(2020·新高考Ⅰ卷)The Meredith family lived in a small community. As the economy was in decline, some people in the town had lost their jobs. Many of their families were struggling to make ends meet. People were trying to help each other meet the challenges.
Mrs. Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent a great deal of time visiting the poor. She knew they had problems, and they needed all kinds of help. When she had time, she would bring food and medicine to them.
One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a man sick in bed, his wife, who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy. The little boy—his name was Bernard—had interested her very much.
“I wish you could see him,” she said to her own children, John, Harry, and Clara. “He is such a help to his mother. He wants very much to earn some money, but I don't see what he can do.”
After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about Bernard. “I wish we could help him to earn money.” said Clara. “His family is suffering so much.”
“So do I,” said Harry. “We really should do something to assist them.”
For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly, he sprang to his feet and cried, “I have a great idea! I have a solution that we can all help accomplish (完成).”
The other children also jumped up all attention. When John had an idea, it was sure to be a good one. “I tell you what we can do,” said John. “You know that big box of corn Uncle John sent us? Well, we can make popcorn (爆米花), and put it into paper bags, and Bernard can take it around to the houses and sell it.”
    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
When Mrs. Meredith heard of John's idea, she thought it was a good one, too.

With everything ready, Bernard started out on his new business.

Mrs. Meredith, John, Harry 和Clara, Bernard, the sick man and his wife
love, help and act of kindness

可利用after that, later, on returning, although恰当过渡衔接。

The economy was in decline, people lost jobs, but they were trying to help each other.
5W(Who? What? When? Where? Why?)
Meredith曾去过Bernard家,续写部分可用paid another visit to the family呼应原文这个细节。
In 2019, I rescued a skittish donkey Bo came from a nearby cattle ranch and now lives peacefully on my ranch in the Bitterroot Valley of Montana, along with another donkey, three horses, and two dogs. But the key to Bo’s successful recovery from nervous rescue to happy ranch animal wasn’t anything I did. It was my grandson, Dylan.
When he was just shy of four years old, Dylan came with his parents to spend the Fourth of July with me on their way to Canada for a vacation. Bo kept his distance from the grown-ups, but he displayed an unusual fascination with Dylan. So we decided to introduce them. “Move slowly, keep your arms down, be quiet, and stoop down sometimes,” I told my grandson. Dylan cautiously approached Bo, step by step, holding a soft rubber comb. Bo held his ground, but he seemed interested with this little visitor. Dylan rubbed Bo’s shoulders and neck softly with the comb, removing remains of his thick winter coat.
It’s hard for an almost four-year-old to stay still for long, and motivation overcame self-control. Dylan made one quick move, and Bo jumped off with light steps. But Bo and Dylan were not ready to give up. Dylan approached again. To witness a preschooler learn to control himself in such a short time was amazing.
    注意:
    1. 续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 请按照如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
As we watched, true love developed between this once distrustful donkey and a gentle boy.

As we watched, true love developed between this once distrustful pony and a gentle boy. Over the next few days, Bo let Dylan throw his arms around his neck, pet his legs, hold his head in his hands, and pat his cheeks. And Dylan felt free to sit at Bo’s feet while Bo carefully sniffed his shirt collar and hair and rubbed Dylan’s back with his hairy chin. Just as Dylan had earned Bo’s trust, Bo showed attachment to Dylan. Thus, Bo seemed unable to tear himself away from Dylan when he and his parents had to depart.
They met again one week later as the family passed through on their return trip. It was almost dark, but Dylan and his dad paced to the far reaches of the ranch. Bo came to meet them enthusiastically. He hugged Dylan as if saying “long time no see” ---yes, a donkey can hug---without knocking him off balance. He is now a changed and trusting donkey. And Dylan is a miracle worker.
    ①抱住脖子:throw one’s arms around one’s neck/one’s arms clasp around one’s neck
②觉得可以随意做某事:feel free to do sth./feel at ease to do sth.
    ④走:pace/walk/wander
    ①小心:carefully/cautiously
    ②热情:enthusiastically/passionately/warmly
Just as Dylan had earned Bo’s trust, Bo showed attachment to Dylan.(高级短语show attachment to sb.:“表现出对某人的依恋”的使用)
He hugged Dylan as if saying “long time no see” ---yes, a donkey can hug---without knocking him off balance.(as if 引导的方式状语从句的省略)

