Boys and girls aren't allowed to use slang(俚语) words like “emosh”(emotional) anymore. The head teacher and staff of a school in Essex, England appear to have taken great pleasure in banning the type of slang used in reality television series TOWIE. Head teacher David Grant reportedly believes that by banning certain words and phrases and forcing students to use “proper English”, they will be in a better position to compete for jobs with non-native English speakers who may have a better command of the language.
What is always missed in such discussions is that English is in a constant state of change. You can disapprovingly count the number of times your teenage son or daughter says “like” in a single conversation, but you can't stop its rise in English in general, which is why a ban is so pointless. All it can possibly achieve is to prevent young people's creativity and expression. Do we really want a shy 13-year-old who has finally got up the courage to speak in class to be immediately silenced when
the first word he or she says is “Like ..”?
The ways we use a language are part of how we perform our social identities. Unfortunately, some students' break-times are disturbed by some kind of “language police” who seem to ensure those identities aren't expressed. Learning about language variation, about accents, dialects, and slang should be all part of their courses. I can only imagine how frustrated they must be when their teachers focus only on outdated, class-based, culturally-biased ideas of correct and incorrect usage.
Indeed, banning slang in schools is a short-sighted and helpless way of trying to produce young people who are confident and adaptable communicators. What we should be doing is helping students to explore the richness of the English language. Yes, using TOWIE slang is improper in a job interview, but no more inappropriate than using the Queen's English in the playground.
24. According to David Grant, the use of slang words may____________.
A. do harm to students' mental health
B. cause the rejection of non-native English speakers
C. encourage students' interest in reality television series
D. lead to the loss of native English students language advantage
25. Why is the example of “like” given in Paragraph 2?
A. To show that English is a changing language.
B. To suggest that parents should also learn some slang.
C. To imply that slang is not limited to the English language.
D. To point out that shy students may be not good at using slang.
26. We can infer from Paragraph 3 that “language police” should actually_________.
A. express their education ideas freely
B. encourage language diversity in schools
C. help students overcome learning difficulties
D. communicate with students in standard English
27. What does the author think of the act of banning slang in schools?
A. Proper. B. Necessary. C. Unsuitable. D. Confusing.
C
Listening to new music is hard. Not hard compared to going to space, but hard compared to listening to music we already know. Most people have all the songs they could ever need by the time they turn 30. From music to clothing brands, the joke is apparent: We love the things we know because we know them and therefore we love them. But there is a physiological explanation for that. It can help us understand why listening to new music is so hard, and why it can make us feel uneasy, even angry.
It has something to do with our brains. The way the corticofugal (离皮质的)system learns new patterns makes everything we already know far more pleasurable than everything we don't. When it comes to hearing music, a network of nerves called the corticofugal network helps sort the different patterns of music. When we hear familiar music, it can map onto a pattern perfectly. And then our brains release just the right amount of dopamine, the main chemical source of some of our most intense emotions. But when we hear something that hasn't already been mapped onto the brain, the corticofugal network goes a bit in mess, and our brains release too much dopamine as a response. When there is no map or pattern to match, music can register as unpleasant or bad.
It is reflected in Igor Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, perhaps the most infamous musical debut(首 次演出)in history. It's an orchestral ballet inspired by the Russian composer's dream about a young girl dancing herself to death. Drawing from the Slavic and Lithuanian folk music of his homeland, Stravinsky blackened his music with rhythmic and harmonic(和声的)tension, stretching phrases to their outer limits and never bothering to resolve them. The harmonies were difficult to name and his rhythms impossible to follow. Therefore, many members of the audience could not stand this new music. Then, after the ballet continued running at the theater for many months, a "fever of love and admiration" swept over the crowd at a concert performance of Rite one year later.
The act of listening to new music is hard, but it's necessary. After all, what is unheard could define history --might as well come for the show.
28. What phenomenon is described in people's choosing music or clothing brands?
A. People's desire to seek comfort in the familiar.
B. People's amazing memory in early years.
C. People's stable emotion at a certain age.
D. People's refusing to follow the crowd.
29. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The factors that affect our emotions.
B. The importance of exploring the unknown.
C. The approach to making new music more pleasant.
D. The reason behind difficulty in accepting new music.
30.What's the cause of Igor Stravinsky's unsuccessful musical concert?
A. Igor Stravinsky's unusual way of creating the music.
B. Igor Stravinsky's apparent mistakes.
C. The history behind the ballet.
D. The theme of the ballet.
31. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A. Fashion. B. History. C. Science. D. Education.

