One of the first words I learned in Chinese, as it would be in any language I learned to speak, was thank you, or xiexie. I wanted the people in my new home to think I was polite. However, I soon learned that it wasn’t that simple.
Early on, I noticed that people seemed confused(困惑的) by me saying “xiexie”, as if it wasn’t necessary or normal. They looked in the same way to my use of “qing” and the way I would soften my requests, as in the British way of saying, “Could you pass me the salt?” instead of “Give me the salt!”
I was very confused until I realized that I was being too formal(正式的) between the person I was talking to and myself. My Chinese friends told me that using “please” actually had the opposite(相反的) effect of politeness – it hurts the building-up of close relationship.
But this makes things difficult for those with British manners, as saying “please” and “thank you” is something we learn from a very young age.
Deborah Fallows described the way a Westerner sees China as a strange mixture(混合) of politeness and rudeness in The Atlantic: “A person will pour tea or beer for everyone else before even considering pouring his own. But then another will announce ‘Gei wo yan!’, that is, ‘Give me salt!’, with no sign of a please or thank you involved.”
A good example of something that confuses foreigners in China is shouting “fuwuyuan!” at the waiter or waitress to get their attention, something that would make everyone else in the restaurant hate you in the UK or US.
I now understand why people don’t say “please” or “thank you” in China as often as we do in the UK. However, I’m afraid I still can’t bring myself to shout “fuwuyuan” in a crowded restaurant – my inner polite British person won’t let me!
25. Why did the author learn the word “xiexie” first when he first learned Chinese?
A. He thought it was the easiest word to learn. B. He wanted to be considered polite.
C. His Chinese friends advised him to do it. D. He believed that it wouldn’t confuse people.
26. The author learned from his Chinese friends that saying “xiexie” and “qing” _______.
A. is not necessary at all in China
B. is something people only say to strangers
C. is not good for developing a close relationship
D. is a way to judge if a person has good manners
27. Which of the following would the author probably agree with?
A. Britons and Americans usually have better manners than Chinese people.
B. It’s all right to shout “fuwuyuan” to get a server’s attention in a crowded restaurant.
C. Chinese people should say “please” or “thank you” as often as British people do.
D. Foreigners tend to be confused by Chinese people’s mixture of politeness and ruden

My challenge for you is this: to read a book for 15minutes every single day for a month.
Let me explain a bit, by telling you where the challenge came from. I have many things in common with my dad, like music taste and sense of humor, but sadly reading isn’t one of them. I can happily spend a whole day with a book, but my dad can’t read a book for longer than about 5 minutes. He reads emails, websites and papers for work, but not books. He’s busy, so I think sitting down to read for just 15minutes a day is a good way to relax and to introduce him to reading.
My dad is not the only person who avoids books. I know lots of people would rather relax on their computers or in front of the TV. Everyone is different and has their own interests, but I think there are lots of benefits to reading, which screen-based activities don’t have.
Firstly, it’s better for your eyes. Looking at screens can be very stressful for your eye muscles, and clearly you should avoid looking at screens for an hour before bed, to get a good night’s sleep.
One thing I personally love reading, is being transported to another world—I often forget the time or things around me! Reading is a great way to switch off before you go to bed, because you think more about the world of the book, rather than the real world, so you can truly relax. I know you can be transported to a different world in a film or a TV show, but I think books do it better.
I also enjoy hearing what people are doing and finding out what they think. Reading gives me the chance to get to know hundreds of new people! It also teaches you to see things from other people’s point of view, and understand other people’s decisions or opinions. With a book, you can hear everything a character is thinking or feeling—you really can be inside someone else’s head!
So give it a go! Take 15 minutes when you are waking up, going to bed, eating lunch, or having a coffee. If you read a lot, why not try 15 minutes of an English book, or pass the challenge on to someone else? Good luck, and happy reading!
28.The author mentions his father in the text to show_____ .
A. his father is busy B. reading is important
C. his father likes reading D. many people have no habit of reading
29.The author writes the text mainly basing on_______ .
A. his personal experience B. some scientific experiments
C. his father’s personal advice D. knowledge from books
30.The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 5 refers to______
A. helping readers sleep well B. making readers feel relaxed
C. transporting readers to a different world D. reminding readers of the real world
31.What is the author’s attitude to reading?
A. Negative. B. Uncertain. C. Supportive. D. Doubtful.

