Throughout history, there have been sculptors who are prized for their willingness to push boundaries. Without their contributions, it would be difficult to imagine visual art as we now know it. Here are some of the pioneers.
    Gianlorenzo Bernini (1598~1680)
As a master of materials, Italian artist Gianlorenzo Bernini is known for his astonishing ability to create movement and bring forth emotion with his work. In his masterpiece, Pluto and Perse phone, the rough and cold stone has been turned into flesh that looks so real and soft that you just want to reach out and touch it.
    Alberto Giacometti (1901~1966)
Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti is perhaps most recognized for his slim and small sculptures, like Seated Man, with each piece measuring no more than 2.75 inches in height. Many scholars have suggested that his slim figures relate to a lack of meaning in 20th-ccntury life.
    Henry Moore (1898 ~ 1986)
Known for his abstract public sculpture, British artist Henry More's works most often focus on the theme of mother and child, who usually sit or lie in a relaxed way, with their bodies leaning backwards Moore's figures are often composed of multiple pieces, yet his clean lines allow viewers to effectively see the figures within the abstract form. Such features are very obvious in his master piece Mother and Child.
    Louise Bourgeois (1911 ~ 2010)
Most well-known for her public art, French-American sculptor Louise Bourgeois rose to international lame in 1982 after the Museum of Modern Art held her first exhibit. By this time, she was already in her 70s. Drawing from her own life experience, her sculptures often explore themes of family and death. In her representative work, Maman, Bourgeois has used a spider to stand for her mother, who died when she was a child, to show her strength and protection over her family.
    21. When did Alberto Giacometti pass away?
    A. In 1689. B. In 1966. C. In 1986. D. In 2010.
    22. Which one belongs to realistic sculpture?
    A. Maman. B. Mother and Child. C. Seated Man. D. Pluto and Persephone.
    23. What do the last two artists have in common?
    A. They became famous in their 70s. B. They are known for their public sculptures.
    C. They are from the same country. D. They explored the themes of family and death.
    B
Sherlock Holmes is an imaginary private detective created by British writer Arthur Conan Doyle in the late 1880s. Doyle's stories about the detective have been turned into movies and television shows.
Sherlock Holmes has a powerful memory method. In a recent BBC television series, he uses a memory technique called a “mind palace” or “memory palace”. In one show, for example, Holmes has been severely wounded in a shooting and searched in his mind for ways to survive. He visits rooms in his mind palace, looking for helpful memories. In one room, he finds his childhood dog, and the memory helps calm the detective.
The memory palace idea is neither Doyle's nor BBC's creation. The method for remembering has existed for thousands of years. Many language educators today teach their students how to use the method to improve their language skills.
But what exactly is a memory palace? It is a physical space that you know well, such as your home, or a school you attended, and that you can picture in your head. You then imagine placing anything you want to remember inside the memory palace, such 8s words, phrases, facts, or even the order of events.
But there are three keys to making a strong memory palace: emotion, movement and connections between the object and something permanent. Imagining things in a humorous or crazy way improves your ability to remember them. Connecting images to actions or something permanent in your palace will create lasting memories.
Now, let's try this technique to remember the materials for a pizza; flour, water, tomato sauce, and cheese, First, put down these words on cards. Then close your eyes and picture you entering your bedroom. However, it has been taken up by cups that are filled with flour, water, tomato sauce and cheese. They are watching a cooking show on your bed. Frightened by your entry, they jump up and knock each other down. Once they have got mixed, they explode and cover your bed with a huge delicious pizza!
    24. The memory palace .
    A. is an ancient memory method
    B. was created by a famous BBC show
    C. first appeared in Arthur Conan Doyle's novel
    D. is the latest method used by language teachers
    25. Which place is more suitable for your memory palace game?
    A. A fictional castle. B. Your favorite shop. C. A stranger's office. D. Your dream university.
    26. Why are emotion, movement and connections important in the game?
    A. They help people get relaxed. B. They will attract more participants.
    C. They can make study less boring. D. They help create long time memories.
    27. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
    A. A nonverbal performance. B. A creative writing method.
    C. A “mind palace” example. D. A pizza-making process.

Members of an elephant family wandering in southwestern Chin have become international stars! The group left a wildlife reserve in the southwest of Yunnan province more than a year ago and has traveled around 500 kilometers north to the suburbs of the provincial capital city of Kunming.
