    The Olympic Games are now a global event, but few know the modern origins (起源) lie in the sleepy Shropshire town of Much Wenlock.

    It was in the Midlands(英格兰中部) in the 19th century that a local doctor called William Penny Brookes relit(重新点燃)the Olympic flame. Inspired by the Olympic Games of ancient Greece, he founded the Wenlock Olympian Society; aiming through an annual(一年一次的)competition to “promote the moral(道德上 的),physical(身体上的)and intellectual(智力上的)improvement of the town and the neighbourhood of Wenlock, and especially of the working classes”.

    Started in 1850, the Wenlock Olympian Games soon attracted (吸引)thousands of audiences (观众) and competitors(参赛选手)from as far as London and Liverpool (although there was always at least one “locals-only” activity to keep local people happy). The games are still held today, although with a more traditional repertoire, along with traditional country sports.

    Much Wenlock's 1.3-mile Olympian Trail tells the story of how the local event became internationalwending(行,前进)its way through a typical English town centre from its starting point at the Much Wenlock Museum and Visitor Information Centre. The streets there are filled with displays of flowers and family businesses.
