I experienced the Naadam Festival in China’s Inner Mnglia Autnmus Regin fr the first time this year. The festival falls n the furth day f the sixth mnth f the lunar calendar, usually lasting fr three days. Naadam means “games” in Mnglian, and it is represented by three events: hrse racing, wrestling, and archery, which are all s exciting t watch!
On the first day, I set ff t the games early with my friend Burin. I saw a lt f peple wearing fancy Mnglian rbes. Sme were feeding their hrses, sme were practicing archery, and thers were chatting r taking phtgraphs. Burin tld me that Mnglians travel every year frm near and far t attend the festival, just as their ancestrs had dne fr centuries.
After the pening ceremny and sme amazing perfrmances, the wrestling cmpetitin began. Mnglian wrestling is different frm wrestling in the Olympic Games. There are n runds, and wrestlers are nt separated by weight. The wrestler lses if any part f his bdy abve his knee tuches the grund. After singing sme sngs, the cmpetitrs danced nt the green field, waving their arms in the air as if they were eagles. I was quite mved by their shw f strength and grace.
I abslutely enjyed the archery, t, but the hrse races were my favurite part. Hwever, I was surprised t see that the riders were bys and girls! I heard it is because children are lighter and the hrses can run faster and farther. At first, I was a little wrried abut the children’s safety, but Burin said, “Dn’t wrry. They’ve been riding hrses all their lives. They’ll be just fine.” That was the mment I started t understand why peple say “Hrses are at the heart f Mnglian culture”. …
I’m finally back hme nw, feeling really tired, but celebrating Naadam with my friend was ttally wrth it. He invited me back fr the winter t stay in a traditinal Mnglian tent and eat ht pt. I can’t wait!

July 4, 2018Tday was my first furth f July celebratin, and I’ll always remember it because it was s wnderful. The furth f July is Independence Day in the US—the anniversary f the day the United States became its wn cuntry in 1776.

I began the day by packing my swimming suit and a twel. Then I went with my hst family t a supermarket t lad up n fd and drinks. After that we were ff t a friend’s ranch ut in the cuntry fr a barbecue and pl party.
It was s amazing! While the adults cked fd n the barbecue, we played in the pl. Then we all ate and ate until we were cmpletely stuffed. Our friends had sme ld ice cream churners, s after lunch we all tk turns churning hmemade ice cream. Since the temperature utside was arund 40 degrees, it seemed like the ice cream tk frever! I wuld turnthe handle n the churn until my arm was sre,
and then smene else wuld take ver. But it was all wrth it, because when we were finished it was the mst fantastic ice cream I have ever eaten! Then, smene asked me if I wuld like t try hrseback riding. I was afraid at first, but they gave me a very gentle hrse. It was s peaceful t ride the hrse thrugh the fields and frest. Finally, when it grew dark, we had a thrilling firewrks display.
Nw I’m back hme with my hst family. Thugh I’m tired, I think this had t be the mst exciting day f my life! I can’t wait fr next year!
