A study of 27,000 men showed those skipping (不吃) breakfast were at a greater risk of heart problems. The British Heart Foundation said breakfast helped people resist (抵制) sugary snacks before lunch.
The men, aged 45-82, were studied for 16 years. During that time there were more than 1,500 heart attacks or cases of deadly heart failure. However, people who skipped breakfast were 27% more likely to have heart problems than those who started the day with a meal. The researchers took into consideration other lifestyle risk factors (因素) such as smoking and exercise.
Researcher Dr Leah Cahill told the BBC: "The take-home message is to eat in the morning when you wake up, preferably within an hour. The results show that something is better than nothing, but it's always better to have something healthy and balanced."
She said the timing of the meal seemed to be key and waiting until lunch rather than "having breakfast" may be straining (损伤) the body over time. This could be increasing the risk of high blood pressure and fatness which could in turn damage the heart. "Don't skip breakfast," Dr Cahill suggested.
Victoria Taylor, an expert with the British Heart Foundation, said: “These researchers only looked at men aged over 45, so we would need to see further research to prove that breakfast has the same effect on the heart health of other groups of people. What we do know is that a healthy breakfast can make that mid-morning biscuit less tempting, as well as giving you another opportunity to widen the variety of foods in your diet. Cereals (谷类食品) with low fat milk are a good way to start the day. Try a banana or dried fruit on top and you'll be on your way to a fine day before you've even left the house."
24.What does the text mainly deal with?
A .The effects of snacks on the health of the heart.
B .An interview by the BBC on people's lifestyles.
C .What a healthy and balanced diet should contain.
D .The relationship between breakfast and a healthy heart.
25.Dr Leah Cahill's suggestion is that we should _____.
A .fix the time for each meal we eat in a day
B .make sure our breakfast is always balanced
C .eat our breakfast immediately after getting up
D .have breakfast within an hour after waking up
26.The underlined word “tempting” in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to "_____".
    A . attractive B .valuable C. obvious D. familiar
    27. According to Victoria Taylor, _____.
A .men over 45 are more likely to get heart diseases
B .fresh fruits like bananas are necessary for a healthy breakfast
C .it's healthy to eat some biscuit between breakfast and lunch
D .the researchers should have covered other age groups in their study

    C.
A new study has found the amount of antibiotics(抗生素)given to farm animals is expected to increase by two thirds over the next 15 years. Researchers are linking the growing dependence on the drugs to the increasing need for meat, milk and eggs. However, the drugs could quicken the development of antibioticresistant infections(感染).Such infections are already a major public health concern in the United States.
The World Health Organization(WHO)notes when people stop living in poverty(贫困),the first thing they want to do is eat better, rather than earn more money. For most people, that means their diet should contain more meat. With the rapid development of Asia, people there are eating nearly four times as much meat, milk and other milk products as they did 50 years ago.
To meet the need, farmers have put many animals into smaller spaces. As the animals are crowded together, the easiest way to deal with some of the problems of crowding is to give them antibiotics. It's clear that antibiotics help animals stay healthy in crowded environments and grow faster. But bacteria can develop resistance to the drugs gradually.
Nowadays, doctors find antibiotics that once worked against the infections no longer work. The bacteria have learned ways to fight against the drugs. The heavy use of antibiotics in farm animals is responsible for the growth of antibiotic resistance worldwide. Each year in the United States,at least two million people get antibioticresistant infections and at least 23,000 die from these infections.
Europe has banned the use of antibiotics to increase animal growth. And the United States is hoping to persuade farmers to stop using antibiotics for that purpose.
28.What causes the increasing amount of antibiotics given to farm animals?
    A.The desire for new drugs.
    B.The less effective antibiotics.
    C.The outdated farm technology.
D.The need for more various foods.
29.What do most people want to do first when they get rid of poverty according to the WHO?
    A.Making a lot of money.
    B.Focusing more on health.
C.Having more meat in their diet.
    D.Living in a better environment.
    30.What's the passage mainly about?
A.The negative effect of antibiotics on farm animals.
    B.The advantages of using antibiotics.
C.The reason for banning the use of antibiotics.
D.A new way of raising farm animals.

A light knock on the door brought me from my kitchen. Because we had just moved into the neighborhood, I couldn’t imagine who it would be. Opening the door, an old man stood there, who was dressed in dirty clothing and wearing dirty rubber boots. His hand hung a plastic bag.
“Can I help you?” I asked.
“Would you like to buy some fresh garden vegetables?” His blue eyes were hopeful.
“Are they from your garden?” I looked inside his plastic bag and saw some carrots with soil.
“Yes,” his voice was soft. “And I can get some apples from a tree in my yard. Would you like some of those, too?”
My heart softened, and I wondered if he was badly in need of money. With a sigh, I said, “Please step inside and I’ll get my money.”
The next day, he knocked at our door again. This time, my little four-year-old daughter got there first. “Oh, hello. Would you like to come in for some tea?” Without a second thought, the old man stepped inside and held out a broken basket with several apples. “From my tree,” he said, removing a worn cap. “You might like to make a pie.”
The three of us sat at the kitchen table and drank our tea. It was obvious that my daughter liked hosting a visitor in her never-ending questions. “What is your name? Where do you live? Why are your clothes so dirty?”
The homeless-looking man laughed as he answered each question. His name was Mr. Locket and he lived around the corner. His wife had passed away several years ago, and his children all lived far away. He was lonely. His need for company had sent him door to door selling fruit and vegetables. Ours was the only door opened to him that day.
    注意:1. 续写词数应为100左右;
    2. 开头已给出。
    Paragraph 1:
When he finished the tea, he said he had to go home and promised to return the next day.
    Paragraph 2:
Several years later, a small envelope was delivered to our home—a letter from the old man’s daughter.

