Welcome to Dunhuang, a place with more than 2,000 years of history! On the old Silk Road, this city was the gateway to and from Ancient China, and a green island in the middle of the desert.
Dunhuang’s long history shows it is the center of culture and business. Today, Dunhuang is a world-class tourist site with more than 700 caves. Now we are going to enter some ancient caves known as the Mogao Grottoes? These caves were carved out of the rock. Now look around the walls of the cave! You can see elements from Ancient Greece, India and Iran.

Think about what you like to wear on the weekend. There is a good chance that you like to put on a pair of blue jeans. At any moment, about half of the world’s population is wearing jeans. But according to a new study, our love for jeans may be bad for Earth. Denim (牛仔布) might be putting some sea animals in danger.
You might wonder: Isn’t denim made of cotton, a natural material? How can it become a danger to nature? Well, in the process of making jeans, cotton is treated with many types of man-made chemicals. Some improve the durability (耐用性) and feel; others give jeans their blue color. Every time we wash our jeans, tiny bits of denim come loose. They flow out of our washing machines, down the drain and into the world’s rivers, lakes and oceans.
Scientists studied the Great Lakes in America and the Arctic Ocean in northern Canada. They found denim waste in all of the water they had collected. It is terrible that the harmful chemicals in denim have spread far and wide. Scientists aren’t yet sure how these chemicals might harm animals.
In the study, the scientists also washed jeans to see how many bis of denim on average each pair would drop per wash. The answer was surprising: About 50,000. Not all of them make their way into the environment. Wastewater treatment plants (污水处理厂) hold back 83 to 99 percent of them. This may sound pretty good. However, one percent of 50,000 bits are still 500 per wash. Now think about the number of jeans around the world and the times each of them gets washed. As a result, a large amount of denim waste still gets into the environment.
Does this mean we shouldn’t wear jeans? Probably not, “We need to buy fewer clothes and only wash them when we truly need to do it,” says Sam Athey, one of the scientists. “You don’t need to wash your jeans after having worn them only a couple of times.”
    19. According to the article, denim might be bad for nature because ______.
    A. it is made of man-made cotton B. it is difficult to be washed clean
    C. it comes from a natural material D. it is treated with many chemicals
    20. The underlined word “They” in Paragraph 2 refers to “______”.
    A. natural materials B. some sea animals
    C. tiny bits of denim D. man-made chemicals
    21. Sam Athey suggests ______.
    A. that we should not wear jeans B. washing jeans when necessary
    C. we buy jeans as many as possible D. we wash jeans after wearing them

School Gardens Could Help Children Try More Vegetables
It’s not always enjoyable for children to eat vegetables. But what if a garden is built in the school? New research suggests that a gardening program in schools can increase children’s vegetable intake (摄入量).
How the Study Was Carried Out
The study was carried out in eight schools. Each school was in the gardening program for one school year. Every child in grades 3-5 received а total of eighteen 60-minute lessons across the school year. In the program, each school built a garden, where children learned to grow their own fresh produce, like fruit and vegetables.
    The Benefits Children Could Get
The study found that vegetable intake increased greatly across the year as the children grew their own fruit and vegetables. Related studies show that increased vegetable intake can improve health and cut the risk of chronic(慢性) diseases. There are not only benefits to health, children may also make mealtimes much easier. “Children who are often exposed (接触) to а variety of vegetables are more likely to try new foods,” explains Dr. Kerry Jones. For children, growing their own food is a powerful tool to increase their intake of the food.
    ____19____
Any opportunity to expose children to more vegetables is meaningful. “If children are learning about vegetables at school, it’s important to encourage this interest.” says Jones. Parents can listen to their children about what they have learned and read the handouts they bring home from school. Parents and children can also read books together. Younger children can enjoy reading stories about vegetables with parents who offer useful message. Older children may enjoy searching through cook books with parents to find new dinner ideas to cook vegetables in а tasty way. In addition, а small planter box in a sunny part at home can encourage children to understand more about where their food comes from.
Teaching children to grow their own produce is a great way to increase their preference for the produce. If children are taught to enjoy vegetables early in life, they will probably continue eating vegetables in the long term.
    19. What did children do in the gardening program?
    A. They did research on new plants. B. They grew fresh produce at school.
C They took home green vegetables D. They built gardens for their classes.
    20. Which of the following would be the best heading for Paragraph 4?
    A. Reasons for Parents to Understand Children
    B. Ideas to Encourage Children to Cook at Home
    C. Ways to Expose Children to Vegetables at Home
    D. Suggestions That Children Could Get from Parents
    21. What can we learn from the program?
    A. Parents’ support might improve children’s reading.
    B. School program could develop students’ creativity.
    C. Doing studies can prepare students for future learning.
    D. Hands-on experience may influence children’s preference.

