Farmers and runners have a lot in common. There is the drive to struggle in tough conditions. There is the ability to do hard labor, outside in any condition. There is also the restlessness, which, however, might be unique to Elle Purrier St. Pierre, a farmer and a professional runner, who admits she has a tough time sitting still, as a result of her growing up on a dairy(奶制品)farm, where she developed a working attitude that is hard to change. "Cows need to be fed; they need to be milked. And if something breaks, you have to figure out a way to fix it, and you have your responsibilities no matter what," she says. "That attitude really helps me in my career now."
Purrier St. Pierre will run for Team USA in the Olympic Games in Tokyo this year, where she’ll compete in the 1,500-meter run. In February 2020, she broke the American record for fastest indoor mile, with a time of 4:16.85. A year later, she broke the American record for the indoor two-mile, at 9:10.28. And sure, she trains hard, and is diligent and naturally athletic. But according to Purrier St. Pierre, farming is what initially set her up for success on the track.
"Runners and farmers are similar in their lifestyle. It’s just something that they do every single day. They’re kind of addicted," says Furrier St. Pierre. "It’s just who you are."
While farming is a central part of who Furrier St. Pierre is, running is a more recent addition. She started running in high school, despite the school not actually having a track. Instead, she trained on the dirt roads near her farm or the mountain biking trails that surround the hilly town. They proved to be good training grounds. It was in college that she started to identify as a runner and pursue it as a career. Now, running is what she’s known for, and there are high hopes for her to bring home a medal from Tokyo.
Whatever happens at the games, Furrier St. Pierre is excited to come home to the support of her husband, who is unsurprisingly, also a dairy farmer. As much as running is her life and career at this moment, Furrier St. Pierre keeps one eye on her future, and that’s on the farm.
"I am such a homebody and very true to my roots. I’ll always be a farmer. I’m pursuing this career right now, as a runner, but I’m still very much a farmer."
4.What does Elk Purrier really mean by what she says in the first paragraph?
A.Life on the dairy farm is boring. B.Farming is actually too much work.
C.Her time spent on running is limited. D.It’s hard for her to stop moving around.
5.Which of the following is what Elle Furrier has achieved?
A.Winning the 1,500-meter run in America.
B.Setting two American records in running.
C.Winning the 1,500-meter run at the Olympics.
D.Setting a record for the indoor two-mile in Tokyo.
6.What does the author think of the surroundings for Elle Furrier’s running when she was a high school student?
    A.Beneficial. B.Unsatisfactory. C.Beautiful. D.Unique.
7.What kind of person is Elle Furrier mainly described as in the text?
A.An athlete who devotes herself to sports.
B.An athlete who has made great achievements.
C.An athlete who combines running with farming.
D.An athlete who prefers to be an ordinary farmer.

We’ve been hearing for decades about the complex intelligence of plants; but a new study, conducted by researchers at the University of Missouri, managed to figure out one new important element: plants can tell when they’re being eaten, and they don’t like it.
The word “intelligence”, when applied to any non-human animal or plant, is imprecise and sort of meaningless: research done to determine “intelligence” mostly just aims to learn how similar the inner workings of another organism is to a human thought process. But these studies do give us insight into how other organisms think and behave, whatever “think” might mean.
The researchers were seeking to answer an unusual question: does a plant know when it’s being eaten? To do that, the researchers had to first make a precise version of the vibrations (振动) that a caterpillar (毛虫) makes as it cats leaves. The theory is that it’s these vibrations that the plant can somehow feel or hear. In addition, the researchers also came up with other vibrations the plant might experience, like wind noise.
This particular study was on the thale cress. It actually produces some mustard oils (芥子油), which are mildly poisonous when eaten, and sends them through the leaves to stop caterpillars. And the study showed that when the plants felt or heard the vibrations made by caterpillars, they sent out extra mustard oils into the leaves. When they felt or heard other vibrations? Nothing. It’s a far more dynamic defense than scientists had realized: the plant is more aware of its surroundings and able to respond than expected.
There’s more research to be done; nobody’s quite sure by what mechanism the plant can actually feel or hear these vibrations. But it’s really promising research; there’s even talk of using sound waves to encourage crops to, say, grow faster, or send out specific defenses against attacks. Imagine knowing that a frost is coming, and being able to encourage plants to fruit faster by simply blasting them with music. That’s the kind of crazy sci-fi future this indicates.
8.What does the underlined part “other organisms” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Intelligence of plants. B.Non-human living things.
C.Human thought processes. D.The inner workings of plants.
9.What is the role of mustard oils produced by the thale cress?
A.Keeping the plant’s surroundings safe. B.Acting as defenses to stop caterpillars.
C.Making the plant aware of the vibrations. D.Sending warnings against caterpillars’ coming.
10.What does the underlined word “Nothing” in Paragraph 4 indicate?
A.The plants failed to identify other vibrations.
B.The plants sent out more mustard oils into the leaves.
C.The plants could identify vibrations from caterpillars.
D.The plants prevented caterpillars from eating the leaves.
11.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.The plans for the study. B.The problems with the study.
C.The significance of the study. D.The achievements of the study.

