At 2:30 on December 5, 1945, five US Navy training planes took off in clear weather from the base Lauderdale, Florida. The planes flew east over the coast... and disappeared. The group was Flight 19, on a run between Florida and Bahamas. Tailor was the group leader. At about 3: 40, Tailor reported that his compasses were not reading properly. The other planes followed their leaders aimlessly, first east, then west, then northeast over the ocean, as Tailor tried to make sure of the direction by radio. Then, suddenly Tailor was heard to give orders to dive...
Quickly, two giant Martin seaplanes were sent up to search for Flight 19. Several hours later, the wind became strong and visibility(能见度) dropped. A return to base was ordered. But only one of the Martin seaplanes landed. Four days later, the Navy and Coast Guard combed a 100,000 square miles area with more than 100 planes and ships. No sign was ever shown of the missing planes.
Today, people have noted the disappearance of many ships and planes in the southwest part of the North Atlantic and began to call this area the Bermuda Triangle(百慕大三角区).
The points of the triangle are Bermuda, Puerto Rico and a spot in the Gulf of Mexico, west of Florida. It is a two-faced water world of tiny islands, bright beaches and beautiful waters. Yet thick fogs, powerful currents (激流) and sudden storms are hidden behind this smiling surface.
21.Why did Flight 19 disappear?
A.Because the wind became strong and visibility dropped.
B.Because Tailor was given wrong orders to dive.
C.Because Tailor couldn't read his compasses correctly.

23.Which of the following shows the correct position of the Bermuda Triangle?(F=Florida, Bm=Bermuda, PR=Puerto Rico, Bh=Bahamas, MG=the Gulf of Mexico, Atl=the Atlantic Ocean, B=Base)

The sun is setting on a summer night. At the entrance to a deep, dark cave, a few bats fly out. Then more and more of the small, furry creatures appear. Within a few minutes,a whole river of bats are pouring out of the cave, and they keep coming millions and millions of them.
Sound like a scary horror movie? Believe it or not, this scene takes place every night, all summer long, at Bracken Cave in Texas, where 20 million bats fly outside to feed on insects.
Every March or April, Mexican freetailed bats migrate up to 1609 kilometers from their winter home places, like mines, tunnels, hollow trees, and under bridges in Mexico to this cave. Soon after they arrive, each mother gives birth to one baby bat. As many as 500 baby bats live crammed (挤)into one square foot of space, and those bodies create nice warm temperatures to keep them warm and comfortable. With bad sight, how can mother bats recognize their own babies? Their good sense of smell helps them the most.
When the adult bats leave the cave at night to feed, they eat tons of insects in a single night, including many pests that eat farmers' crops. And they get rid of mosquitoes, too.
The cave, quiet in winter, is full of life all summer. The floor of the cave is covered with bugs. Gnats(蚊子) are flying around, and beetles are crawling up your leg when you walk in!
When twenty million bats fly out of one cave opening, they make a column (柱) so thick that they show up on the radar at the nearby airport. So much for bats being scary!
25.What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A.To explain the living habits of bats.
B.To describe what bats look like.

A.To escape from the cold of Mexico.
B.To give birth and raise their young.
C.To gather plenty of food for winter.
D.To help farmers in Texas kill harmful insects.
根据第三段第二句话的“Soon after they arrive, each mother gives birth to one baby bat.”
27.Which of the following senses helps mother bats recognize their babies?
A.Touch. B.Sight.
C.Smell. D.Taste.
根据第三段的末句“Their good sense of smell helps them the most.”

A.the bats living in the cave benefit the local farmers
B.Mexican free-tailed bats prevent other animals living in the cave
C.the large group of Mexican bats sometimes destroy the local radar
D.caves are the places where Mexican bats live all the year round

When I was seven years old, my mom was diagnosed with cancer. For this type of cancer the survival rate is low. My family was devastated. I had no idea that every day with my mom had to he the absolute best because we didn't know if it would be our last. I didn't understand why everyone was suddenly taking time out of their busy lives to come over and sit on our couch.
The doctors told us my mom might survive with surgery. But it could also kill her. She agreed to have it. The surgery was scheduled for the day after Columbus Day. The day before the surgery I was off school, and my mom planned the best day of my life, everything I loved at seven. The day began with her waking me up saying, “Kate, I have a surprice for you. Come and see.” The surprise was a doll I had wanted for the longest time and a locket. Throughout the day, she told me everything that she thought I would need to know to grow up and be a good person; she told me to the best I could be and that I would always make her proud. The day was filled with laughter. For the first time in a long time I could see she was happy. Really happy.
The day passed and it was time for the surgery. There were no tears; I think I understood that I could lose my mom, because they did tell me she could die. We waited all day for news from the doctor. Everyone jumped when a door opened or anyone walked into the waiting room. Finally the doctor came in, and the news was what we had prayed for.
The experience that my family went through was truly a roller_coaster. I will never forget that day together, and how her illness pulled our family closer. I understand now how lucky we were. I truly appreciate life and honour my mom for being so strong.

D
The key to happiness is within you. One of the first things you need to do is to truly love and accept yourself. You have to accept that you are not, and will never be, perfect.
Happiness comes also from satisfaction. When you finally accept the way things are, and are satisfied with everything else you have, you will realise that you have a lot of good things going for you.
You must also realise that you will not always succeed in everything you attempt. If you never lost anything, what would be the point of life? Failure is necessary to life, almost as necessary as the air we breathe. Though you do not always get what you want, it does not mean that you can not be happy.
Look at life as if it is one large scoreboard. Every time you take a good step forward in life, you will be earning yourself points. Even if at the end of the day, you only earned one or two points, you would feel better than if you lost a point or two. You'll know that it's worth your effort.
Happiness cannot be based purely on material possessions. Having the best car, greatest award, nicest house, or most money will not truly make you happy. It may seem that those people are happy on the outside, but material possessions can only make you so happy. They are a quick fix to fill an empty part of their life, but what they will need is another quick fix. Finally, they will become the worst type of unhappiness, the_people_with_everything,_and_nothing. If you look at everything in a positive light, you are more likely to be a happy person.
33.What does the underlined part in the last paragraph mean?
A.Those with material possessions feel empty inside.
B.Those with material possessions will lose them all one day.
C.The rich need to value their wealth or they'll be poor.
D.Nothing can make the rich happy though they have everything.
34.Which of the following may the author regard as the most important thing to happiness?
A.Good connections.
B.Nice educational experiences.
C.Positive attitude.
D.Rich general knowledge.
35.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.How Can We Fill the Empty Side of Ourselves?
B.How Should We Treat Material Possessions?
C.How Can We Succeed in Life?
D.How Can We Find Happiness Within?

How to develop a sense of responsibility
Boys and girls,
May I have your attention, please? Now, I'll give a speech.
It is important for us to develop a sense of responsibility because one day we will have to live and work independently. We have to take responsibility for whatever we do.
However, some of us lack a sense of responsibility because they think they are still young and they don't have to take care of themselves. They always depend on parents for everything they need.
To develop a sense of responsibility, we should form the habit of sharing housework with our parents. For example, we should wash the dishes after dinner and wash our own clothes. Besides, we should learn to cooperate with others, knowing how to do our duty and complete the task as planned. We will have to face the consequences if we make mistakes.
That's all. Thank you.
