Whenever we see a button, we are eager to press it because we know something will happen. This is true in most cases, for example on a doorbell and on the “on/off” button on the TV. But some buttons are actually fake, like the “close” button on a lift.

Many people are in the habit of pressing the “close” button because they don’t have the patience to wait for the lift doors to shut. But lifts’ “close” buttons are a complete scam, at least in the US—the doors will not close any faster no matter how hard you press.

It started in the 1990s when the Americans with Disabilities Act was passed in the US, making sure that all lifts stayed open long enough so that people with disabilities could enter. Only US firefighters and repairmen can use the buttons to speed up the door-closing process if they have a code or special keys.

But to normal lift riders, the buttons aren’t completely useless. According to psychologists, fake buttons can actually make you feel better by offering you a sense of control.

“Perceived (能够感知的) control is very important. It reduces stress and increases well-being,” Ellen J. Langer, a psychology professor, said, “Having a lack of control is associated with depression.”

Experts have revealed that a lot of buttons that don’t do anything exist in our lives for this same purpose. For example, many offices in the US have fake thermostats (温度调节器) because people tend to feel better when they think they can control the temperature in their workspace.

But psychologists found it interesting that even when people are aware of these little “white lies”, they still continue to push fake buttons because as long as the doors eventually close, it is considered to be worth the effort.

“That habit is here to stay,” John Kounios, a psychology professor, said, ‘‘Even though I have real doubts about the traffic light buttons, I always press them. After all, I’ve got nothing else to do while waiting. So why not press the button in the hope that this one will work?”

    21. What was the author’s main purpose in writing the article?

     A. To analyze the functions of fake buttons.

     B. To describe some different kinds of fake buttons.

     C. To explain the advantages and disadvantages of fake buttons.

     D. To explore people’ different habits when it comes to pushing buttons.

    22. What does the underlined word “scam” probably mean?

     A. Tool. B. Button. C. Trick. D. Mistake.

    23. According to John Kounios, people who press fake buttons ______.

     A. should give up this habit

     B. probably do so to kill time

     C. don’t know that what they press is fake

     D. consider what they do to be meaningless

    B

Faced with a decreasing population and dropping workforce, Japan has been increasingly turning to robots for help. Over the years, the androids have been employed to perform a large number of human tasks, including building products and providing care and companionship for the elderly. The latest addition to the Japanese “workforce” may be Model-T. Designed by Telexistence Inc., this seven-foot-tall robot is currently undergoing trials restocking (补充货源) sandwiches, drinks, and ready meals on shelves at select locations of local convenience store chains Lawson and FamilyMart.

Telexistence has received funding from technology investment company Softbank Group and cell phone service operator KDDI in Japan, with overseas investors including European passenger aircraft maker Airbus Ventures. It named its robot Model-T, a nod to the Ford Motor car that began the age of mass motoring a century ago.

Compared with the warehouse robots being used by companies like Walmart and Amazon, which are only able to accomplish single, repeated tasks, Model-T has a much wider range of movement and can be used to restock objects of various sizes, making it ideal for convenience and grocery stores.

“It is able to grasp or pick and place objects of several different shapes and sizes into different locations,” Matt Komatsu, head of business development and operations at Telexistence Inc., told CNN Business. However, Model-T is not self-controlled. Instead, it is operated by human “pilots” wearing a virtual reality (VR) headset and special gloves, which allow them to feel the product the robot is holding in their hands and guide it to the right shelf. Since the video connection between the robot and the human operator has a mere 50 milliseconds delay, the navigation (导航) process is smooth. Telexistence says the VR-controlled androids are easier to develop and repair. They are also ten times cheaper than self-controlled robots, which require complex programming

Though Model-T appears to have passed the trials, it is not quite ready to enter the labor force. Besides being a lot slower than human labour, it is also only able to lift packaged items, and cannot grasp loose items such as fruits and vegetables. Telexistence hopes to introduce a faster Model-T within the next two years.

    24. What is the main reason for the invention of Model-T?

    A. The shortage of labour force.

    B. The demands of senior citizens.

    C. The development of technology.

    D. The appeal of convenience stores.

    25. What’s the hidden message behind the name Model-T?

    A. It is an updated version of Ford Motor.

    B. It may create a new age like Ford Motor.

    C. Its design is as fashionable as Ford Motor.

    D. Its connection with Ford Motor is inseparable.

    26. What can we learn about Model-T according to Paragraph 4?

    A. It doesn’t need repairs.

    B. It performs tasks automatically.

    C. It requires complex programming.

    D. It depends largely on human’s operation.

    27. What does the last paragraph mainly discuss about Model-T?

    A. Its applications. B. Its advantages. C. Its limitations. D. Its functions.

    C

The human face is a remarkable piece of work. The astonishing variety of facial features helps people recognize each other and is vital to the formation of complex societies. So is the face’s ability to send emotional signals, whether through an unconscious red face or the trick of a false smile. People spend much of their waking lives reading faces, for signs of attraction, hatred, trust and fraud. They also spend plenty of time trying to hide true feelings or intentions.