When children complain "It’s not fair!" they’re not just doing it to be annoying—their brains prefer equality in the doling out of everything from candy to money.
Researchers at California Institute of Technology used an MRI to look at how the brain processes rewards. They were looking at how the brain reacts to "inequality aversion", or not liking it when things aren’t fair.
What they found was that the ventromedial prefrontal cortex and ventral striatum-both associated with reward in the brain-reacted strongly to inequality even when the inequality was in their favor.
"It could have worked out in the opposite way, such that these reward processing regions might only have responded in a self-interested way and the reason that people showed inequality aversion in the lab is because they wanted to appear fair but in reality they only cared about themselves," says Tricomi, a professor of psychology.
The researchers gave some participants $50 while others began with nothing. Then, while they were in the MRI, they were presented with a series of possible money transfers. Sometimes they would be given more money; sometimes another person would get more. As the subjects thought about this money transfer, the researchers looked to see how their brains reacted.
As they’d expected, people who started out "poor" in the experiment had the strongest brain reaction when they were given money, and didn’t really react when money went to the "rich" person.
But in a surprise finding, the "rich" participants reacted just as strongly to the "poor" person getting money as they did when they themselves got money.
"Their brains weren’t simply wired for self-interest, but for fairness all around," says Tricomi.
12.How do people with inequality aversion react?
A.They dislike rewards. B.They prefer equality.
C.They prefer inequality. D.They hope to get rewards.
13.What was the purpose of the money transfers in the experiment?
A.To increase inequality. B.To reduce inequality.
C.To create a fair situation. D.To create an unfair situation.
14.What do we know about the people who started out "poor" in the experiment?
A.They were given no money at first. B.They were given little money at first.
C.They were given no money all the time. D.They were given little money all the time.
15.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.Our Brains Dislike Inequality B.Our Brains Prefer Having Less
C.Our Brains Respond Strongly to Money D.Our Brains Respond Differently to Money

Many weight loss programs seem attractive to people who are just trying to lose weight.16.For most people who are overweight, the results are so minimal(微小的)that they will give up long before achieving any realistic results. You lose weight for a while, only to gain back more weight when you stop your weight loss program. This is because such programs are not natural, and that’s why the "failure rate" is over 98%. Isn’t there a natural weight loss solution? Well, the only way to lose weight naturally is the good old-fashioned way.17.
18.By reducing portion(一份)sizes, we can lose weight without changing the foods we eat. Try using a smaller plate, which will make portions look larger. When dining out, ask for a to-go(外卖)box before you start eating, and pack away half of your meal for later.
You can lose weight naturally by making sensible substitutions in your cooking and meal choices.19.For example, try substituting low-fat salad dressings; many taste just as good, if not better, than their hi-calorie cousins. When cooking, use fat-free cooking spray on your pans instead of butter or fat.
A sure way of achieving natural weight loss is to increase the amount of exercise you get every day. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean spending hours at the gym or in front of a weight loss video. Increase your exercise levels naturally by walking or biking short distances instead of driving, by taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or by washing your car by hand instead of running it through the automat. There are even exercises that you can do while sitting at your desk.20.
Actually only natural weight loss can be permanent. It may help to improve your overall fitness, and decrease your risk of falling victim to diseases caused by overweight.
A.It includes proper diet and frequent exercise.
B.Often times, we eat far more than we’d actually need.
C.However, they usually turn out to be practically useless.
D.Meanwhile, you can preserve flavor while enjoying weight loss.
E.As a result, you don’t need much exercise while trying to lose weight.
F.Eating too much unhealthy food is a common cause of gaining weight.
G.These activities can burn extra calories without taking up too much time.

根据上文“Well, the only way to lose weight naturally is the good old-fashioned way.”(自然减肥的唯一方法就是传统的方法。) A.It includes proper diet and frequent exercise.(它包括适当的饮食和经常锻炼。)中说的就是传统的减肥方法,it指代上文的“the good old-fashioned way”,故选A。
    18.
根据下文“By reducing portion(一份)sizes, we can lose weight without changing the foods we eat. Try using a smaller plate, which will make portions look larger.”(通过减少一份大小,我们可以减肥不改变我们所吃的食物。 B. Often times, we eat far more than we’d actually need.(很多时候,我们吃的比我们实际需要的多得多。)
    19.
根据上文“You can lose weight naturally by making sensible substitutions in your cooking and meal choices.”(在烹饪和饮食选择上做出明智的选择,你就可以自然地减肥。) D. Meanwhile, you can preserve flavor while enjoying weight loss.(同时,你可以在享受减肥的同时保持味道。)
    20.
根据上文“There are even exercises that you can do while sitting at your desk.”(你甚至可以坐在办公桌前做一些运动。) G.These activities can burn extra calories without taking up too much time.(这些活动可以在不占用太多时间的情况下燃烧额外的卡路里。)

分析句子可知,空处需要填入代词it作句子的形式主语,真正的主语是to leave the Chinese university she had taught at for more than 19 years。故填it。
    42.
分析句子可知,空处需要填入spend的谓语动词形式,且根据句意,空处动作“much of their time not only studying the courses she taught, but also in her living room reading.”发生在“as she waved goodbye to the students”之前,为“过去的过去”,用过去完成时,即had spent。故填had spent。
    44.
not only……but also……
综上,填was provided。故填was provided。
    47.
分析句意可知,she always chose some more books that she thought would be good for her students和shipped them to her Chinese address为并列关系,所以空处需要填连词and。故填and。
    48.
分析句子可知,空处需要填入amaze的副词形式amazingly作状语,表示“令人惊讶的是”,修饰it had over 1,200 English publications before she left。故填amazingly。
    49.
故填when。
    50.
故填to maintain。

    4.去掉when

故all改为both。

故they改为he。
此处“he usually enjoys music with my mother”为主谓宾结构,不需要when。故去掉when。
故himself改为him。
故a改为the。
    52. My Favorite Chinese Idiom
My favorite Chinese idiom is shu neng sheng qiao, which means if you want to master a skill, you need to exercise a lot to achieve it. It equals the English proverb: Practice makes perfect.
The idiom is of paramount significance to me as it has been inspiring me to achieve great success. I used to get poor marks in math exams. It was my math teacher who told me “Practice makes perfect!” So I did a lot of practice and my math is getting better and better. Later I have always kept the proverb in mind and put it to use.
Such is my favorite Chinese idiom, a simple but powerful one.
