Walking in the city is very different from walking in the park. A small psychology study suggests urban environments can slow your step and possibly increase your mental load. 36 It can case your mind and quicken your pace. The findings show that natural settings may potentially reduce cognitive(认知的)tiredness and improve reaction times straight away. 37

The first of the two experiments in the new study focused on people’s way of walking and cognitive load. During this trial, participants were fitted with sensors and a dozen motion control cameras were set up to watch them repeatedly walk down a l5-metre room at their natural speed. The wall opposite them showed an image of either a nature scene or a city scene. 38 On the whole, when walking in city settings, people reported that they felt more uncomfortable and they walked at a slower pace, indicating a higher cognitive load.

39 In the trial, participants were asked to distinguish between basic visual shapes on the computer while also in the presence of a natural or urban image(the same ones from the first experiment).

Measuring reaction times in both natural and urban settings, the team found results to support their idea. In urban environments, participants were slower in distinguishing between simple shapes. 40 Our brains take longer to process. However, more research is needed to prove that idea.

ANature influences us in many ways.

BThe second dug into some higher-level cognitive processes.

CA walk through nature does the opposite, though.

DThey said they couldn’t concentrate properly after walking.

    E. After each participants were asked to rate their discomfort.

    F. The reason is that urban environments are more distracting.

    G. The study includes two experiments with two different approaches.

News of the upcoming English Talent Show aroused the interest of my roommates and inspired us to perform.16 First, we chose the drama The Villains Lair, featuring the most iconic Disney villains as they plot their revenge. We wrote our script based on The Villains Lair, added amusing lines into the story and named it Villains' Tea Party. In the play, Godzilla comes to a tea party uninvited and guests try to decide whether the character is a villain. 17  We also drew inspiration from the animated film, Wreck-It Ralph 2.

We designed the settings and made most of the stage props by ourselves. 18 We even woke up early to rehearse acting onstage. Of course, we couldn't avoid arguing during the preparation over the lines and acting style. Thanks to our outspoken personalities, we dealt with many problems directly.

In fact, we thought we would be very nervous when we stood onstage, but we weren't. Though we carelessly broke a glass when we set the stage, we still completed the performance in a relaxing and calm way. 19 We had great success. Through this activity, we experienced the strength of cooperation and learned how to overcome difficulties.20

AA lot of humorous situations follow.

BOne of our favorite plays was about friendship.

CWe spent many evening classes secretly practicing.

DWe were together, and we teamed up with each other.

    E. Most importantly, the experience will shine in our lives.

    F. We started to discuss how to prepare for our English play.

    G. As a stage manager, I had to make sure everything went well.

A last-minute vacation can be a wonderful surprise and an escape from the ordinary. It normally takes a weekend or a few days. You might think that a last-minute vacation will cost a ton of money.16

If you decide to take a last-minute vacation to an area you visit frequently, call your usual accommodations and see if they offer a favorable price to repeat customers. If you have met the manager on your earlier trips, ask to speak to him and explain your situation.17So it’s possible for you to get a great deal.

Some hotels will often have rooms that they cannot fill.18Talk carefully, and you may be able to persuade them into giving you a discount.

19Save on transportation costs to a destination nearby. Visit a town you’ve never been to before, or stay a few nights in a city that you only go to for day trips. Local escapes can be just as relaxing as flying to Hawaii for the weekend, and will probably give you more time at your destination.

Teenagers are often excited about the chance to get out of their parents’ house for a weekend. So contact any young cousin you can trust in the house while you are on vacation.20You just need to leave him or her easy instructions and some food in the fridge.

AHe or she can be asked to feed the pets.

BSo prepare for a little unexpectedness and relax.

CMany small hotels and inns appreciate regular customers.

DFor them, making some money is better than making none at all.

    E. Actually, you may be able to save a few dollars if you plan smart.

    F. A last-minute vacation doesn’t have to be thousands of miles away.

    G. The key to a great last-minute vacation is a refusal to stress details.

The world has spent a long time living with the pandemic. But many people have become lazy about protecting their safety. Are you spending time indoors and unmasked with trusted friends? Or eating in restaurants or making more trips to the grocery store? New types of COVID-19 mean you should try to cut back on exposure. And where you can, double down on basic safety. 16.   .

    Wear masks

The N95 mask is the gold standard. It may cost too much or be hard to find. A cloth mask does a good job of filtering particles that cause infection. 17 — two cloth layers with a filter in the middle. Double masking is the best answer when you find yourself around strangers. The KF94 mask is a good bet.

    18

If you go to the store two or three times a week, cut back to once a week. If you have been spending 30 to 45 minutes in the grocery store, cut down your time in the store. 19. If you are waiting in line, be mindful of staying at least six feet apart from the people ahead and behind you. Try using delivery services or curbside pickup.

