Frm the mment we wake up and check the messages n ur smartphnes, we’re expsed t text design. In his hmetwn, signs written in traditinal Chinese characters can be fund arund every crner. One calligraphy style, abve all, has cme t represent Hng Kng fr Chan: Beiwei Kaishu, a dynamic way f writing that has its rigins in 4th-century China. After Wrld War I II, Beiwei Kaishu was used in Hng Kng signs, partly because it is highly legible, even frm far distances. What sets Beiwei Kaishu apart frm ther Chinese writing styles is its unique cnstructin, striking lines and unexpected angles, says Chan.
But with the appearance f cmputer-generated typefaces and LED signs, Chan says he bserved that signs written in the style were disappearing frm Hng Kng. As a cnsequence, few designers wrking tday are aware f the Beiwei Kaishu style, he says.
In 2016,Chan asked Wng Gk Lnga master f calligraphy in Hng Kng, t teach him t write in the Beiwei Kaishu style. Chan then started the prcess f digitizing the characters. He first wrte the characters n paper with a brush and ink, which gave him a sense f prprtin. Next,he made a pencil sketch(素描).Finally,he recreated the characters digitally, using a cmputer prgram called Glyphs.
He has named his typeface Beiwei Zansyu and hpes it will eventually appear n phnes and cmputers. “Chan’s effrt is mere than missing bygne eras-it's reinterpreting and cntinuing ur heritage(产)ins mre cntemprary life,"says Keith Tam,head f cmmunicatin design at the Hng Kng Design Institute.

Fr instance, Oxfrd University Press launched Oxfrd Glbal Languages a few years ag. It is an initiative that bsts “digitally underrepresented" languages. They are fcused n prmting languages that might have clse t a millin speakers wrldwide, yet have little r n nline presence. Therefre, they have been creating digital dictinaries as a fundamental building blck t help preserve them.
There have been cuntless ther prjects like this with the same aim. Anther is the Rsetta Prject, which aims t create a handheld digital library that will carry mre than 1,500 languages. It will be apprpriately sized t fit nicely int ur hands, and will cme with arund 13,000 pages f infrmatin. It will als have a high life expectancy f anywhere between 2,000 and 10,000 years. Initiatives like these have as their primary bjective t ensure the preservatin f lcal languages lng after their speakers have died.

In an ffice building f Helsinki, Finland, a scial wrker is meeting six elderly peple fr lunch-via tablets prpped n their kitchen tables. While many cuntries with grwing elderly ppulatins are building new care hmes, Finland is lking after peple in their wn hmes-by means f technlgy.
The mst cmmn reasn fr a hme visit by a scial wrker is t check that Grandma is taking her medicine. A pill-dispensing(配药的)rbt in her hme can d that. Each hlds a tw-week supply f multiple drugs, gives a reminder when it is time t take them and dispenses the right cmbinatin. Fr ne in five peple wh try them the rbts dn't wrk, usually because Grandma is reluctant t take lts f pills. But fr the rest, they have cut medicatin-related visits frm 30 t just fur a mnth.
The idea f ld flk living alne perhaps wrries Finnish peple less than many thers; Finns pride themselves n their rugged self-reliance. A welcme pack fr freign jurnalists includes a bk f cartns depicting “Finnish nightmares”, such as having t say “hell" t a neighbur. Scial islatin, hwever, is a big prblem fr the elderly because it leads t faster cgnitive and physical decline. T deal with that, Helsinki runs virtual get-tgethers fr its hmebund elderly. These shuld be regarded as extras, thugh. A degree f persnal interactin, nt just the virtual kind, is surely necessary even fr Finns.
The biggest challenge fr bth humans and devices is t spt prblems early. Lcal tech cmpanies, including MariCare Oy and Benete, have develped systems t gather data n things like hw ften a persn visits the bathrm r pens the fridge. Care wrkers use such data t priritise whm t visit and what t check fr. Nt pening the fridge as ften, fr example, is a hint that memry prblems may be getting wrse.
The biggest gain frm technlgy may be that it makes it easier t keep ld peple fit enugh t remain in their wn hmes. This is much cheaper, and usually nicer, t.

C. It ensures the dctrs give the right cmbinatin f pills.
D. It saves scial wrkers the truble f frequent hme visits
34.What might the authr suggest the Finns d?

B.Stick t their traditin f self-reliance.
C.Run as many virtual get-tgethers as pssible.