Along their way, the family visited farms and wandered down city streets. They even dropped in a car shop and showed up at a retirement home. At the home, some elephants attempted to visit rooms, leading a frightened old man to hide under his bed,
Wherever the family goes, they have received official red-carpet receptions. Each day, 2.5 tons of food has been laid out along their way by the local governments. Emergency workers, vehicles and drones have been deployed(部署) to follow their movements and keep away the people.
The 15 member family's excursion has also been constantly documented by major social media in China and abroad. YouTube and Weibo are full of short videos showing interesting behaviors of the animals as they continue their path across farmlands, villages and around cities. One of the most popular clips showed two baby elephants being helped out of a ditch(沟) by older members of the group. The pictures of the group sleeping received 25,000 posts and more than 200 million views.
It remains unclear why the elephants left their home, although Evan Sun, manager of World Animal Protection, says that possible reasons could include lack of food supply and, most importantly, loss of habitat. But many experts think they are just lost.
Anyway, this is a great opportunity to educate the public about the challenges that wild animals face for survival and the need for better protection from government, industry and society levels. These animals belong in the wild. We need to keep them in the wild, which is good for us and the wild animals.
    28. Why did the old man go under his bed?
    A. He was afraid of the elephants. B. He wanted to play hide and seek.
    C. He had to follow the strict order. D. He didn't want to frighten his guests.

    30. What message does the author mainly went to convey in the last paragraph?
    A. Losses of habitat in China are very serious,
    B. Elephants' behavior can be really interesting.
    C. The wild elephants are causing huge damages.
    D. Wild animals sill face challenges for survival.

Since Tesla founder Elon Musk published his White Paper On The Fifth Mode of Transportation in 2013, the concept of “Hyperloop” has caught the imaginations of engineers and investors across the world. Simply put, it is just an idea that vehicles filled with passengers or goods are sent through a nearly airless pipe at airliner-speeds of up to 1,223 kilometers per hour.
Critics(批评者) say Hyperloop may only amounts to a pipe dream that would be technically and financially impossible to achieve.
They argue that there are too many safety questions that need to be answered. What if the airless tube breaks? What if the train somehow crashes through the tube? What if earthquakes occur? Such events will be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to be engineered into the system, especially when a vehicle runs at such high seeds in a hundreds-of-miles-long airless tube.
Turning will also be extremely difficult for the high-speed hyperloop. They say that a hyperloop vehicle would need approximately 10 kilometers for a 90-degree turn at 965 kilometers per hour. This may determine how useful the hyperloop can be.
It's still unclear how much it would cost to build a hyperloop, but surely it would be in the billions of dollars. Financial documents leaked from Virgin Hyperloop in 2016 suggested its Hyperloop One would cost between $ 135 million and $ 193 million per kilometer ---significantly more than high-speed rail. Even with public funding, the ticket prices will be unacceptably high for passengers.
Last week, Virgin Hyperloop, one of the leading companies devoted to realizing Elon Musk's pipe dream, announced that for the first time it has conducted a test of its Hyperloop One with human passengers and set a new speed record; 386 kilometers per hour. It is aiming to hit 643 kilometers per hour for the next run.
“Hyperloop One wouldn't have existed unless we put it here. It is going to be that spot where the public can look and say, ‘that was a really big idea,’” said Giegel, co-founder of Virgin Hyperloop, “’but they came, they did it, and they made it a reality.’”
