    When we had finished ur supper, Old Mali gt nt his bed and lay dwn. It was nw cmpletely dark. In the fire light, Old Mali seemed t be fast asleep n his bed. I suddenly felt alne and afraid.
    All day in the jungle, while we had been walking, I had heard nises f animals. Nw they seemed t be much nearer. The jungle was nw a wall f blackness in the light f the fire.
    I felt frightened and suddenly my muth went dry. I wanted t scream. I felt my muth pening wide, ready t scream as lud as pssible.
    But I did nt scream. I saw Old Mali's face in the firelight. This made me feel ashamed. I held my teeth tightly tgether t stp myself frm screaming. I lay dwn and clsed my eyes.
    As sn as I clsed my eyes. I heard a thusand nises. The whle jungle became alive with animals mving quietly and carefully all arund me. Suddenly Old Mali tk a deep breath and made a nise. I was hearing s many imaginary nises and the real nise made by Old Mali gave me a terrible fright.
    I pened my eyes and jumped ut f bed. I pulled my knife ut and held it abve my head.