Take a road trip from Wisconsin up through Northern Minnesota. Look out your window and watch as maple-oak forests gradually give way to plant species like aspens, spruce and birch. This changing view occurs because Northern Minnesota sits between temperate(温带的)forests in the southern US and boreal forests (北方针叶林) to the north. It makes the region an ideal place to track the impact of a warming climate.
Scientists have guessed that, as global temperatures rise, plant species of both temperate and boreal forests will move northwards to escape warmer conditions. To test this guess, researchers have been artificially heating 18 small forest plots in the transition zone of Northern Minnesota ever since 2012. Using covers and heaters, the team increased air and soil temperatures. The long-term experiment is now offering valuable insights into how our changing climate will affect the structure and ecosystems of boreal and temperate forests.
The team found that boreal species, such as balsam fir and white spruce, are less able to emerge and survive under warmer conditions. They measured the boreal forests species’amount of photosynthesis(光合作用)taking place. Their results show that, as soils dry up in warmer conditions, boreal species reduce their photosynthetic rate, reducing the amount of organic matter available for growth. Overall, the seedling species richness in the temperate-boreal forest transition was reduced by warming. The researchers suggest that, unless the temperate species can offset the loss of the boreal species, the overall biodiversity of these forests is likely to decline.
This research is important because temperate and boreal forests contain46 percent of all trees on earth. Of the global carbon stock stored by forests, boreal forests contain 32 percent, temperate forests 14 percent. In the coming years, boreal forests will experience extreme increases in air and soil temperatures. An increase of 1.5°C has already been measured, with a rise of between 4°C and 6°C projected in the next century.
32. What made researchers choose Northern Minnesota to perform their experiment?
A. Its rich plant species. B. Its easy accessibility.
C. Its special location. D. Its warm climate.
33. What does the long-term experiment focus on?
A. The causes of decreasing forest areas.
B. The influence of human activities on climate change.
C. The changes of forests driven by rising temperatures.
D. The decline in the biodiversity of temperate and boreal forests.
34. What does the underlined word in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Lead to. B. Slow down. C. Add up to. D. Make up for.
35. The statistics in the last paragraph show that temperate and boreal forests_____________.
A. absorb less carbon dioxide per square meter
B. face a high risk of being hit harder in the future
C. play an important role in fighting climate change
D. have drawn public attention to environmental protection

Here are a few tips on how to stop multitasking so you can get better quality and more work done
in the time you have each working day.
Get enough rest. When you are tired, your brain has less strength to resist even the tiniest attention
seeker. 36 It is a sign that your brain is tired and it's time to take a break. When you are well rested and take short regular breaks throughout the day, your brain is fully refueled and ready to focus on the
work that is important.
37 When you allow outside influences to take control of your day, it is very hard not to be dragged off in all directions. When you have a plan for the day, when you arrive at work your brain knows exactly what it is you want to accomplish and will subconsciously (潜意识地)have prepared
itself for a long period of focused work.
Do your work when at your desk. Do not do your online shopping at work. 38 Only do your work when at your desk. This conditions your brain to focus on your work.
Learn to say no. 39 Saying “let me think about it” or "can I let you know later" can give you time to evaluate the offer and allow you to get back to what you were doing quicker.
Find a quiet place to do your most important work. Most workplaces have meeting rooms that are not occupied. If you do have important work to get done, ask if you can use one of those rooms and do your work there. 40
A. Plan your day.
B. Get up and move.
C. Do it in another place such as your home.
D. This helps you just focus on one piece of work.
E. This is why sometimes you find your mind wandering.
F. Most problems occur when we say “yes” immediately.
G. Keep your desk clean when you are doing your work.

书面表达( One possible version)
Hello, everyone!
It's a great honor for me to make a speech about the protection of sea creatures. The past few years have witnessed a rapid reduction in the number of sea creatures, some even being in danger of extinction. There are various reasons behind this. To begin with, people are not aware of the importance of protecting the marine environment, so large quantities of pollutants have been poured into the ocean. Besides, some people hunt illegally for profit, which results in a decrease in the types of sea creatures. Therefore, it's high time we took some effective measures to protect them.
That's all. Thanks for listening.