Arshad had been out window shopping with his parents. That was all they did these days because they didn’t have enough money to afford all the shiny clothes, shoes and other fancy items the windows displayed. Even from a distance, they looked so promising and inviting that one couldn’t help but go over and look at them.
Ever since Arshad’s father lost his business and had to close down his garment shop, Arshad’s family barely had the money to make ends meet. They even had to move to a rented house, which was smaller and was situated in the shabbier part of the city. Unlike his previous house, where he had a big luxurious room all to himself, here Arshad had to share his room and bed with his naughty younger brother who always had the room in a horrible mess.
What was worse, the playground in this neighbourhood was nothing like the one in his previous neighbourhood; the swings were all broken, the monkey bars were all rusted and grimy, and the see-saw(跷跷板) only had one seat. There weren’t even any bookshops nearby where he could spend his free time, flipping through his favourite comic books and novels.
That day, Arshad and his brother were terribly bored when their father decided to take them all out for window shopping. When his father saw the sad look on Arshad’s face, he sat down next to him and said in a solemn tone, “Remember, there are children out there who don’t even have the things you do, like, warm clothes, a roof over their heads, good education and all the delicious meals that your mother prepares for you, three times a day. You should always be grateful for what you have.”
After the trip to the mall, Arshad’s father decided to take his two boys to a government school in their neighbourhood. The children in the school barely had chairs in their classrooms. Instead, they sat on rugged carpets draped over a hard, stone floor. Three or four children shared torn, second-hand books amongst themselves. The playground didn’t even have any swings and there was not even a cafeteria!
    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Arshad remembered how he always complained about the swings in his playground.
    ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Thinking of the happy children in that school, Arshad decided to do something.
    ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Arshad remembered of how he always complained about the swings in his playground. He felt a rush of guilt. At least he had a playground! Despite all these things, Arshad noticed how happy and satisfied all the children were. How they played and laughed, with not a single frowning face or a complaining voice. On their way back from the school, Arshad’s father said, “This is what I was talking about.”
Thinking of the happy children in that school,Arshad decided to do something. He prepared a gratitude list, jotting down all the things he was thankful for. Then he pulled out an empty cardboard box and put in all the things that he thought the children in that school might need—colouring books, toys and other such goods. When his mother asked about the box,he told her how he planned to donate these things. “I am sharing happiness.” he told his mother, his face beaming.
    ①认为:think/suppose
    ②询问:ask/inquire
    ③准备:prepare/make preparations for

    ②满意的:satisfied/approving
[高分句型1] This is what I was talking about.(运用了what引导的表语从句)
[高分句型2] He prepared a gratitude list, jotting down all the things he was thankful for.(运用了现在分词作状语)

Wrinkles of confusion rippled across Holly’s forehead as she opened the gift from her best friend, Susan.
“I...I thought you could use it for something.” Susan’s stammered explanation did nothing to help us understand why a twelve-by-eighteen-inch dark blue carpet remnant(残余物) was being presented as a birthday gift.
Holly, my daughter, tried bravely not to allow her disappointment to show. She laid the carpet on the kitchen counter, and the two girls headed outside to play.
The next morning, I carried a kitchen bag outside. My heart ached as I saw Susan’s carpet lying in the trash can. Hesitating only a moment, I reached in and picked it up. After giving it a light brushing, I brought it into the house and placed it in the hall closet. Occupied with the business of daily living, the carpet was soon forgotten.
Prior to Holly’s birthday, Susan had been a regular visitor in our home. On several occasions, she rode the bus home with Holly and was one of the few friends ever permitted to stay over on a school night. But now I realized it had been nearly three weeks since we’d even heard mention of Susan’s name. I missed her warm smile and eager-to-please ways.
One day, Holly had arrived home from school. “Susan invited me to come over to her house after school tomorrow,” she announced as she took her books down on the kitchen table. Although her voice carried a so-what attitude, I sensed she was pleased by the invitation.
Arrangements were made, and the girls rode home together on the school bus the following day. As I negotiated the winding country road that led to her house, Susan chatted nervously about her foster mom and the seventeen cats she had taken in and cared for. Soon we arrived at Susan’s house.

