Nature calms ur stressed-ut sul. Nature is the best medicine, but new research is shwing what little time we need t set aside t harvest the benefits.

“We knw that spending time in nature reduces stress, but until nw it is unclear hw much is enugh, hw ften t d it, r even what kind f nature experience will benefit us,” says lead authr Mary Carl Hunter in a statement. “Our study shws that fr the greatest pay-ff, in terms f efficiently lwering levels f the stress hrmne crtisne (压力荷尔蒙激素), yu shuld spend 20 t 30 minutes sitting r walking in a place that prvides yu with a sense f nature.”

The data shwed that just a 20-minute nature experience was enugh t significantly reduce crtisne levels. The effect was mre efficient between 20 and 30 minutes, after which benefits cntinued t increase but at a slwer rate.
That fits in with the findings f anther recent study, which fund that spending 20 minutes in an urban park culd make yu happier, n matter whether yu use that time t exercise.
Fr this study, 94 adults visited 3 urban parks in Muntain Brk, Alabama, cmpleting a questinnaire abut their subjective well-being befre and after their visit. An accelermeter (加速度计) tracked their physical activity.
A visit lasting 20 t 25 minutes shwed the best results, with a rughly 64% increase in the participants’ self-reprted well-being, even if they didn’t mve a great deal in the park. That last pint is particularly psitive, since it means anyne can benefit frm visiting a nearby park, whatever his r her age r physical ability.
“There is increasing pressure n green space within urban settings,” said a UAB prfessr Gavin Jenkins. “Planners and develpers lk t replace green space with residential (住宅的) and cmmercial prperty. The challenge faced by cities is that there is increasing evidence abut the value f city parks but we cntinue t see the disappearance f these spaces.”