    第五部分 书面表达(共两节,满分30分)
How is everything going? I’m delighted to tell you that an English singing competition will take place in our school hall next week and a host is in urgent need. I’d like to invite you to be our host. Here are some details about it.
The competition, aimed at enriching our school life and developing our interest in English learning, will start at 6: 30 next Tuesday evening and last for two hours. I think you're the perfect candidate for it. To begin with, you are a native speaker of English. More importantly, your previous experience as a host is a favorable factor.
Your presence is eagerly anticipated and I'm expecting an early and prompt reply. Best wishes.
    第二节:读后续写(满分15分)
    Paragraph 1:
When he finished the tea, he said he had to go home and promised to return the next day. My daughter excitedly waited for his next visit and made full preparations. As the old man visited us the next day, he was amazed by all of the preparations for him, including apple pies. His eyes were filled with tears. We became friends, and my daughter and I enjoyed the company the old visitor offered us. But before long, he had to move to live with his daughter and we hadn’t seen him ever since.
    Paragraph 2:
Several years later, a small envelope was delivered to our home—a letter from the old man’s daughter. She informed us that our dear old friend had passed away and sent us another letter written by the old man, which said, “Thank you for all your kindnesses to an old man. When I was lonely, you took me in. When I was badly in need of a family, you accepted me. My last few years are filled with happiness because of you.”

    Text 1
W: Good evening. My name is Mary. I’ll be your waitress for tonight. May I take your order?
M: No, I’m still working on it. This menu is not even in English. What’s good here?
    Text 2
    M: It’s 9:30 p.m. It’s time to go to sleep.
W: OK. Would you please wake me up at 7:30 tomorrow morning?
M: Sure. I have set the alarm clock at 7:00 a.m.
    Text 3
M: Is that your horse over there, with the white face?
W: No. Mine is the one with two white legs. Isn’t she pretty?
M: Oh, yes, standing next to the black one.
    W: That’s right.
    Text 4
W: I heard you sold your car. You want to ride a bike to work?
M: Not really. Now we’ve moved to a place near the subway station. So it’s quite convenient to travel to work.
    Text 5
M: Are you ready for your big day?
W: I think so. I have my dress, and we’ve ordered flowers. I just hope we’ll have nice weather outdoors. I don’t want a wet wedding.
M: Oh, don’t worry. Everything will be perfect.
    Text 6
M: Betty, ⑥I’m surprised to see you here on the underground train. ⑦I thought you drove to our workplace every day.
    W: I seldom drive now.
    M: Why?
W: The traffic is always so busy in rush hours, and I’m fed up with paying so much for gas.
M: Why don’t you take the bus?
    W: The buses are crowded.
M: I’ve taken the underground to work for two years, and it’s wonderful. ⑦It goes straight to our company.
    W: You’re right.
    Text 7
    W: George, are you OK?
M: Yes. Why do you ask?
W: I had a strange dream about you last night.
M: Really? What happened in the dream?
W: ⑧⑨In my dream, you told me you were going to stop working here.
M: But I love working here. Why would I say that?
W: I don’t know, but it was very clear in my dream.
M: ⑨I think it means you don’t like working here, and you are going to leave!
    Text 8
W: Peter, hi, how are you? I haven’t seen you for ages.
M: Hello, Mary. ⑩Well, it must be at least five years since we left school. What are you doing here?
W: I came for a meeting, business trip, you know. Anyway, how are you?
M: I’m good. Thanks. I still work in a school. What about you?
W: I have a new job now. So I have to travel a lot.
    M: What do you do?
W: ⑪I work for a travel agency. Working in a restaurant was just too boring.
M: Your new job sounds interesting. ⑫Have you got time for a coffee? So we could catch up(某人谈话了解近况).
    W: ⑫Sure. Why not?
M: Oh, there’s a nice cafe about two minutes from here.
    W: Let’s go then.
    Text 9
W: Hey, Steve. Did you and Jane go to Paris last weekend?
M: Well, I did, but Jane didn’t come with me.
    W: Why? Was she ill?
M: No, no, ⑬she had a lot of work at the office, so she stayed behind.
W: And who did you go with then?
M: My brother. You see, I couldn’t think of anyone else to ask. I asked him on Thursday and he said yes.
W: Hmm… so did you enjoy your holiday?
M: Yes, ⑯everything was fine and I laughed a lot, too.
    W: What do you mean?
M: Well, ⑭Jack wanted to speak to everyone in French. He greeted people in French and also…
    W: Can he speak French?
M: Only a little. Anyway, ⑭on Sunday we went to a restaurant and he spoke to the waiter in French. We wanted chicken, but in the end the waiter brought us fish!
W: And was that a problem?
M: Yes. ⑮Jack didn’t eat anything. You see, he doesn’t like fish.
    Text 10
W: This is Radio One. It’s six o’clock in the morning, and here is the local news. The bad weather has again brought lots of trouble in the local areas. ⑰The heavy snow which has been falling since yesterday afternoon has caused great difficulty. ⑱So please advise people not to drive to town. If you must go to town, take a bus or take a train. As the result of the bad weather, some schools in the countryside are closed. The students and teachers have not been able to get to school. In the city itself, however, schools open as usual. It’s going to snow all day today, and for at least two days. Bad news for many, ⑲although I guess kids would be happy.
Well, ⑳that’s the news at six o’clock. The next news will be in two hours. And now let’s have some light music.