A woman wearing a shapeless sweater stood in the doorway to greet us as we approached the small shabby(破旧的) farmhouse. When we stepped inside, appearing into our sight were stuff lying everywhere and a hall poorly decorated with used furnishings. Shocked by this, Holly took a quick glance at Susan, whose cheek had already become flushed. But it didn’t take long for the girls to forget about it and dash out to have their fun. Susan’s mom treated me a drink and shared with me her fondness for Susan but also the poor girl’s past, which got my heart deeply struck. As daylight began to fade, we offered our thanks for the visit and said good-bye. On the way home, I decided to tell Holly all about Susan.
Hearing about everything of Susan, Holly sat silently in the car with her head stretching forward (前伸) as if willing the car to move faster. No sooner had we arrived home than she raced directly towards the trash can in the kitchen. Standing next to the trash can peering inside for a while, apparently she got nothing she wanted. Seeing that, I went inside and headed for the hall closet. “Is this what you were looking for?” I placed the carpet in front of her. “Thanks! Mom.” A tear or two slipped from her eye and dropped onto the remnant. Holly held it tightly in her arms, which I believed, was the most precious birthday present she’d received in the world. ( It is not the gift that counts, but the thought behind it. / A true friend will give you all that he/she can.)

Sigrid finished milking the cow and stepped out of the barn into the cold air. It was almost summer, but icebergs still filled the narrow sea. She set the bucket down, only to find that the milk reached merely halfway to the top. If we don't get more food soon, she thought anxiously, we will have to eat the cow. And then what will we do?
Grandfather used to tell her that when their Norse ancestors first came to Greenland, the fields were rich with grass. But in recent years, the climate has been getting colder and the summers shorter. When her grandfather was a little boy, there were as many as fifteen cows in the family's barn. Now there is just one. And the family has barely enough hay to feed it.
A gust of wind sending a chill down her spine, Sigrid stuffed her hands into the pockets to warm them. Her fingers felt her most prized possession, a piece of red cloth she'd had since she was a small girl. She took the cloth out of her pocket and let it unfold. It was barely longer than her arm. But its brilliant colour was bright against the stark(荒凉的) landscape. The cloth had once been part of a dress—in happier, more prosperous times. Nobody dresses like that anymore.
With ice-filled seas, ships no longer arrive with foods and goods to trade. All of a sudden, movement on the water caught Sigrid's eye. A light boat moved silently between the icebergs. An Inuk boy, about Sigrid's age, was looking her way, staring at the red cloth fluttering(飘动) in the breeze. A hunting weapon was tied to the front of his boat. And dragging behind it was a large fish. Sigrid knew there had been fights between the Inuit and the Norse. But the boy had a kind face and did not reach for his weapon.

A water bearer had two large pots, each hung on each end of a pole which he carried across his neck. One of the pots had a crack in it, and while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water at the end of the long walk from the stream to the master's house, the cracked pot arrived only half full.
For a full two years, this went on daily, with the bearer delivering only one and a half pots full of water in his master's house. Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments, perfect to the end for which it was made. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection and miserable that it was able to accomplish only half of what it had been made to do.
After two years of what it perceived to be a bitter failure, it spoke to the water bearer one day by the stream. "I am ashamed of myself, and I want to apologize to you". The bearer asked, "Why? What are you ashamed of? " The pot replied, "For these past two years I am able to deliver only half of my load because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your master's house. Because of my flaws, you don't get full value for your efforts".
The water bearer felt sorry for the old cracked pot, and in his compassion, he said, "As we return to the master's house, I want you to notice the beautiful flowers along the path." As they went up the hill, the old cracked pot took notice of the sun warming the beautiful wild flowers on the side of the path, and this cheered it somewhat. But at the end of the trail, it still felt bad because it had leaked out half its load, and so again it apologized to the bearer for its failure.

“Did you notice that there were flowers only on your side of your path, but not on the other pot’s side?” The bearer said to the pot. “That’s because I have always known about your flaws, and I took advantage of it. I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back from the stream, you’ve watered them. For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate my table and grace my house.” These words, like a warm current, flowed into the old cracked pot’s guilty heart and forced it to reflect on its true value.
We’re all cracked pots and each of us has our own unique flaws. In this world, nothing goes to waste. Nothing is going to deny you except yourself. Don’t be afraid of your flaws, acknowledge them, and take advantage of them, and you can be the cause of beauty. You may think that you are inefficient or useless in certain areas of your life just like the cracked pot, but somehow the flaws we have can turn out to be a blessing in disguise At the thought of this, the old cracked pot widened a shining smile as if convinced to undertake its “new dual tasks” willingly.