Spend less time indoors with people who are not from your household. If you must spend time with others, wear your best mask. Be sure any space is well ventilated (通风)(open windows and doors). Keep the visit as short as possible. 20

The coronavirus vaccine may or may not be the solution. As of now, you are the best answer. Take care. Do not let your guard down!

    AWash your hands frequently

    BSpend less time with others

CThe best mask has three layers

DDon’t stay outdoors alone for a long time

E.If the market is crowded, come back later

F.It is still best to minimize your social activities

G.Here are two important ideas about how to stay safe

Awesome English speakers are also great team players in conversations, which means they share the conversation. They listen, they respond, and they help others to participate as well and to enjoy themselves. 16 They don’t speak over the top of everyone. They’re there to participate.

However, just talking a little too much in conversations doesn’t mean someone is a bad person. 17 But the reason why this is especially important to you as an English learner is that you want to make sure that people enjoy talking to you when you’re speaking in English.

18 They talk more, find out more about you and allow you to build the relationship with them. And significantly, having more relationships means more chances for you to speak, and more chances for you to learn and to have someone to speak with regularly. 19

Obviously, you can’t expect random people to do that for you. 20 Certainly, this is not going to be easy but if you think a little more broadly about the benefits and the value of these skills and how they can help you to keep improving your English naturally, that’s interesting and valuable to you,

    AThey don’t dominate the conversation.

BThat’s meaningless and a waste of time.

CSharing the conversation will make people want to stay.

DIt doesn’t necessarily mean he or she is a bad listener, either.

E.Thanks to this, you might build a closer relationship with them.

F.Besides sharing the conversationyou shouldn’t keep silent all the time.

G.But if you build a good relationship with someone, then it might pay off.

16And in a way we totally mean that, but Fashion Tourism goes a step forward. Fashion Tourism is defined as the phenomenon of people travelling to and staying in places outside their environment to enjoy, experiment and possibly consume fashion.

But don't just picture yourself travelling to Lisbon and visiting one of Louis Vuitton or Miu Miu shops and buying a clutch (限量款)!17Fashion Tourism will not only make your credit card go crazy.

Fashion Tourism will give you something to tell your friends when you come back home. It will make you wear clothes that you are not brave enough to wear in your home town.18 Not mentioning buying the latest fashion magazines in foreign countries finding wonderful bargains in street markets, going to fashion museums and even trying to get inside a fashion show!

So you may ask why we would go across the world to buy things in different stores.19 We shop for essentials on holiday, to experience local culture through an engagement with local products and local crafts people. We look for exciting opportunities to shop while travelling and some destinations provide special tourist shopping activities for tourists to shop for goods.

The concept of Fashion Tourism is an enjoyable experience.20

AThink bigger and look around you,

BFashion Tourism is a popular way of shopping.

CShopping is simply a pleasurable activity in its own right.

DWhat's more, you can get endless new ideas and inspiration.

E.It will also bring you lots of new ideas and clothing inspiration.

F.You will be thinking: “Fashion Tourism? You mean Shopping Tourism, right?"

G.It is filled with the social need, fanciness and the discovery of specialty shopping.

One of the problems damaging our planet is the number of things we throw away. A more recent addition to the list of things we throw away is e-waste —  electronic items that are broken and not recycled. 16, but also because we lack the skills to repair them even if we know their value. Many millions of tons of televisions, phones, and other electronic equipment are abandoned each year. A UN report claims the 50 million tons of e-waste generated every year will more than double to 110 million tons by 2050, making it the fastest growing waste stream in the world. 17.

Recently, there’s a growing trend for repair events and clubs which could be part of a solution to the growing amount of electrical and electronic junk. The BBC visited a Restart Project in London, which is one of many found around the world. One of its operators, Francesco Calo, said that “This project makes total sense. 18. Besides, it helps people who cannot afford to get rid of items that have developed a fault.”

    19. An experiment at the University of New South Wales involves extracting (提取) these materials from electronic gadgets (小工具). Apart from just being recycled, the European Union, for example, is trying to encourage manufacturers to reuse some extracted electronic components. 20. With phones typically containing as many as 60 elements, this could be part of the solution to our appetite for new technology.

AFirst of all, this project prolongs the life of electric objects

BIt is partly because it’s cheaper to replace them than fix them

CIt is reported that many people have made a big fortune from it

DNow solutions have been put forward to give this e-waste a new life

E.So it’s thought that doing this could be more profitable than traditional recycling

F.As many electrical items contain valuable metals, another solution is e-waste mining

G.One of the reasons is that people don’t think their electronic items are fashionable enough

After his father was rushed to the hospital with brain bleeding, 43-year-old Yanatha Desouvre began to panic. So he did one thing he knew would calm himself —writing. 16 He wrote about his worry as well as his happy memories with his dad. “Writing allowed me to face my fear,’’ says Desouvre.

