Closeness and independence are both important in our life. Though all humans need both of them, women tend to focus on the first and men on the second. It is as if their lifeblood ran in different directions.
These differences can give women and men different views of the same situation, as they did in the case of couple I will call Tracy and Brian. When Brian’s old high school friend called him at work and announced he’d be in town on business the following month, Brian invited him to stay for the weekend. That evening he informed Tracy that they were going to have a houseguest, and that he and his friend would go out together the first night to chat like old times. Tracy was upset. She was going to be away on business the week before, and the Friday night when Brian would be out with his friend would be her first night home. But what upset her the most was that Brian had made these plans on his own and informed her of them, rather than discussing them with her before extending the invitation.
Tracy would never make plans, for a weekend or an evening, without first checking with Brian. She can't understand why he doesn’t show her the same courtesy (礼貌) and consideration that she shows him. But when she protests, Brian says, “I can’t say to my friend, ‘I have to ask my wife for permission’!”
To Brian, checking with his wife means seeking permission, which implies that he is not independent, not free to act on his own. To Tracy, checking with her husband makes her feel good to know and show that she is involved with someone, that her life is bound up with someone else's.
Tracy and Brian both felt upset by this incident because it cut to the core of their primary concerns. Tracy was hurt because she sensed a failure of closeness in their relationship: He didn’t care about her as much as she cared about him. And he was hurt because he felt she was trying to control him and limit his freedom.
24.What is the primary purpose of the author in writing this passage?
A.To educate the reader on how to maintain good family relationships.
B.To tell the reader how to make close connections with other people.
C.To suggest the best way of dealing with family conflicts (冲突).
D.To explain the difference in communication styles between men and women.
    25.Tracy was used because_____________.
    A.she didn’t know Brian’s friend
B.she was too busy to meet Brian's friend
C.Brian didn’t care about her and hurt her deeply
D.Brian didn’t consulter her before inviting his friends home
26.What would Tracy most probably do if she plans to buy something expensive?
    A.She would discuss with Brian.
B.She would simply decide on her own.
C.She would ask her friends for advice.
D.She would buy Brian something expensive first.
27.According to the passage, compared with men, women tend to__________.
    A.be more emotional
    B.be easier to get hurt
    C.stress more on sharing
    D.stress more on independence
    C
In the U. S., speaking more than one language fluently is not very common except in Los Angeles, California.
The city has one of the largest population in the U. S. of young people between the ages of 18 and 34. This generation is often called millennials (新千年一代). More than half of millennials in Los Angeles are bilingual (双语的), which means they speak more than one language.

She says being bilingual will give them more opportunities in the future. Knowing Spanish also means the children can talk with their relatives in Mexico.
“When we had our children, one of the decisions we as parents made was to name them with a name that was easily pronounced in English and Spanish.”
Elizabeth wants to know her family’s culture.” “The culture-to go back to our roots because that’s part of who we are.”
Monica wants to pass on the culture to her children.
“It’s nice to know our culture and then to be able to pass it onto our children and grand- children and everyone to let them know where we come from.”
And, Monica says she does not speak only English and Spanish. She has even learned some Korean in school.

B.Talking with her children in Spanish.
C.Talking with her relatives in Spanish.
D.Forcing her children to speak Spanish.
29.What can be inferred from Monica’s words?
A.She doesn’t care where she comes from.
B.She looks forward to learning Spanish.
C.Everyone should know his own culture.
    D.She doesn’t like American culture.
30.Which of the following is mentioned about children speaking more languages?
A.It can give children more chances in the future.
B.It can make children feel proud before their friends.
C.It can give the children a chance to go to a good college.
D.It can let children go to the places where they want to go.
31.What’s the main purpose of this passage?
A.To entertain the readers with a funny story.
B.To inform the readers of a shocking experiment result.
C.To encourage more persons to learn a second language.
D.To tell a truth that many people in Los Angeles are bilingual.
    D
It may seem as if Mother's Day was invented by a company named Hallmark,   but   people have been taking time on the calendar to give a shout-out to Mom for a long time. The Greeks and Romans had mother goddess festivals — although their celebrations didn't involve the menfolk taking their underappreciated mothers out to dinner. A more recent tradition was   Mothering Sunday, which developed in the British Isles during the 16th century. On the fourth Sunday in April, young men and women who were living and working apart from their families were advised to return to their mothers’ houses.
Mother's Day as it is observed in the United States started in the 1850s with Ann Jarvis, a West Virginia woman who held “Mothers' Work Days” to promote health and hygiene(卫生 ) at home and in the workplace. During the Civil War, Jarvis organized women to improve sanitary conditions for soldiers on both sides, and after the war she became a peacemaker, furthering the cause by bringing together mothers of Union and Confederate                    soldiers and promoting a Mother's Day holiday.
Jarvis's work inspired another 19th-century woman, Julia Ward Howe. In 1870 Howe published her “Mother's Day Proclamation”, which envisioned(设想) the day not as appreciation of mothers by their children but as an opportunity for women to exercise their collective power for peace. Howe started holding annual Mother's Day celebrations in Boston, her hometown, but after about a decade she stopped footing the bill and the tradition faded away.
It was Jarvis's daughter Anna who succeeded in getting Mother’s Day recognized as a national holiday. After her mother died, in May 1905, Anna started holding yearly ceremony on   the anniversary and conducting a tireless PR campaign to have the day made a holiday. In 1908   she succeeded in enlisting the support of John Wanamaker, the Philadelphia department store magnate and advertising pioneer, and by 1912 West Virginia and a few other states had adopted Mother's Day. Two years later, President Woodrow Wilson signed a resolution   declaring   the second Sunday in May a national holiday.
It wasn't long, though, before whatever ideals the day was supposed to celebrate were buried under an amount of greeting cards and candy. By the 1920s Anna Jarvis was campaigning against the holiday she had been instrumental in creating. “I wanted it to be a day of emotionalism, not profit,” she said.
32.It can be inferred from the first paragraph that .
A.mothers didn't get enough appreciation in the past
B.Mother's Day was invented by Hallmark
C.young people all returned to their mothers' houses
D.Greeks and Romans were the first to celebrate Mother's Day
33.Who plays the most significant role in creating Mother's Day?
    A.Ann Jarvis. B.Julia Ward Howe.
    C.Woodrow Wilson. D.Anna Jarvis.
34.Why did Anna Jarvis go against celebrating Mother's Day in the 1920s?
    A.Because it was extremely emotional.
B.Because the festival was not profitable.
C.Because the celebrations went against the original spirit.
D.Because the day was celebrated in the form of exchanging greeting cards and candy.
35.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
    A.The Definition of Mother’s Day
B.The Argument on Celebrating Mother's Day
C.The Story Behind the Creation of Mother's Day
D.Different Forms of Celebration on Mother's Day

