Pulling a crop cart, the tractor can automatically（自动地）receive crops from a combine （收割机）and then send the cart to be unloaded（卸货）. The irrigation app
One of the most important jobs for farmers is to make sure that plants get water.A new smartphone app called Smart Irrigation can help.
Developed by an agricultural scientist at the University of Georgia,US, the app uses GPS technology to tell farmers when to water their crops. It connects to the closest weather station to learn about local rainfall， and it estimates （估计） how much water the plants need each day. It looks like a clay （黏土） toy. But it can be used as a whistle（哨子）.This is taiping nijiaojiao, a traditional toy from Zhenjiang, Jiangsu. Its birthplace was Huashan village in Zheajiang. It’s said to date back to the Southern Dynasty (420-589), with a history of more than 1,000 years.

Chinese is a beautiful but complex（复杂的） language, with tens of thousands of characters. When you come across a Chinese character that you don’t know, what do you do? You might look it up in a dictionary and find its pinyin. Pinyin, a system that uses the Latin alphabet （拉丁字母）, tells us how to read Chinese characters.
In 1958, Chinese linguist（语言学家）Zhou Youguang and his team designed pinyin. They created the system to help illiterate （不识字的）Chinese people learn how to read. This idea worked out quite well. The illiteracy rate （比率）in China dropped from 80 percent in the 1950s to 52 percent in 1964. In 2018, it’s only 4.08 percent, Guangming Daily reported.

Pulling a crop cart, the tractor can automatically（自动地）receive crops from a combine （收割机）and then send the cart to be unloaded（卸货）. According to technology officer Mark Barglof, “It is able to notice objects and won’t run over people or run into other equipment（设备）”.
The irrigation app
One of the most important jobs for farmers is to make sure that plants get water.A new smartphone app called Smart Irrigation can help.
Developed by an agricultural scientist at the University of Georgia,US, the app uses GPS technology to tell farmers when to water their crops. It connects to the closest weather station to learn about local rainfall， and it estimates （估计） how much water the plants need each day. It’s not just for farmers: people can use it to decide when to water their lawns.

It looks like a clay （黏土） toy. But it can be used as a whistle（哨子）.This is taiping nijiaojiao, a traditional toy from Zhenjiang, Jiangsu. Its birthplace was Huashan village in Zheajiang. It’s said to date back to the Southern Dynasty (420-589), with a history of more than 1,000 years.

Chinese is a beautiful but complex（复杂的） language, with tens of thousands of characters. When you come across a Chinese character that you don’t know, what do you do? You might look it up in a dictionary and find its pinyin. Pinyin, a system that uses the Latin alphabet （拉丁字母）, tells us how to read Chinese characters.
In 1958, Chinese linguist（语言学家）Zhou Youguang and his team designed pinyin. They created the system to help illiterate （不识字的）Chinese people learn how to read. This idea worked out quite well. The illiteracy rate （比率）in China dropped from 80 percent in the 1950s to 52 percent in 1964. In 2018, it’s only 4.08 percent, Guangming Daily reported.
Pinyin has been useful in other ways, too. It helps to promote（推广）the use of Mandarin（普通话）,so that people who speak different dialects （方言）can still understand each other.
Pinyin is also finding its place in other languages. The Oxford English Dictionary now includes more than 100 pinyin entries（词条）,such as jiaozi for “dumplings” and zhongguomeng for “Chinese dream”.