Tea drinking was common in China for nearly one thousand years before anyone in Europe had ever heard about tea. People in Britain were much slower in finding out what tea was like, mainly because tea was very expensive. It could not be bought in shops and even those people who could afford to have it sent from Holland did so only because it was a fashionable curiosity. Some of them were not sure how to use it. They thought it was a vegetable and tried cooking the leaves. Then they served them mixed with butter and salt. They soon discovered their mistake but many people used to spread the used tea leaves on bread and give them to their children as sandwiches.
Tea remained rare and very expensive in England until the ships of the East India Company began to bring it direct from China early in the seventeenth century. During the next few years so much tea came into the country that the price fell and many people could afford to buy it.
At the same time people on the Continent were becoming more and more fond of tea. Until then tea had been drunk without milk in it, but one day a famous French lady named Madame de Sevigne decided to see what tea tasted like when milk was added. She found it so pleasant that she would never again drink it without milk. Because she was such a great lady her friends thought they must copy everything she did, so they also drank their tea with milk in it. Slowly this habit spread until it reached England and today only very few Britons drink tea without milk.
At first, tea was usually drunk after dinner in the evening. No one ever thought of drinking tea in the afternoon until a duchess found that a cup of tea and a piece of cake at three or four o’clock stopped her getting “a sinking feeling” as she called it. She invited her friends to have this new meal with her, and so tea-time was born.
32. Which of the following is true of the introduction of tea into Britain?
A. The Britons got expensive tea from India.
B. Tea reached Britain from Holland.
C. The Britons were the first people in Europe who drank tea.
D. It was not until the 17th century that the Britons had tea.
33. What does this passage mainly discuss?
A. How tea-time was born in Holland.
B. The history of tea drinking in Britain.
C. How tea became a popular drink in France.
D. How the Britons got the habit of drinking afternoon tea.
34. When did tea become a popular drink in Britain?
A. In the eighteenth century. B. In the sixteenth century.
C. In the seventeenth century. D. In the late seventeenth century.
35. Why did people in Europe begin to drink tea with milk?
A. It tasted like milk.
B. It was good for health.
C. It became a popular drink.
D. They tried to copy the way Madame de Sevigne drank tea.

Everything is online these days, and it’s so easy to search online for whatever you want. The Internet is a valuable tool, but it’s easy to find yourself disturbed by it. For example, you’re working on an essay, and you need to do some search online. 36 Before you know it, you’ve spent an hour reading more information than you’ll be able to use. Maybe you notice an attractive title or something else that draws you away from your work. 37
Addiction to social media is closely related to our general addiction to the Internet. Everyone is always on their phones. 38 As a result, when I get to work, I don’t have enough attention and energy to put toward the task. If this sounds like you, then your productivity has suffered because of the way you use the Internet.
39 So we should learn to live with it. The only way to stop the Internet from taking up all your time and concentration is to disconnect. When you disconnect, you’ll get your attention back and work productively. Thus, when working on a challenging task, keep your phone out of reach. Meanwhile, go into your work with the intention of having greater focus and energy so that you’ll be discouraged from using the Internet. 40 This pressure will help you get the job done on time.
A. Generally speaking, the Internet can help you or block you.
B. The Internet has greatly changed the way our world functions.
C. You can also force yourself to finish the task in the fixed time.
D. Your search terms bring back more information than you need.
E. It will help you to draw your attention to more important matters.
F. I myself have surely caught myself checking my phone every ten minutes.
G. As a result, time goes by quickly but you still haven’t finished your work.

At this time some expression of irritation(恼怒)was felt in the son’s tone when he said to his father with a rebuff(生硬回绝). “It’s a crow, a crow.” A little while later, the father again asked his son the fourth time, “What is this?”
This time, the son shouted at his father, “Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again, although I have told you so many times ‘IT IS A CROW’. Are you not able to understand this?”
A little while later the father went to his room and came back with an old tattered(发皱的)diary, which he had maintained since his son was born. On opening a page, he asked his son to read that page. When the son read it, the following words were written in the diary:
“Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa, when a crow was sitting on the window. My son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied to him all 23 times that it was a crow. 作文一(满分15分)
My Hobby
Hobbies play an important role in our daily lives. Different people have different hobbies. Reading is my hobby.
I like reading for three reasons. First of all, books introduce me to a new world, which is colorful and without time and space limit. Through reading, I can trace back to ancient Egypt, the cradle of human civilization. It can bring me to the United States, a glamorous land I have been longing to visit. Secondly, reading can broaden my horizons. In the past years, most of my knowledge has been obtained from books. I have learned from many people by reading about their ideas on science, politics and society. Thirdly, reading bridges the gap between my dream and my goal. In order to achieve my dream in the future, I must keep reading. Reading has become part of my life.
In a word, reading can not only broaden our minds but also add more fun to our life.
作文二读后续写(满分25分)
Paragraph 1:
After reading the diary, the son was filled with tears .He began to reflect on the days when he used to sit together with his father. His father would patiently answer the same question all 23 times without feeling irritation while his father asked him the same question just four times! The son thought to himself: If I attain old age, how will my son look at me? Will he think of me as a burden? Will he shout at me because of my poor sight, poor hearing or poor understanding?
Paragraph 2:
Feeling ashamed, the son got down on his knees before his father. He made an apology to his father, begging his father to forgive him for his bad behavior. He said this aloud, “I promise to see you happy forever, Dad. It is you who have cared for me since I was a little child, showering your selfless affection on me. You worked hard to make money so that I could afford to go to university. I will serve you in the best day.”
