At times my mom has been uncomfortable seeing these qualities in me. For example, when I was 12, I went to Puerto Rico all by myself to stay with my grandmother for the summer. My mom was very nervous about it. She kept telling me how things were different in Puerto Rico, to always put on sunglasses and wear sunscreen, not to walk away from my grandmother, and other warnings. She helped me pack everything and did not leave the airport until she saw my plane take off.

Although she was worried about me, she let me go on my own. As I moved into my teens, she continued to give me space to grow and learn, even when it might have been difficult for her. When I reached my senior year, I decided to move away for college. Once again I found that I differed from my friends: while many of them wanted to close to home, I couldn't wait to be out in the world on my own. While my mom may not have been happy at the thought of my going away, she was supportive and excited for me.

One big thing I realized during my senior year, as my mom allowed me more freedom, was that she believes in me and trusts me. That means a lot. Most of my life, and especially when I was little, the main person I tried to impress in my schoolwork or other things was my mother. I knew she expected nothing but the best from me. Sometimes it was hard to live up to her standards(标准): getting a single B on my report card would make her feel bad because I knew she wanted me to have all A's.

I know that her high standards have helped me stay focused on what is important, like education, and made me who I am. I am thankful for her support and involvement in my life. She is the strongest woman I know and that's why I am so strong and independent.

Some high school students think it useless to receive higher education. Therefore, they choose not to go to college. If you're one of them, think again. Here are some reasons why you should go to college and receive a good education there.

Schools and universities are the first places to get knowledge. We take that knowledge later on to build our careers after graduation. More knowledge will be gained after you start working, but without education, that job will not be within easy reach. Knowledge leads to knowledge.

While limited within the walls of the educational places, we openly explore other cultures of the world! We come to know that ours is not the only culture. Other cultures have valuable things to share, enriching our own. Education also makes us want to travel and exchange with various cultures, getting more experience.

When there's a recession in the economy, those who attended college will be more likely to find a new job than those who only finished high school and have a limited skills set. The more education you have, the more chances you will get to improve the quality of your life as you have a better job and earn a higher salary.

When you're skillful and knowledgeable, you gain access to people of similar backgrounds and tastes. It means a good education leads to excellent networking. Good networking can benefit you a lot in your later life.

A good education makes you a more interesting person. You can talk about ideas and events instead of just other people and what's on sale in stores. An educated person doesn't gossip (说闲话), having a preference to discuss ideas and listen to what other people have to say.

    28. What can we learn about college education from Paragraph 2?

    A. It offers you a chance to study abroad.

    B. It can allow you to gain more knowledge.

    C. It can improve the quality of your daily life.

    D. It encourages you to travel around the world.

    29. What does the underlined word "recession" in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

    A. change.       B. drop.       C. growth.       D. support.

    30. How can one benefit from a good education?

    A. You can gossip about others' affairs.

    B. You definitely can earn more money.

    C. You can work well with all your coworkers.

    D. You are likely to know more excellent people with similar interests.

    31. What is the main idea of the passage?

    A. The benefits of attending college.       B. The exchange with other cultures.

    C. The access to good networking.        D. The ways of college education.

    D

Compared to dogs, cats are often considered to be cold to their human owners. It is usual for them to be indifferent when humans call their names. Are we sure that they don't understand human voices at all?

A recent study published in the journal of Scientific Reports suggests that we've been fooled. Japanese scientists found that cats can recognize their names if their owners regularly use them. In the study, scientists recruited 78 home cats. They played recordings of voices of their owners saying five words: the first four words were random words that were similar to their names while the final word was the cat's real name. Then they observed the cats' reactions, if there were any.

Most of the cats moved their ears or heads when they heard their names, while they made no reaction to other words. That suggested, "cats were paying attention to you, what you say and what you do," John Bradshaw, an expert on human-animal interactions at the University of Bristol, UK, told The Times. "And cats were just as good as dogs at learning," she added. In the study, when people called their names, cats often connected the words with prizes, such as food or play, or with "punishments" such as having a bath or going to the vet. This made cats sensitive (敏感的) to words. After the cats had been called several times, they could react to the words. But the scientists added that while dogs have evolved(进化)to follow their owners' orders, cats have not. Although cats appear to be distant, they do have special relationships with their owners.

According to study co-author Atsuko Saito, cats have evolved not to show their feelings as a survival method. One example is illness, which they tend to hide because "in the wild, no one can save them" and their enemies are more likely to pay attention to them, Saito explained.

However, technology may help bridge the communication gap between cats and their owners. There are now many mobile apps available to explain what their meows(喵喵声) mean. So, the next time you hear "meow, meow", your cat may be telling you: "Hi, you haven't cleaned my litter box recently."

    32. What did the recent study find about cats?

    A. Cats can recognize their names.        B. Cats are cleverer than dogs.

    C. Cats learn more slowly than dogs.      D. Cats are willing to follow orders.

    33. Why do cats hide their feelings especially when they are ill?

    A. They regard words and sounds as punishments.

    B. They want to protect themselves from danger.

    C. They are not sensitive to the human voice.

    D. They don't pay much attention to their surroundings.

    34. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

    A. It is difficult to understand cats' meows.

    B. Interaction with your cats is very important.

    C. Cats do have good relationships with their owners.

    D. We may know cats better with the help of technology.

    35. Where is this passage most likely to be found?

    A. In a textbook.     B. In a magazine.     C. In a travel guide.     D. In a novel.

    第二节(5小题,满分10)

Ways to Make a Great First Impression

You've heard it a million times already, but it really does take a few seconds to make that all-important first impression. Here are some easy ways for you to impress your classmates or teachers.

    ·Have a proper handshake

Before you shake hands with somebody, make sure that your hands are clean. The handshake should not be too strong or weak. Most people use their right hands, unless they have a reason to use the left.   36

    ·Be on time

When meeting someone for the first time, arriving on time is as important as breathing. You may have an excuse, but that will leave the person who hardly knows you with a bad impression.   37   It's better to be hanging around the place than be stuck in traffic.

·Introduce yourself and ask for names

Make sure you properly introduce yourself. Ask for their names in a polite way.   38   This will increase the chances of their remembering your name in the future. Always remember to stand up when greeting someone and be sure to introduce them to anyone you're with.

    ·   39

To get the most out of your discussion, try to find something common between the two of you.   40   . A person will feel more comfortable with someone they can relate to.

    A. Use body language.

    B. Make good conversation.

    C. Repeat the name and use it later in conversation.

    D. As a general rule, plan to arrive about 30 minutes early.

    E. It could be a similar taste in clothes or a common hobby.

    F. You'll be in serious trouble if you leave them with a bad impression.

    G. However, don't have your left hand in your pocket because this appears impolite.