It took place in a teacher’s family. One day, Ben was playing basketball in the living room after school, when he accidentally threw the ball at a vase sitting on the shelf. The vase dropped to the floor and a large piece broke off. What made Ben more upset was that the vase was not a common decoration but an antique, which was handed down through generations from the 18th century. It was also his mother's favourite possession. To cover his terrible action, the terrified boy glued the pieces together hastily and put the vase back to its place.
As the mother herself dusted the vase every day, she naturally noticed the cracks(裂纹) that evening. To her surprise, the repair work was actually very good. At dinner time, she asked her boy if he broke the vase. Fearing punishment, the suddenly inspired boy said that a neighbour’s cat jumped in from the window and he couldn’t drive it away no matter how hard he tried. It raced around the living room and finally knocked the vase off its shelf. His mother was quite clear that her son was lying, for all the windows were closed before she left for work each morning and opened after she returned. However, in the face of her son’s nervous eyes and the suspicious looks of the other family members. Ben’s mother remained calm. She realized she shouldn’t just simply blame and punish her son for lying. She came up with another idea.
Before going to bed, the boy found a note from his mother in his room, asking him to go to the study at once. The boy thought he would now be punished but, as he had already lied, he was determined to deny everything to the end, no matter how angry his mum became.
In the study, calmly bathed in the light, his mothers face showed no sign of anger. On seeing her son push open the door and cautiously enter, she took a chocolate box out of a drawer and gave him one.
    注意:
    1.续写词数应为150左右
The mother said, "This chocolate is a reward for your imagination: a window-opening cat!”

    Dear Robin,
How is everything going? Thank you for congratulating me on my entering high school in your last letter.
I can’t wait to share my senior high life with you. I have made several new friends, and my new teachers here are all professional, helpful and kind to us. Moreover, there are various school activities for us students to take part in every term. I believe I will spend a wonderful time in the next three years. Would you like to share something about your senior high with me?
Looking forward to hearing from you.
    Yours,
    Li Hua
The mother said,“This chocolate is a reward for your imagination -- a window-opening cat!” Hearing her sincere appreciation, Ben flushed, lowered his head and muttered a thank-you. Surprisingly, the mother took out another chocolate and pressed it into his hand.“This one is for the delicate repair work you did to the broken vase.”She also added that she was moved by how much the boy cherished the family possessions. At these hearty remarks, Ben felt a flow of shame through his veins, and had to duck his head even lower. The mother then calmly encouraged Ben to reward himself more chocolate for any other merits he had displayed in this event. He did as was told to, confessing that he was calm when facing the accident.

Now with some chocolate in hand, the boy’s bad attitude disappeared. His palm and forehead sweating, nervousness welled up inside him. After what seemed a long time, he looked up at his mother, admitted that it was not the cat but he that had broken the vase accidentally and asked for punishment.“I’m sorry I lied to you, mum. Please take back the chocolate.” Feeling so ashamed, Ben couldn’t hold back his tears. He opened his palm wide, ready to return the chocolate. To his surprise, however, his mother placed the whole bag of chocolate in his hand, smiling. “Honesty deserves the best reward, my dear.”