There’s a small brick (砖) house I visit from time to time. It’s not the house that is special, but the person who lives inside.
I met Miss Clark about 45 years ago when she was my sister’s kindergarten teacher. I remember looking into her classroom wishing I was her student. My parents told me I could start school when I was 4. However, when I turned 4 in the spring, I couldn’t understand why I had to wait until September. Anyway, I was finally in Miss Clark’s class—Room 3. She always created a safe place where we could be whatever we wanted to be at that moment.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to be a teacher. When I graduated, I couldn’t wait to invite Miss Clark to my classroom. She arrived one day, and I saw joy on my students’ faces singing the same songs I sang with her as a child. As a new teacher, I was surprised at how she connected with children. For years, Miss Clark volunteered in my classroom.
Over the years we have shared in each other’s ups and downs. She asked me for updates about my family and friends, and she tells me about hers.
I am here for her now as the time to sell her house is near. I bring up boxes from her basement (地下室). We go through every painting a student has given her, every thank-you note a parent has written and her teaching aids.
On the papers of the letters, I find my own name printed in green marker. Suddenly my mind goes back to Room 3. Over 40 years ago, Miss Clark sat on a chair while my classmates and I sat at her feet. We learned about the letters and their sounds. Now, Miss Clark sits on her rocking chair, and I sit at her feet. We talk for hours. I listen carefully because I know I still have more to learn from her.
Our friendship is one that neither of us expected.
Educators know teaching is a job for the development of each young student. The lucky ones get to see what their students have done with their lives. The excellent ones never leave their students’ hearts.
    34. Why does the writer visit the small brick house from time to time?
    A. Because the house is special.
    B. Because her teacher lives there.
    C. Because she wants to buy the house.
    D. Because she has classes for her students there.

Today, we’ll be talking about several of the biggest shopping events and a little bit about their history.
    Boxing Day

Boxing Day is the day after Christmas, and it is one of the biggest shopping events in the West. But it doesn’t have anything to do with the sport, boxing. This one gets its name from a tradition in the 1800s when the rich would box gifts to give to the poor. Nowadays, it’s a day to accept sales eagerly on winter clothing, toys and seasonal items. But sales aren’t what they used to be, so most people prefer Black Friday.
    Black Friday

This one dates back to the 1950s and falls on the Friday after Thanksgiving. Originally, it started as an instore event: a group of shoppers created traffic accidents and even violence, but now it’s the busiest shopping day of the year, because it kicks off the holiday season. Most things go on sale for this one, making it the perfect time to start your shopping before Christmas. Some stores open as early as 5 a.m. on this day, and eager customers camp out for days in the cold waiting to be the first to get those bargains which can be bought a lot less than the usual price. Competition can get pretty crazy on Black Friday, and some people have been injured in the rush. But things are a lot calmer now as more stores are offering sales for a full week.
    Cyber Monday

Cyber Monday is the Monday after Black Friday, and it’s only for online sales. It began in 2005 when online sellers wanted to exchange cash on the success of Black Friday’s “brick-and-mortar” sales. At the time, Cyber Monday wasn’t the busiest online shopping day of the year — it was more like the 12th — but it has become a very popular day to shop since then. Nowadays, sales tend to be on big-ticket items like TVs, computers and other tech products.

