The Qingming Festival, or Tomb-Sweeping Day, usually falls on either April 4th or 5th. “Qingming” is the fifth solar term of a year, and it is the only solar term on the Chinese lunar calendar that is also an important traditional festival. People across China enjoy a three-day public holiday during the festival, and they carry out different customs to honor their ancestors at the same time.
“Qingming”, meaning “pure and bright” in Chinese, comes as temperatures begin to rise and rainfall increases, indicating that it is an important time for plowing and sowing(耕作和播种). The festival therefore has a close relationship with agriculture.
It is also the right time for people to stretch out in nature and enjoy the greenery and blossoms that early April has brought.
Flying kites is also an important custom enjoyed by both the young and the old during the Qingming Festival. In the past, people would cut the string to let a kite fly freely. It is believed that doing so brings good luck and even keeps people away from diseases.
Traditionally in China, willows (柳树) are considered magical, so during the Qingming Festival, people wear soft willow branches and also place them on their front doors to get rid of bad things.
And of course, no celebration is complete without delicious food. With this in mind, sweet green rice balls are a popular dish during the Qingming Festival. They are made of a mixture of glutinous rice powder (糯米粉) and green vegetable juice, stuffed with sugared bean paste.
The Qingming Festival is a time to celebrate new lives in spring and enjoy the beauty of nature. Meanwhile, it is a festival in memory of the dead. That’s why it is also known as Tomb-Sweeping Day. For many kids, the Internet is at their fingertips. From computers to smartphones, a web of information is open to them. According to a new report, about three out of four kids aged 12 to 15 connect the Internet using a mobile device from time to time. Many younger kids are online too.
Julian Zeitlinger, 9, from New Jersey, uses his computer to watch videos and play games. To keep him safe online, his parents monitor his web use and discuss Internet safety with him. “I ask my parents whether something is nice or bad,” Julian says.
Mobile devices offer more ways than ever to share personal information. The information can be dangerous in the wrong hands. A study found that 62% of children aged 8 to 17 have had an unpleasant online experience.
Have you ever had to enter a parent’s e-mail address when signing up for a website? That safety measure is there because of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). The law says sites for kids under 13 cannot collect personal information, such as a phone number or full name, without a parent’s permission.
This July, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) will update COPPA for the first time since the law was created in 1998 when there were no smart phones. The nature of the way kids get online has changed, FTC lawyer Phyllis Marcus said.
When the changes take effect, COPPA will apply to mobile devices and newer forms of advertising. It will expand what falls under “personal information” to include videos, photographs, and services that give users location.
COPPA doesn’t cover everything that can go wrong online. That is why kids and parents need to know what to look out for and to stop and think before sharing information online.
“There is a misunderstanding that if a site is following COPPA, it is totally safe,” says privacy expert Shai Samet. He runs kidSAFE, which checks whether a site meets kidSAFE standards and is safe. “It’s important that kids know how useful the Internet is but that it can also be dangerous if you are not careful.” he adds.
25. Julian’s parents check his web use to make sure ________.
A. he stays safe on the Internet
B. he doesn’t play computer games
C. he controls his online time
D. he doesn’t watch too many videos
26. What’s one of the changes with COPPA?
A. It says no to any kind of advertising.
B. It prevents users from making their location public.
C. It broadens the concept of personal information.
D. It covers everything that goes wrong online.
27. People often hold the wrong idea that ________.
A. formal websites are always safe
B. COPPA can ensure their complete safety
C. the Internet is becoming safer and safer
D. daily checks prevent future online problems
28. Why does the author write the passage?
A. To introduce a new law.
B. To sell an online product.
C. To ask parents to look out for their kids.
D. To talk about online safety for children.

Singapore’s tradition of eating out in places called hawker centers is now recognized by the United Nations for its cultural importance.
A hawker is a person who sells food or goods and advertises by shouting at people walking by on the street. Hawkers are an important part of Singaporean culture. Open-air eating areas where hawkers sell their goods are very popular. Famous chefs, such as Anthony Bourdain and Gordon Ramsay have praised them.