Psychologists refer to this kind of writing as “expressive writing’’, whose idea is to write about a painful experience or difficult situation. James Pennebaker, a psychology professor at the University of Texas, says hundreds of studies over several decades have looked at the potential benefits of expressive writing and found it can strengthen the immune system, including people with illnesses such as cancer and depression. 17

Expressive writing works because it allows you to make meaning out of a painful experience. 18 Then, translating that experience into language forces you to organize your thoughts. And writing it out gives you a sense of control. It can increase someone’s acceptance of their experience, and acceptance is calming.

What if you don’t consider yourself “a writer”? 19 Instead, do dig deep into your thoughts and feelings. The goal of the expressive writing is to find meaning in an unsettling event.

20 Expressive writing isn’t a magical panacea (灵丹妙药). It shouldn’t be used as a replacement for other treatments. And people suffering from a severe depression may not find it useful to do on their own.

ABut there are a few warnings.

BDon’t worry about spelling or grammar.

CYet it can be a powerful curing tool for many people.

DOver the next few weeks, he filled several notebooks.

    E. The mere act of writing out can control the brain activity.

    F. It can also help reduce pain and improve mood, sleep, and memory.

    G. Recognizing that something is bothering you is an important first step.

For most people, life has become a burden on their shoulders, and its weight is growing heavier and heavier, until one day they can’t carry it anymore. So how can we design a life that is less complex and more meaningful? With minimalism (极简主义). 11 The following ways will assist you in your journey to living a simper yet fuller life.

12 Most people’s living space is filled with things that are never used and don’t contribute to their well-being. Separate the ones you do need from the ones you don’t, and throw the latter right into the dustin — or better, give them away to people who might actually benefit from them.

Appreciate all the amazing things you already have. We constantly compare ourselves to others who seem happier, more beautiful and more important than us. We try our best to imitate those we envy. 13 We need to stop comparing and accept ourselves for who we are, with all our imperfections. Take a moment to appreciate what you have.

Do one thing at a time. Minimalist living actually means making the most out of each and every moment. We’re usually carrying out different tasks at the same time. So whatever we are doing, our mind is partly wondering somewhere else. 14

Develop mindfulness. 15 Thus you need to develop mindfulness. Mindfulness means fully attending to what’s happening in the present. There are many ways one can do so. Perhaps the most common way is to sit for about 30 minutes somewhere comfortably with your upper back straight and pay full attention to your breath as it’s coming in and out through your nose. In this way, you won’t be distracted by your thoughts.

AIt is about enjoying life more with less.

BStop consuming products you don’t need.

CYet no matter how much we try, we always fail.

DGet rid of things that don’t serve your happiness.

E.minimalist living requires a calm and undisturbed mind.

F.Stop multitasking and concentrate on a single thing at a time.

G.Unfortunately, our minds are filled with worries in our busy lives.

    How to Overcome Social Anxiety

Do you get nervous when you are tasked to give a speech? Do you get sweaty and uncomfortable during interviews? Many people get nervous or self-conscious on occasion, but social anxiety is more than just shyness or occasional nerves.16In fact, it becomes so intense that you may go to great lengths to avoid situations that can trigger it. Here are some self-help strategies to help you overcome social anxiety.

Analyze the negative thoughts contributing to social anxiety. For example, when you are worried about an upcoming social gathering, identify the underlying negative thought like “I’ll seem boring”. Be objective and ask questions like “Do I know for sure that they will get bored with me?”17

Stop unhelpful thinking patterns that fuel your anxiety. One typical example is mind reading, which refers to assuming someone is thinking something negative about you.18It occurs when you describe yourself with just one word such as “stupid”, or “failure”. These patterns of thought prevent you from seeing things as they really are. By transforming your way of thinking, you can change how you feel for the better.

19When you are in a social situation, you tend to get caught up in your anxious thoughts. You are convincing yourself that all the people are looking at you, thus triggering even more anxiety! To overcome it, take time to appreciate what other people are doing. Do your best to engage with them and make a genuine connection.

Gather up your courage to face your fears. Avoidance will only keep your social anxiety disorder going. It prevents you from becoming more comfortable in social situations.20 Also, avoidance prevents you from doing things you’d like to do. The way out is to start with a situation that you can handle like talking to one office mate. Then you can gradually work your way up to more challenging situations.

AFocus on other things instead of yourself.

BTo be exact, it is a slight fear of social situations.

CAvoid thinking about what other people are thinking of you.

DLabeling is another thinking trap you should avoid falling into.

E.The longer you escape a situation, the more frightening it becomes.

F.Figuring out the reasons for your anxiety helps lessen its negative impact.

G.If you have a social anxiety disorder, the stress of these situations is too much to handle.
