm in the small village of Derbyshire.
The first season was not very popular, People said that although the show was well acted, the subject matter and countryside were too depressing. This was due in part to the extreme winter weather experienced in Peak District National Park in England, where the show was filmed. While the very first show of season one was watched by 8.17 million people, the very last show of season one was only watched by 5.48 million.
The second season takes place in the spring, which offered viewers a sunnier and happier attitude, although the final show only had 4.27 million viewers. The second season was mainly filmed in Lyme Park, England, which includes a large house surrounded by gardens.

A simple twenty-minute Journey across town can become very interesting. You may have a discussion about the government and its leaders or a friendly talk about the driver’s Aunty Nellie!
A 28. D 29. C 30. C
故选A。
根据文章第三段中“…come a few shortcomings. … Some students get easily distracted (分心) by the internet and are quite good at making it look as if they are doing work when they are really checking their email or watching videos.(也有一些缺点……一些学生容易被网络分心,他们很擅长让他们看起来好像正在学习,而他们却是真地在检查电子邮件或观看视频。)”可知,学生在教室里上网,与世界各地的人们分享观点,但这也会让学生分心。这是在教室使用电脑的不利之处。故选D。
29.细节理解题。根据文章第五段中“there is no replacement for the watchful eye of a good teacher like Jeanine Lowell.(像Jeanine Lowell这样的好老师的严格监督是无可替代的。)”
Technology is a useful tool, but that is all it is: a tool.
B 32. C 33. A
根据文章第三段“While it is true that the Mahale villagers are suffering, environmentalists argue that Lake Tanganyika is in an equally terrible condition.(虽然马哈尔的村民确实在受苦,但环保人士认为坦噶尼喀湖的情况同样糟糕。)”
根据文章最后一段“To meet their goal of protecting Lake Tanganyika, environmentalists are now using a many-sided approach in Mahale: helping the villagers gain access to healthcare, educating fishermen and farmers about the effect of deforestation and their own role in the decreasing fish population, and protecting areas of the lake where fish lay eggs.
故选A。
上文“Ignorance can be frustrating, but the problem is not ignorance itself.” 围绕“表现欠佳者自吹自擂,表现良好者又妄自菲薄”这一现象,前文“This is because those who lack skills also lack the knowledge of what skills they're missing.” 本段主题是“Our ignorance, in general, shapes our lives in ways we do not know about.”(我们的无知,一般来说,以未知的方式塑造着我们的生活),前文“Put simply, people tend to do what they know and fail to do what they don't know.”
前句提到“This is a fact of life.”(这就是生活的真相),后文则以迪士尼乐园和奢侈品为例,表达了“the less you know about them, the less you'll miss them”(我们了解得越少,欲望也就越少)这一思想,与F选项“我们无法选择那些不了解的东西”表达的含义相吻合。故选F项。
由后文“ If we don't know about birth control, then we won't use it.”(如果我们不懂得节育,也就不会采取相关措施)来看,本段列举出的事例无疑都在表明无知会带来一些不好的结果,D选项“但无知也有代价”符合文意,点明了本段主题。故选D。

Paragraph 1:
Slowly and carefully so as not to frighten it, I bent down and picked up the cat. The cat protested loudly as I lifted it into the air, twisting and biting at my fingers with surprising strength. I was glad to see that it was so energetic—I hoped that meant it would be more likely to survive. Ignoring the kitten's protests, I carefully tucked it against my chest inside my coat to try and keep it warm. My ignorance made me anxious—I didn't know what I was doing and I didn't want to harm the poor creature. But, after another cry of protest, the cat became calm and went to sleep.
Paragraph 2:
My sister is a nurse, the family expert on caring for animals. I hurried to call and ask for her advice. She calmly and efficiently told me what to do as I hurried home, stopping briefly at a corner store to buy some supplies she insisted I would need. When I finally reached my apartment, I dried the soaked cat and fed it the food I had bought. The cat still looked at me with great suspicion, but the food seemed to be winning it over. As the cat once more fell asleep, now happy and warm, I smiled. After all perhaps I would not have a lonely vacation this year.
