Spend part of a day exploring Brooklyn. Get there by walking across the Brooklyn Bridge, one of the most symbolic spans in North America. As a self-described military brat(小家伙), Kathryn Miller has always loved the armed forces. In the summer of 2020, Miller teamed up with her friend Kailyn Rowland to create a documentary for National History Day, a nonprofit organization that holds an annual contest for students. Their documentary, Women at West Point: Breaking Barriers of the Long Gray Line, tells the story of the first women who graduated from West Point in 1980.

In March, Miller and Rowlandwere announced to have been selected for a Special Recognition of Champions Award as "individuals who have made exceptional contributions to women in the Army". "What we did was never for an award or for recognition; it was about sharing the story of these women, so to receive the award was really special," Miller said.

Miller and Rowland spent countless hours working on their documentary, reaching out to the 62 women of the class of 1980 and interviewing more than 25 percent of them. "This was hours and hours of research and interviews," Miller said. "We did Face Times with the women, we met in person, we called them, and so we had so much information, so many news articles going back 40 years."

Miller, whose mom was a veteran(老兵)and dad was a teacher at the United States Military Academy, lived in West Point as a child. "I always saw female cadets(学员), and it always seemed like, 'Oh, boys and girls, that's completely normal,' so it was such a shock to me when I realized that girls didn't always have that opportunity." If you were a superhero, what would your superpower be? Would you want to fly or be invisible? Or, perhaps, you'd rather have the power to read minds? Wouldn't that be cool?

Reading minds is not as far-fetched as you might think. In fact, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have developed a wearable device that can actually express a person's thoughts and allow them to talk to a computer-without anyone else hearing.

The device, called AlterEgo, allows a person to control a computer and ask it questions without ever saying one word. When the individual wearing the device thinks of a word or a phrase but does not speak it, AlterEgo picks up the neuromuscular(神经肌肉)signals in that person's jaw and face. AlterEgo sends those signals to a computer, which is programmed to associate them with specific words.

The device is fairly accurate. In a 10-person trial, AlterEgo had a 92 percent transcription(转录) accuracy. Researchers say that number will increase over time. "Our idea was: Could we have a computing platform that's more internal, that combines human and machine in some ways and that feels like an internal extension of our own thoughts?" Arnav Kapur, a graduate student at the MIT Media Lab said.

So what effect could this have on communication? AlterEgo can change the way humans interact with computers, allowing us to silently connect with Al assistants such as Amazon's Alexa, Google's Assistant or Apple's Siri without anyone knowing. If a person is having a conversation and wants to look up a bit of information, they don't have to take out their digital device; instead they can just think of the question. AlterEgo will answer without interrupting the conversation. The device can also help people communicate in noisy situations, such as on a factory floor or in the airport.

At about 54, the average age of retirement in China is among the lowest in the world. This is a problem. Since standards were set, life expectancy has increased while the number of working adults-those whose labor, in fact, supports retirees-has begun to drop.

But persuading people to work longer is proving hard. In 2008 the government said it was thinking about raising retirement ages, but backed away with a public protest. Now it feels it can wait no longer.

The pressure to act is evident. Current retirement ages were set in the 1950s, when the average person was expected to die before reaching that stage. For most men in China the age is 60, much lower than the average of 64.2 in the OECD, a club mostly of rich countries. Yet life expectancy in China is now just two years short of the OECD average of 79, so Chinese retirees on a state pension(养老金) usually needs several more years of support from government funds than those in rich world.

In 2019 the public-pension system covered almost 1 billion adults, more than any other such organization in the world. The country's main pension fund may run out of money by 2035, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, an official think-tank, has warned.

The government appears not yet to have decided how to reform the system. The current five-year economic plan contains merely a sentence on the topic, calling for adjustment in "small steps". But its inclusion means that changes are all but certain to begin before the plan ends in 2025.

After the plan for older Chinese to work longer was revealed, it became a hot issue. On Weibo, posts tagged with "postpone the retirement age" have launched more than 100, 000 discussions. Many comments have been critical. In 2020 a survey of 96, 000 people found that more than 80% opposed later retirement. They wondered whether they would have the strength to keep working into their 60s.