    32. What can we know about “Hyperloop”?
    A. It is a high-speed car designed by Elon Musk's Tesla.
    B. It is a new idea for the next generation transportation.
    C. It is a passenger train running in an airless pipe at high speed.
    D. It is a spaceship running at a speed of 1,223 kilometers per hour.
    33. What do the critics think might be achieved concerning Hyperloop?
    A. Its safety. B. Its speed.
    C. Its low building costs. D. Its cheap ticket prices.
    34. How fast did Hyperloop One run during the test last week?
    A. 386 kilometers per hour. B. 643 kilometers per hour.
    C. 965 kilometers per hour. D. 1, 223 kilometers per hour.
    35. What does the underlined “they” in the last paragraph refer to?
    A. Human passengers on Hyperloop One B. The ordinary people.
    C. Virgin Hyperloop founders and engineers. D. Visitors at Virgin Hyperloop.

    “Breakfast!” My mom called downstairs.
“Today, we will go zip lining(高空滑索)!”My dad followed up in a singsong tone.
I put on my clothes and walked down the stairs slowly.
“Hurry up, we don't want to be late!” My mom urged.
I looked out of the window. The sun was shining. When I entered the dining room, I was met with the nice smell of pancakes. All these made me feel a little bit better.
“What a beautiful day,” I told myself, “I can do it.”
As breakfast went on, I struggled with the mounting fear. It was the first time for me to try zip, lining. To make things worse, I was scared of going to high places. I had tried to get over the unreasonable fear many; many times since it had kept me away from having fun with my friends. And I was particularly fed up with making excuses to cover up my fear of height.
After breakfast, we set out in my dad's car. Along the way, the sun grew hotter, and the leather on the seats started to burn my legs while my parents were talking about the sport enthusiastically. But I was still absorbed in my fear. Eventually, we pulled up to a big park where our instructor was waiting for us
“Good morning!” he said cheerfully. “So, have you all tried this sport before?”
We shook our heads. I got more nervous while the instructor went over the safety instructions and warned us of the possible dangers of the sport.
“All right, it is time to hit the tails!” said the instructor after we fastened our safety belts. For a moment, I congratulated myself that he did not note my fear.
“It is a really good beginning,” I told myself, “How happy I would be if I could make it.”
    注意:
    1.续写词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
When we were ready, my mom and dad were asked to go first.

36.G根据空前“If you can, go outside for at least 20 minutes in the midmorning hours.”
    39. E因为后半句是具体的例子 “like a hike in the woods or a walk down on a beach that you have done on vacation”,所以前半句肯定是对这些例子的抽象概括。

    58.where/so考查定语从句。
    63. Communication考查词形转换。分析该句成分可知,所填词在句中作主语,且为专有名词,表示“计算机之间通信”,故用所给动词的名词形式Communication。
    64.was考查动词的时态和主谓一致。分析该句成分可知,所填词的主语是第三人称单数,而且该句叙述的事件发生在过去,故用所给动词的第三人称单数过去式was.
    65. to convince考查非谓语动词。It takes some time to do sth意为“花时间做什么事”,为固定搭配。
    第一节
    One possible version;
    Dear friends,
I am Li Hua from China. I have been living in Beijing, the capital city, with my mom, my dad and my little sister. My parents are usually too busy to spend a lot of time with us. Fortunately, I have a sister who is 3 years younger than me. We always studied and played together. I'm afraid I will miss her very much.
But I am very excited to study in such a beautiful country. I hope that we will get along as well as a big family.
    Thanks for your listening.
    第二节
    One possible version:
When we were ready, my mom and dad were asked to go first. The moment they set out, they yelled and screamed. Not for long, they became two little black dots and their laughter kept ringing in the air. It was obvious that the excitement took hold of my parents. But I stood there, unable to move. I could feel my legs shaking slightly and my heart beating fast. But I tried very hard to appear calm and strong.
Finally, my turn came. Without warning, the instructor gave me a gentle push. I closed my eyes and held the safety belt tightly. As I slid faster and faster along the wire, I could feel the wind blowing on my face. A few minutes later, I heard my parents' faint cheers. I opened my eyes and looked down. Suddenly, my fear gave way to excitement. The flowers below were so beautiful that I forgot my fear. Finally, I have overcome my fear of height, thanks to the instructor's gentle push.
    听力部分录音稿
    (Text 1)
M: I need to go shopping for clothes. My jeans have holes in them, and my coat doesn't fit anymore.