    26. How many shopping events were mentioned in the passage?
    A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four.
    27. ________ comes the earliest in a year.
    A. Black Friday B. Christmas Day C. Boxing Day D. Cyber Monday
    28. Which of the following statements about the events is TRUE?
    A. Boxing Day gets its name from the sport boxing.
    B. You can get a lot of things for sale on Black Friday.
    C. Cyber Day is the most popular shopping event mentioned.
    D. Some customers even camp in the store to get things for sale.
    B

Have you tasted one snack as well as the traditional Chinese form of art known as sugar painting?
Sugar painting can be found in southeastern areas of China, but is especially found around Sichuan Province along the streets or in the parks. Sugar painting could date back to the Ming Dynasty when sugar animals and figures were made in molds. In the Qing Dynasty, sugar painting gained more popularity. At that time, many people made a living by sugar painting.
The artists normally sit before a shining marble in the front. On the side there is a wooden plate with a movable bamboo arrow on it. The plate is painted with various patterns in a circle such as a dragon, bird, dog, flower basket and so on. After paying, the customers, normally kids, turn the arrow and wait till it stops. The pattern pointed by the arrow is the one the artist is supposed to make with sugar.
There are two main types: plane painting and solid painting. For the plane painting (which is the easier one), the painter uses the brown sugar or white sugar as the basic material, the spoon and a shovel as the tool, and the marble as the “paper”. To get syrup, the artist has to cook the sugar in a pot before painting. Since the hot liquid sugar could freeze hard if it cools, the artist has to produce his work very quickly.
Using a small spoon to hold the syrup which looks like silk and thread, the painter concentrates his strength on the wrist and takes the spoon as a brush pen, rising and pausing, up and down, left and right. Soon a sugar painting of an animal, flower or a bike is finished, and the painter separates the painting from the marble with a shovel, puts a bamboo slice on the painting or wraps it with a plastic bag.
Nowadays, sugar painting has already been listed as National Non-Material Culture Heritage.

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is an annual event in New York by the department store. Macy’s. It is the world’s largest and second oldest parade. The event is held in Manhattan from 9:00 a.m. to noon on Thanksgiving Day.
In 1924, Macy’s store workers marched to their store in Herald Square, dressing as cowboys, clowns and knights. They went from 145th Street to the store, making a 6-mile route. There were floats, bands and 25 live animals borrowed from the zoo. With an audience of over 250,000 people, the parade was such a success that Macy’s decided to hold it every year.
Four years later, balloons replaced the live animals. Over the years, they have become a key feature of the parade. These six-storey-tall balloons are modeled after pop cartoon and culture characters, such as Mickey Mouse, Snoopy and Spider-Man. Another key part of the parade is floats with famous people and musicians. The most famous float, Tom Turkey, was introduced in 1973 and became the parade’s mascot. It generally leads the parade as the first float. In the parade, there are also college bands, singers, dancers and performers. The last person to appear is Santa Claus, who ends the event by arriving into Herald Square to ring in the Christmas season.
The route has been changed three times. The latest one was made in 2009. It starts at the corner of 77th Street and travels south to Columbus Circle, where it turns east onto Central Park South before turning on to 6th Avenue. After traveling down 6th Avenue to 34th Street, the parade turns right and ends at Macy’s in Herald Square.
The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is a true New York experience and attracts over 2.5 million people every year.

    Before doing tests
•Prepare well for tests. You need to do homework all the time. You are supposed to make your body ready. And you’d better wear comfortable clothes so as to feel at ease about the test.

This is a song millions of Americans hear on New Year’s Eve. This is a song we hear in some classic movies like The Gold Rush (1925), Waterloo Bridge (1931) and It’s a Wonderful Life (1946). This is a song that has different versions around the world. It is called Auld Lang Syne.
Actually, Auld Lang Syne is an old Scottish poem. No one knows who wrote the poem first. However, a version by Scottish poet Robert Burns was published in 1796. The title Auld Lang Syne is believed to be an old Scottish way of saying “a long time ago”. The opening lines of the song “Should auld acquaintance be forgotten, and never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgotten, and auld long syne?” mean we should have a drink in honor of whatever is passing, and remember old friends. In Scotland, on New Year’s Eve it’s a tradition to play the song with its national instrument called bagpipe to welcome the new year. Bagpipe makes special sound and it has a special look, with a bag at the bottom and one or several pipes*connected to the bag. And the bagpiper, who plays this instrument, is required to wear Scottish traditional clothes kilts.
When the Scots moved to America in the 1800s, they brought the song with them. But the Canadian bandleader Guy Lombardo made it well-known to the public. In 1965, he explained to a reporter of Life Magazine how he connected the song with New Year’s Eve: “Auld Lang Syne is our theme song. We end every dance with it.”