On Wednesday, the United Nations, cultural agency, UNESCO, added the city’s “hawker culture” to its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Singapore sought to have hawker culture added to the list about two years ago. Now that it has been recognized, Singapore must provide a report every six years to UNESCO. The report must show efforts the city-state has made to save and support its hawker culture.
“These centers serve as ‘community dining rooms’, where people from diverse backgrounds gather and share the experience of dining over breakfast, lunch and dinner,” UNESCO said.
In the 1970s, Singapore cleaned up its streets so the city moved street hawkers to new eating centers. These areas were part of an effort to improve the island. Now, the centers offer many different low-cost meals for local people and provide a pleasing social setting. The 2018 film Crazy Rich Asians showed its stars enjoying meals at a famous night market. Some sellers even received Michelin stars from a famous restaurant rating system for their meals costing only a few dollars.
But, now the average age of a hawker in Singapore is 60 years old. Younger Singaporeans now want to work in offices. They are less interested in working in small restaurants. The COVID-19 health crisis also hurt sales, preventing foreign visitors and locals from eating out.
29. What do we know about hawkers from paragraph 2?
A. They are Singapore natives.
B. They are famous chefs.
C. They sell goods in the open-air area.
D. They are popular all over the world.
30. Why is hawker culture added to UNESCO’s list?
A. For the efforts Singapore has made.
B. For the report Singapore provided.
C. For its importance in showing Singapore’s culture.
D. For the recommendation by UNESCO.
31. Why is the film Crazy Rich Asians mentioned?
A. To show the popularity of hawker centers.
B. To introduce the stars.
C. To help the sellers receive Michelin stars.
D. To advertise the film.
32. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The average age of hawkers.
B. The difficulties hawker culture is facing.
C. The effect caused by COVID-19.
D. The future of the hawker culture.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Lee took a deep breath and let it out slowly. When his lungs felt comfortable, he dived beneath the water. Looking up, he could see the bright sun shining on the water’s surface. “Soon,” Lee thought, “I shall be able to hold my breath as long as David. Then I, too, shall be able to dive for pearls. ”
With lungs burning, he quickly surfaced and gasped(喘气) for breath. Lee was small for his twelve years, and he hated being treated as a child. David, his old brother, had been looked upon as a man long before he was Lee’s age.
Now, every day as the sun warmed the bay, David and the other young men went out to dive for oysters (牡蛎). With luck, there would be pearls in many of them. Many times Lee begged to go along, but David always refused.
So every day Lee would go to the shallow water to practice. With each day’s effort, his diving improved and he felt much at home in the water. “Tomorrow I shall challenge David.” Lee decided. The next morning, Lee rose early, hurrying to catch up with David, who was already on the beach. “David, wait!” called Lee.
The group of men around David grew quiet. Lee continued, “David, I say that I can hold my breath under the water as long as you can. If I win, I ask only that you treat me as a man and let me dive by your side.”
The men of the village gasped(倒抽气) and began to laugh. David looked amused, “And what if when you lose?”
“I will not lose!” He took a breath, “But if I should, I promise not to ask to go with you for a full year! The men of the village are here to judge.”
Hearing this, David looked surprised.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为100左右;
2. 续写部分分为一段,开头语已为你写好;

Today we took part in a rewarding activity—Tree Planting organized by the Student Union of our school.
Early in the morning, my classmates and I headed for a hill nearby with tools and seedlings. On our arrival, we got down to working together as planned. Some dug the pits and put seedlings in, some filled the pits with earth, and others watered them. With our efforts the hillside was lined with rows of seedlings.
Although we were tired, we tasted the joy of planting trees. Working creates beauty.
第二节(满分25分)
But with all of his friends looking on, Arthur had no choice but to agree. They soon reached the bay. The whistle blew and the contest began. After a deep breath, they both dived into the waves. As seconds passed, Lee could feel his lung burning, but his desire to win gave him an extra burst of energy. He cast a glance at his brother, who seemed to gather the last strength to hold his breath. Lee suddenly understood what losing could mean to his brother. Without thinking, Lee kicked his feet and rose to the surface a second before David. The men around them cheered, while David patted Lee and announced. “Today we shall have a new diver.”