Technology is rapidly catching up with the human ability to read faces. In America facial recognition is used by churches to track worshippers’ attendance; in Britain, by shop owners to spot past thieves. In China, it confirms the identities of ride-hailing drivers, permits tourists to enter attractions and lets people pay for things with a smile. Apple’s new iPhone is expected to use it to unlock the home screen.

Set against human skills, such applications might seem incremental (增值的). Some breakthroughs, such as flight or the Internet, obviously transform human abilities; facial recognition seems only to encode(编码) them. Although faces are unique to individuals, they are also public, so technology does not, at first sight, interfere with (干预) something that is private. And yet the ability to record, store and analyze images of faces cheaply, quickly and on a vast scale promises one day to bring about great changes to opinions of privacy, fairness and trust.

Start with privacy. One big difference between faces and other biometric data, such as fingerprints, is that they work at a distance. Anyone with a phone can take a picture for facial-recognition programs to use. Facebook's bank of facial images cannot be used by others, but the Silicon Valley giant could obtain pictures of visitors to a car showroom, say, and later use facial recognition to serve them ads for cars. Law-enforcement agencies now have a powerful weapon in their ability to track criminals, but at enormous potential cost to citizens’ privacy.

The face is not just a name-tag. It shows a lot of other information—and machines can read that, too. Again, that promises benefits. Some firms are analyzing faces to provide automated diagnoses(诊断) of rare genetic diseases, far earlier than would otherwise be possible. Systems that measure emotion may give autistic(孤独症的) people a grasp of social signals they find difficult.

    28. What do we learn about facial recognition from the passage?

     A. It is applied to catch thieves by police.

     B. It is widely applied by Chinese in many fields.

     C. It has been applied by Apple to unlock home screen.

     D. It is applied to track worshippers by American churches.

    29. What does the third paragraph mainly talk about?

     A. Facial recognition will cause great changes to minds.

     B. Facial expressions are not only unique but also public.

     C. Flight and the Internet surely transform human abilities.

     D. Facial recognition has just the same effects as other breakthroughs.

    30. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?

     A. The face is superior to other biometric data.

     B. People can keep a balance between face and privacy.

     C. The fingerprint is a powerful weapon in tracking criminals.

     D. The face has shown many benefits especially in medicine.

    31. What is the best title of the passage?

     A. Reading faces. B. Scientific breakthroughs .

     C. Nowhere to hide.  D. Human facial expressions.

    第二节 读后续写(满分25分)

    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I was in my room, unwilling to head to the community theatre with “my brother” Henry. He was just adopted by my parents recently. I was not in the mood for being onstage with him.

“Kirstie, come here," my mom called. Following her voice, I found her outside the bathroom, holding a wet book. She gave the book a shake. "Henry's book was in the bathtub. Did you put it there?” She glared at me, something she never did before Henry came to our home. I didn't wet his book on purpose. Tears of hurt clouded my eyes. Worse still, she promised to buy him a new copy. My heart ached. Henry was stealing my mother's love. He was ruining my life.

Meanwhile, Henry was just nearby, absorbed in working on a complicated rope knot(绳结)as usual. Why did a boy like him do the girly work? Far from manly!

Soon, it was time to have to set off to the community theatre. As Henry walked ahead of us to the car, my mom took me aside and said in a low voice, "It's the first time for Henry to be onstage. Be kind to him, Honey. I nodded but sighed. Being kind didn't use to be hard. But after Henry moved in, everything felt different. The theatre used to be a special place for my parents and me. With Henry involved, it didn't seem so special any more.

Finally, it was our stage time. My heart beat wildly. I forgot my annoyance at Henry for a while. As we kids lined up, ready to act out our short play, I realized how loosely I had tied the drawstring(束带)on my skirt. Sure enough, my skirt began to drop. Laughter from the audience could be heard, and even though I was wearing shorts under my skirt, I could feel my face burst into flames. However, my hands were full. If only someone could help me out!

    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Right then, Henry sensed my embarrassment._____________________________________

    Dear Sir or Madam,

I am Li Hua, a senior high school student in China. I happened to read the advertisement that you’ve posted on the Internet, employing Chinese students as part-time Chinese tutors. I am interested in it. I know that you welcome students from China and I’d like to get the job.

For me, Chinese is my native language for 9 years with a good command of spoken English as well as written English. I’m willing to help foreigners learn Chinese well and introduce Chinese culture to the world as well.

I hope I’ll be accepted as a member of yours. I’m in genuine anticipation of your early reply.

    读后续写 (满分25分)

Right then, Henry sensed my embarrassment. He immediately came to my aid. He pulled up my skirt and skillfully tied the drawstring with a beautiful knot. Seeing what Henry did for me, something deep in my mind began to change. It seemed as if my cold heart began to melt slowly and my annoyance at him gradually gave way to guilt. I regretted having treated him as a stranger. While my mind was wandering, our performance time came. It turned out a great success, thunderous applause filling the whole theatre.

After the performance, I found Henry and tapped him on the arm thankfully. “Thanks,” I said with a grateful smile on my face. I had to admit that but for his timely help, I would have been extremely embarrassed. Without his knotting skill, the performance would have been quite different. “KNOT a problem. You are my sister,” he grinned innocently, saying humorously. Surrounded by the cheerful atmosphere, I felt a flood of warmth of a big family. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad to have a new person in my corner of the world after all.
