Someone online sold my mailing address, so now instead of just getting letters from the few charities I can afford to support, I am also getting letters from a dozen other charities asking for my help. One of my more cynical (愤世嫉俗的) friends talked a lot about the old saying, “No good deed (行为) ever goes unpunished.” I just smiled and didn’t argue knowing it wouldn’t change his mind. My own mind, however, was remembering another moment from many years ago.
It was a windy, snowy day. I was a young dad who had saved just enough cash to buy my children a few presents for New Year. As I walked to the store I saw a man ringing a bell standing beside a kettle. Next to him was his daughter, a little girl no more than three feet tall. They got together against the biting cold. I took a one-dollar bill out of my wallet and dropped it into the kettle. As the man was thanking me, though, I felt pressure on my legs. I looked down and saw that the little girl was giving me her own thank-you hug. I smiled down at her, bent down and hugged her back. Then I went inside feeling the warmth that no winter wind could ever take away.
Thinking back to that moment in time reminded me that no good deed ever goes unrewarded. We may not always get a heartfelt hug but in time every act of giving, every act of kindness, and every act of love that we make flows from heart to heart, around the world and back to us again.
No good deed is ever wasted. Don’t let this sometimes cynical world get you down then. Share your love today! Give from your heart. Fill your life with acts of kindness.

Many people feel that dream is unique to humans. However, many dog owners will likely disagree on that. They have noticed that their dogs at various times during the sleep may shake legs, snort (哼) and sometimes growl (低声吼叫), which gives the impression that they are dreaming. These things may wonder us about whether dogs dream.
Scientists confirm (证实) that dogs probably do dream. It turns out that dog brains and human brains have many similarities during sleep cycles. Researchers used special machines to measure electrical activity in a dog’s brain and human’s brain. Scientists already knew that when humans dream, a certain part of the brain is active during sleep. Researchers discovered that the same part of the brain is active in sleeping dogs. Scientists have other data that back up these findings.
Many people dream that they are trying to move but cannot. Interestingly, part of that experience is not a dream. When people sleep, the brain produces a chemical that causes the dreamer to become temporarily paralyzed (麻痹的). Researchers think this happens so that people cannot physically act out dreams while they are sleeping. Dog brains make the same chemical. In one study during which this chemical was stopped, sleeping test dogs performed physical activities, such as standing up, sniffing around the room for imaginary rabbits, or chasing imaginary balls.
Because of these similarities, researchers believe that the content of a dog’s dream might come from the same source as a human’s dream. “People’s dreams are usually based on things they did that day,” says Dr. Samantha Hudspith. “So there is reason to believe that dogs dream about the things they’ve done that day. Of course, there will never be a way to prove this. Dogs cannot describe their dreams the way that humans can.”
28. What does the underlined phrase “back up” mean in the second paragraph?
A. Disagree. B. Record. C. Support. D. Show.
29. What happened to a sleeping dog when this chemical mentioned in paragraph 3 was cut off?
A. It woke up. B. It acted out its dream.
C. It stopped dreaming. D. It couldn't move its body.

A. By telling stories. B. By giving examples.
C. By comparing details. D. By listing differences.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. Do Dogs Dream? B. Why Do Dogs Dream?
C. Signs of Dog Dreams D. Similarities Between Humans and Dogs

A recent issue of National Geographic magazine described one of the wonders of the earth, the tiny silver ants of the Sahara desert. These ants live in areas where temperatures reach up to 70℃, as the article described it, an environment "where shoes melt (熔化)."
These tiny ants are amazing. In the Sahara desert, where most creatures avoid going out in the middle of the day to avoid high temperatures, the Saharan silver ants have evolved (进化) a number of adaptations to do just that. Scientists have discovered that several unique features of the Saharan silver ants permit them to grow well in a scorching climate.
These ants have longer legs than other ants, which keep their bodies critically greater distance away from the hot desert sand. The ants run 108 times the length of their own bodies every second at a speed of just over 3kph. And they keep track of the position of the sun, so that they always know the most direct route back to the nest, thus lowering their time spent in extreme heat. Their bodies produce proteins that resist (抵御) heat. Some other creatures produce such proteins after they come in contact with extreme heat. But since the silver ants only exit the nest for a few minutes at a time — not long enough for the protein to take effect — they produce the protein while still in the nest before they go out, or they would die before the protein could take effect.
Researchers also discovered that the ants are covered on their tops and sides with the uniquely triangular (三角的) shape of the silver hairs, which enable them to dissipate (消散) heat. The hairs help an ant's body exchange its heat to a cooler area, even under full sun conditions. This discovery inspired the scientists, for it could lead to new materials and paints that can be applied to rooftops or cars to keep them cool. And it is also expected to be applied in clinical care, wearable devices, protective clothing and other fields.
32. What does the underlined word "scorching" in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. extremely cold B.extremely cool
C. extremely mild D. extremely hot
33. Which statement can be inferred from the text?
A. The Saharan silver ants' hairs act like a tiny air-heating system.
B. The Saharan silver ants are born with the ability to track the moon.
C. The Saharan silver ants' adaptations to the desert are to be discovered.
D. Inspiration from the Saharan silver ants will bring up more new inventions.
34. When do the Saharan silver ants produce the protein that resists heat?
A. Before traveling in the sun. B. After coming in contact with extreme heat.
C. While running under full sun condition. D. After coming back to the nest from outside.
35. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Small Ants Jump the Fastest in the World B. Small Ants Hunt for Food Easily
C. Small Ants Make a Big Difference D. Small Ants Survive in the Saharan Desert

Travelling with friends can be an amazing experience where you could make lifelong memories or it could ruin(毁掉)your friendship. 36 Here are some rules you should follow to make sure your next trip with friends goes as smoothly(顺利)as possible.
37 Sure, you and your friends probably have some similar interests, but that’s not always the case. In an effort to keep everyone happy, go over travel plans and expectations ahead of time. Have each person categorize (分类) activities or sights into “must-see”, “want to see” and “would go if we have time”. Plan accordingly and make sure everyone can see some of their top attractions.
Communicate and respect each other. Everyone has personal preferences when travelling—from getting the bed closest to the bathroom or sitting in the airplane’s window seat. But sometimes things don’t go as you like. In this case, share your requirements directly with your travel companions. 38 Have a conversation when problems arise, for communication is the key.
Don’t disappear. When travelling with a group—or even just one other person—you may want some alone time. That’s completely fine, but make sure your friends know where you are and have a way of contacting you. 39 .
Get off your phone. Of course, your friends will understand if you need to take a call from a family member, or in the event of a work emergency, but other than that, try to stay off your phone. 40 After all, the appeal of this type of trip is to spend time with friends. Just enjoy it!
A. Anyway, give each other some space.
B. Include at least one activity for everyone.
C. And remember that consideration and respect go a long way.
D. At the same time, listen to their concerns and be respectful of them.
E. Don’t respond to less important work contact or send messages frequently.
F. It’s especially true of travelling in foreign countries or unfamiliar places.
G. So it’s important to make sure you and your friend(s) are on the same page.