W: I was going to get some new sports shoes. Let's go to the department store together.
    (Text 2)
W: Shall we call a taxi? The numbers of the buses are really confusing.
M: But the theater is only three blocks away.
W: You are right. Let's walk there.
    (Text 3)
W: Sir, have you got any small change?
    M: Sorry, 1 only have a 10-olar bill.
W: 0K. It doesn't matter. Here is your change, 54 dollars.
    (Text 4)
M: Oh, no! My alarm didn't go off, and I'm late for my exam! I hope the professor will let me in the class!
W: Here, take my car to get to school faster. Don't speed, though. I'm sure the teacher will still let you take it
    (Text 5)
W: What does the teacher mean by “Drop down and give me twenty”? This is my first day of PE class.
M: He means to get down on the ground and do twenty push-ups. You'd better start, or we'll all have to run around the gym!
    (Text 6)
M: Have you ever been river bating? I'm trying to get a group of people from school to go with me. We'd go down on the Red River in our lovely state of Oklahoma. It's a beautiful river.
W: I've never done that, but it sounds fun! I loved being on the water and going sailing in a little sailboat when I lived in Tennessee. I'm sure a river boat isn't that different. Where do we get one, though?
M: Oh, you can rent them at the river. There's a boathouse there. You should come!
    (Text 7)
M: Hello, Jane. Long time no see.
W: Hi, Tom. I am busy with my final exam.
M: I see. It's normal that we are busy at the end of the term. By the way, do you have any plans for the summer holiday?
W: Yes. I'd like to travel to Mount Wuyi. But I'm afraid the hotels will be very expensive.
    M: What about camping there?
W: Camping? I've never thought about that.
M: Oh, you will like it. It's cheaper, and closer to nature.
W: But it's not safe enough, I think.
    (Tert8)
W: Are you drinking water at 8.00 in the morning? Don't you need your coffee?
M: I decided to give it up. I'm trying to stay healthy.
W: Oh, I know people with heart problems sometimes have to stay away from coffee. That must be hard.
M: I don't have a heart problem. I just think it's better for my health if I give it up. I'm afraid I'll start to have problems sleeping.
W: I used to have that problem. I'd go to bed at 10:00 and it would take me three hours to fall asleep. I knew I couldn't give up my tea, so I just allowed myself to have two cups, but not after 1:00 in the afternoon.
M: Mmm, maybe I should do that.
W: You know, most doctors say you needn't give up food and drinks completely, just enjoy the proper amounts.
    (Text 9)
W: Oh, great, Chad. You've bought another electronic toy. I can't wait to see our electric bill this month.
M: This one's for you, Jill. If you don't like it, I can always take it back.
W: Oh, no, I hope it's not one of those bread makers. Lois got one for her birthday. It takes up her whole kitchen,
    M: Nope.
W: It better not be one of those new “healthy” indoor barbecues. I don't want to gain weight just because you bought me something for the kitchen.
    M: Just open it, Jill
    W: 0K. It's a... What is it? A huge CD player?
M: No, it's a robot cleaner. You charge the batteries, set the schedule, and then it just sweeps the whole living room for you,
W: Oh, that's not so bad. But where will we put it?
M: We've got room in the bedroom. We can keep it under the bed.
    (Text 10)
M: Good morning, Hillwood High, This is Principal Smith, This week promises to be a busy one for us, so pay attention to the posters outside your classroom. I'm happy to announce that selections for the talent show will be at the end of next week, on September 21 and 22. This is your chance to show off your music, comedy or magic talent. You can sign up for one of the performance times this week in the dining hall. If you're chosen. Mr. West will invite you to practise on October 12. The talent show will be on Wednesday night, on October 18. And remember, this show usually helps us raise money for the senior class's gift to the school. Last year, we raised enough for a sofa for the reading area in our library. Speaking of the library, Reasor's Grocery will give a dollar for every book read---fifty cents to the school and fifty cents to the student. See Mrs. Gill in the library for more information. We've got a lot going on, don't we?
