【教材分析】

This passage is taken from NSE 7B Module 11 Unit2 Here are some ways to welcome them. The topic of Module 11 is body language. The function is imperative sentence. The passage is mainly about the body language around the world. It introduces the different body language in different countries. The writer try to let students realize that the body language is a part of culture. The structure of the passage is general dividing. In the passage, the writer use four aspects to explain the difference of the body language in these countries.

【学情分析】

Most students have already known some body language that we use in our daily life, but they know a litter about the body language in other countries.
Most students have learned some useful reading skills, such as predicting, skimming, scanning, words guessing and so on. However, they still find it difficult to apply the skills to their reading.

【教学目标】

Students will be able to understand the passage concerning body language and learn more about the differences in body language in different countries.
Students will be able to use correct body language when meeting foreigners.

【重点难点】

The teaching focus lies in understanding the body language of different countries. However, students may find it difficult to use these body language correctly because different countries have different body language, so it takes time to remember them.

Review& Leading in (5mins)	Step1: Review Ask students the body language they have learned in unit 1. T: Good morning, everyone. Before the class we watched a video . (show the national flags) T: Can you tell me how can we welcome others in these countries? Ss: ...... T: We know people will shake hands to welcome others in America. So, what do you think of it? (It’s _____ to shake hands to welcome others in America.) S1:... S2:... (polite) (Write the word on the blackboard, and let students read it twice.) T: Can we kiss in China? Ss: No. T: So we can’t do it all the time, because it’s ___ . S1:... S2:... (rude) (Write the word on the blackboard, and let students read it twice.) Step2: Leading in Tell the students that the school needs volunteers. T: Last month, some foreign friends came to our school. Here is a photo. And this photo shows the visit of our foreign friends. (Write “foreign” on the blackboard, and let students read it.) T: Next month, some foreign friends will come to our school again. And our school needs some volunteers. (Show the poster.) T: Read the poster by yourself. If you want to be the volunteer, what should you do? Ss: ...... T: Today we are going to learn a passage about body language.	A brief review can let students enter the class quickly and arouse students’ interest as well. The use of the photos can let the topic close to students’ daily life and make the leading in part more natural.
Reading (textbook) (15mins)	Step3: Pre-reading Find the title and the writer. T: Look at the passage, can you tell me the title? Ss: Body language around the world. T: Who is the writer? Ss:Wang Lingling. Step4: While-reading (passage one)  Read the passage and circle the countries. T: The title is Body language around the world. So the writer will write one country or some countries? Ss: Several countries. T: Now, please read the passage and circle the countries. (Ss tell the countries. T sticks the countries on the blackboard.)  Read the passage and underline the body language. T: Now, we know the countries. But can you find the body language in this passage? Please read the passage again and underline the body language. T: Who can tell me your answer? S1: Stand close to people. S2: Don’t stand too close. S3: Walk arm in arm S4: Don’t touch them. S5: Hold you arm when they talk to you. S6: Look at each other when they talk. S7: Don’t wave to say goodbye. (T sticks the body language on the blackboard.)  Match the body language with the country. T: Now please match the body language with the country on the blackboard. You can find a partner and discuss together. After discussing, student one should come to the front and do the match. Students two should answer some questions. (Each pair chooses two countries or areas to answer.) (Ss choose two countries by themselves and answer the questions of the countries) T: There is a country missing. Can you find it? Ss: Greece. T: Before we talk about Greece, I want to know how do we say goodbye in our daily life? S1:... S2:... ( Wave to say goodbye) (Write “wave” on the blackboard.) T: Can we do this in Greece? Ss: No. T: Why? S1:... S2:... ...  Think about the reason that the writer write this passage. T: Now we know something about the passage. So why does Wang Lingling write this passage? S1:... S2:... ... T: Yes, and I think maybe she wants to tell us that people will do different things in different countries.	This part is about the passage in the textbook. Instead of explaining the paragraphs one by one, I want to let students learn the passage as a whole. And I design some activities to let the learning process be more interesting.
Reading (extended reading) (10mins)	Step5: While-reading (passage two)  Read the passage and answer the questions. T: In order to let you understand this sentence better, I prepare another passage. Please take out the reading material, and tell me the title of this passage. Ss: Body language. T: Good. Now please read the passage and answer these two questions. 1.People use the body language to ________ . 2.What countries can you find in the passage? S1: People use the body language to send messages. S2/3/...: Russia, France, Arab countries, China, Australia, Asian countries.  Read the passage again and underline the body language in these countries. T: Now we know the countries, and next please read the passage again and underline the body language in these countries. S1: In Russia, France and Arab countries, people will kiss each other when they meet. S2: In China and Australia, people will shake hands. S3: In Arab countries, people will stand close to others when they are talking. S4: In Arab countries, people will use the fingers of the right hand to eat. S5: In Asian countries, people will not touch the head of other people. S6: In Asian countries, people will not sit with the feet pointing at other people.  What can we do when we meet a foreign friend after class? T: After class, if you meet a foreign friend, what will you do? S1:... S2:... ... T: your ideas are very good. And I think we also need to be polite and show our respect.	This part is about the extended reading. I choose a passage which is similar to our text. By reading and understanding this material, students can learn more about the body language around the world. And this information can help them do the group work.
After-reading (10 mins)	Step6: Group work Work in a group, write down the information and give a speech.  Each group: choose one leader and write down his/her information.  Each member: choose one country and write down the body language.  Group leader: give a speech according to (根据) the information.	The purpose of the group work is to let students use what they have learned in this class. Each member should choose one country and write down the body language in this country. Through this process T can check students’ master degree. After that, the group leader should give a speech according to the information. And this is related to the volunteer wanted at the beginning of the class.
