I. Teaching aims and learning objectives

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

1. further understand the article and retell it by using their own words;

2. master the usages of some important words and structures;

3. know how to behave properly when visiting a place.

II. Teaching contents

1. New words and phrases: quiet, air, fresh, local, jogging, underground, famous, Western, opera, theatre, miss, forward, soon, a local theatre, Beijing opera, Western restaurants, look forward to

2. New structures: There are lots of things to do in Sunshine Town.

    Would you like to stay in a quiet town?

    Sunshine Town is not far from the centre of Beijing.

    It takes only 40 minutes by underground.

    Why not visit our local theatre and enjoy Beijing opera?

                We are looking forward to meeting you soon.

Step 1 Revision

1. Word scramble.

  T: What kind of place is Sunshine Town? (呈现quiet) I will show you more words in this way. Please put the letters in a correct order by spelling the word out.

2. Make up phrases.

T: Boys and girls, can you use these words to make up phrases?

3. Retell the passage.

T: Let’s read the phrases together. Work in group of four, and use these phrases to retell the passage.

Step 2 Presentation

1. to do不定式作定语

  to do不定式作定语，通常都放在其所修饰的名词、代词之后

T: You have done a good job. From your retelling, we can easily see that there are lots of things to do in Sunshine Town. Please use proper “to do” to fill in the following blanks.

2. be famous for & be famous as

T: Do you know this singer?

Michael Jackson/famous for/many popular songs.

Michael Jackson is famous for many popularsongs.

She is J.K. Rowling. Do you know what she is famous for?

 J.K. Rowling is famous for the book Harry Potter. And she is famous as a writer.

Beijing, famous, Beijing duck, the capital of China

 Famous as the capital of China, Beijing is famous for Beijing duck.

T: Famous as the capital of China, what else is Beijing famous for? Let’s watch a short video about Beijing and then make up sentences.

3. miss (doing) sth.

If you go to Beijing, don’t miss these places of interest.

Don’t miss visiting these places of interest.

He gets up early in order not to miss the underground.

 He gets up early in order not to miss taking the underground.

4. 时间表示距离

  We can take the underground to the centre of Beijing from Sunshine Town.

It takes 40 minutes by underground (from Sunshine Town to the centre of Beijing).

= It takes 40 minutes to take the undergroundfrom Sunshine Town to the centre of Beijing.

= It is 40 minutes from Sunshine Town to thecentre of Beijing by underground.   

Summary: (1) It takes (sb.) + 时间 + 方式 + from … to …

         (2) It takes (sb.) + 时间 + to do + from … to …

         (3) It is + 时间 + from … to … + 方式

T: If I underline 40 minutes by underground, how should we raise the question?

How far does it take from Sunshine Town to the centre of Beijing?

T: Work in pairs and make up a dialogue by using the structures above.

5. look forward to (doing) sth.

T: A group of exchange students will come to Sunshine Town.

We are looking forward to meeting the exchange students.

1. Make a summary

T: What language points have we learned  today? Let’s make a summary.

2. Make up a story

T: Work in groups of four and use the language points we’ve learned to make up a story.

3. Show time

T: Help choose the right words or phrases to complete the article.

【设计意图：再次巩固并检测学生语言点掌握情况，自然将话题转入自己的家乡。】

Step 4 Presentation

1. Ways to give advice

T: What places of interest are mentioned in the article?

What can we do by Hailing Lake?

T: Suppose the exchange students are coming to Lianyungang, what places of interest do you plan to take them to? What activities will you do? We will have a competition between boys and girls. Give as many suggestions as you can. Each of your ideas will get one point for your team. I will give you one minute to prepare. Here we go.
