The applicatin uses a smart watch and a smart phne tgether. The watch tracks the wearer’s heartbeat. It sends the data t the prgram n the smart phne. Research shws that a persn’s heart rate will increase right befre a night terrr. S if the wearer’s heartbeat started t rise, myBivy wuld respnd. The smart watch wuld vibrate and gently wake up the sleeping persn. That was enugh t prevent a night terrr frm happening.
Patrick wre the watch fr tw weeks t get used t it. Then, Tyler turned n the applicatin. On the first night, the vibratins frm the watch prevented 10 nightmares. Patrick said he had nt slept that well in many years. Tyler and his team wn the cntest in Washingtn, D.C.The prize was $1,500. Then the grup tried t raise mre mney frm investrs, and they were surprised when they tk in ver$25,000. A grup f blue-faced birds step thrugh the grass shulder t shulder, red eyes lking arund. They lk like middle schlers seeking a cafeteria table at lunchtime. Perhaps they’re nt s different.
A new study, led by Damien Farine, an rnithlgist wh studies cllective behaviur, shws that the vulturine guineafwl f eastern Africa, like humans, have multilevel scieties. In the past, scientists assumed such scial structures required a lt f brainpwer. But the pea-brained guineafwl are revealing the faults in that assumptin.
These large birds wander acrss the landscape in packs, ften walking s clsely that their bdies tuch. They may fight each ther t maintain their strict hierarchies (等级制度), but at ther times they engage in friendly behaviurs like sharing fd.
Suspecting the guineafwl might have a scial structure, Dr. Farine and his clleagues began a thrugh study f their sciety. Fr a whle year, they made daily bservatins f 441 birds. Clured leg bands in unique cmbinatins let researchers tell the black-and-blue birds apart. They als attached GPS devices t the backs f 58 birds, which let them see exactly where every grup went, 24 hurs a day.
The findings f the research suggest that the vulturine guineafwl have a multilevel sciety. There are grups within grups within the ppulatin as a whle. There even seem t be grups f friends within the small grups. This is the first time anyne has bserved such a sciety in a bird.
And Dr. Farine emphasizes this particular bird’s tiny brain size: “They dn’t nly have small brains relative t mammals (哺乳动物), they als have quite small brains relative t ther birds,” he said.
Accrding t him, living in this kind f sciety might actually make it easier t keep track f the scial rder. Fr example, if grups are stable and a bird can identify just ne r tw individuals within a grup, it knws which grup it’s lking at — n need fr a brain that can recgnize every single animal. Multilevel scieties als let animals adjust their grup sizes based n whatever challenges they’re facing. Depending n what enemies r resurces are arund, it might make sense t travel in a cmbined grup rather than a smaller ne.
“Having a multilevel structure may nt require having a large brain,” Dr. Farine said. There may be mre birds and ther animals ut there that, althugh small-brained, have scieties as many-leveled as ur wn.
8.Accrding t the passage, what inspired Dr. Farine t carry ut the study?
    A.The guineafwl’s scial behaviur.
    B.Previus assumptins abut birds.
    C.His interest in animal brainpwer.
    D.The faults in earlier research.

    A.The research subjects.B.The research methds.
    C.The research findings.D.The research equipment.

B.The guineafwl are gd at recgnizing individuals in a grup.
C.Birds maintain scial rder by travelling in cmbined grups.
D.Small-brained animals can frm multilevel scieties.

D.T uncver clues abut hw cmplex scieties are frmed.

This muntainus area was chsen t be “a city where living nature is ttally intertwined with architecture.” Accrding t Beri, instead f cmpletely getting rid f the trees t build huses, the city’s design cnsiders the surrunding greenery. Hmes and cmmercial buildings will be cvered with trees, with gardens n the balcnies (阳台) f every flr, and rftps that are hme t miniature frests.
“I have been wrking n the idea f urban frestatin fr years,” says Beri. “In thse areas f the planet where it is still necessary t build new cities, we are planning real frest cities fr a maximum f 150,000 citizens.”
The Liuzhu Frest City will be cnnected t central Liuzhu via a railway line and a rad. It will be hme t 30,000 peple, and include cmmercial and recreatinal spaces, tw schls and a hspital. Nw, the gvernment is starting the prcess f selling land t interested develpers. “The current phase is still nging fr land selling,” says Beri. Building is expected t begin in 2020. At the same time, the firm has cpied the cncept in Lishui, a city in the sutheast f China. The masterpiece has als been given the thumbs-up by lcal gvernments here, and the develper is cllecting funds t launch the prject.
If the Chinese cities prve successful, Beri hpes that the idea will take hld acrss the wrld. “We are develping the same cncept in ther places with different climate cnditins, such as Mexic and nrth Africa,” he says.
And there is science behind the idea f planting trees t halt climate change. A study earlier this year by scientists at ETH Zurich fund that planting at least a trillin trees arund the wrld culd lck up 205 billin tnnes f carbn, nce the trees are mature, helping t ffset the effects f releasing greenhuse gases int the atmsphere.
12.Accrding t the passage, Beri hlds the belief that ______.
A.a city can be built in harmny with nature
B.climate change results frm the city develpment
C.the building f a city may cst the damage f nature
D.we shuld stp building new cities t prtect nature
13.What can we infer frm the cities designed by Beri?
A.Huses wuld be built in a huge frest.
B.Citizens will live in incnvenient areas.
C.Cities can be transfrmed t frest cities.
D.The idea will be tried ut sn wrldwide.
14.What is the attitude f the Lishui gvernment n Beri’s cncept?
    A.Supprtive.B.Neutral.
    C.Unclear.D.Critical.

A.Where the Prblem f Pllutin Is Rted B.Hw Frest Cities Are Affecting the Wrld
C.Can Frest Cities Help t Clean Up Pllutin D.Wh Is t Blame fr the Prblem f Pllutin
