    Saving a Tiger Named Cinderella
On an icy day in February 2012, tw hunters in eastern Russia discvered a limp bundle f fur lying in the snw. It was an rphaned cub (幼虎)! The cub hadn't eaten in days, and was enugh fr the hunters just t pick her up. Dr. Dale Miquelle, directr f the Wildlife Cnservatin Sciety's Russia Prgram, said, "A healthy tiger cub, even a three-mnth-ld ne, wuld give yu reasn t befre yu stuck yur hand t clse t its teeth and claws. But this cub had n left in her."
The hunters wrapped the cub in a cat and her t a lcal wildlife inspectr, Andrey Oryl. Over the fllwing weeks, Oryl the rphaned cub back t health. But nw he had a new prblem: What culd he d with an three-mnth-ld tiger?
The cub was an Amur tiger. a small number f Amur tigers remained in the wild, s scientists wanted t return cubs t their natural habitat. The rphaned cub was taken t a new wildlife center. The center was designed fr raising wild animals withut them t peple. It uses hidden cameras and cvered fences t keep wrkers ut f . That way, the animals dn't becme n humans.
The cub, nw named Cinderella, became the center's first tiger. Over the next year, she grew int a big, healthy tigress. In the center, she learned t hunt. By the spring f 2013, experts agreed she was t return t the wild.
They chse the perfect new fr their tiger princess: the Bastak Nature Reserve. During the next tw years, researchers watched Cinderella's . They set up cameras t snap phts. When Cinderella passed in frnt f ne f these camera , it tk her picture. Cinderella nt nly , but grew healthy and strng.

It's a Saturday night, the kids are asleep and we have n plans. Befre we fall int ur rutine and watch a mvie, I try t talk my husband int playing a card game. Uncnvinced, he cntinues tapping away n his phne. But just befre disappearing int the scial media rabbit hle, he has an idea. He lks ver me and suggests, "Why dn't we try calling ne f ur friends?"
I lk at him with raised brws, as if his suggestin is smewhat ridiculus and perhaps even scially unacceptable. Yu can't just call smene ut f the blue nw… right? But then I think again and realize that at ne pint in time, in the nt s distant past, this was the nrm. I spent my early teenage years cnnecting with friends thrugh a phne that was cnnected t a wall. It wasn't "smart", but it allwed me t keep in tuch with the latest gssip and news. We wuld chat fr hurs, 6 smetimes while I hid under my blanket in rder t avid the chance f being caught by my parents.
I culd even memrize the phne numbers f lved nes then. While I did wn an address bk—and there was always the White Pages, where yu culd lk peple up by their names—I had the cntact details f special friends, first lves and family members cmmitted t memry. I guess these days, they wuld be n my "Favrites" list in my smartphne.
Tday, many f my "favrite" peple are fllwed frm a distance thrugh scial media, and even they very rarely—if ever—wuld get an actual call frm me. The birth annuncement by my ldest friend is received thrugh catching a well-defined bump int a pht that I scrll past. The news f a divrce frm a cuple whm I had cnsidered my secnd parents when I was in middle schl arrives after a pht f a wman led me n a quest fr mre gssip. Bits f such infrmatin, a cllectin f wnderful, exciting, shcking and als bring news, may have been a part f my digital feed fr years. The idea f actually picking up the phne t recnnect with a lng-lst friend is an intimidating ne—even seeing the name f an ld friend pp up in an incming call can feel a little afraid.
I ask my husband, "Wh wuld we call?" After tssing arund a few names, we agree n sme ptential candidates—peple whse lives have taken them in different directins, but with whm we still share deep friendships.

B.cntact mre lng-lst friends thrugh scial media
C.have mre persnal cmmunicatins with their friends

Mathew White, an envirnmental psychlgist, is n a missin t give Mther Nature the respect he thinks she deserves when it cmes t human health. Fr decades, scientists and health-care prfessinals have recgnized that expsure t green spaces, such as public parks r frests, is linked with lwer risks f all srts f illnesses cmmn in the wrld. Experimental wrk has demnstrated varius physilgical respnses that ccur when peple spend time in natural envirnments: bld pressure drps, heart rate decreases, immune functin imprves, and the nervus system directs the bdy t rest and digest.
As humans increasingly ppulate urbanized areas, they are spending less and less time in natural envirnments. But befre dctrs can start advising their patients t head t the nearest park, there is an imprtant utstanding questin, says White: Hw much time in nature d yu need t generate these apparent benefits? Mst f the research that has linked health utcmes with expsure t the natural wrld didn't use frequency r duratin f park visits, but rather the amunt f green space within a certain distance f a persn's hme, White says. But "it's nt s much where yu live; it's whether yu use it r nt."
S he cllected data t estimate what dse (剂量) f nature was needed t shw benefits t a persn's health. White's grup fund the answer he was after: Spending at least tw hurs in nature per week was strngly crrelated with self-reprts f being in gd health r having high wellbeing. "I was very surprised, t be hnest," says White, wh had been expecting a much lnger time. "We had n idea that such a clear threshld f time per week wuld emerge frm the data."
He was further surprised t learn that it didn't seem t matter hw many trips t a park peple tk, s lng as they gt in their tw hurs per week. It culd be a lng visit ne day, a cuple f hur-lng trips, three visits f 40 minutes, r fur half-hur excursins. He and his clleagues speculate that, if nature's apparent health benefits are a result f being able t de-stress, then whatever pattern f green space expsure fits ne's schedule is prbably the best way t achieve that gal.
Health-care recmmendatins fr peple t spend time in nature are prbably years away, but the mvement has begun. Several rganizatins arund the wrld are wrking t prmte awareness f nature's cntributin t health. Sme researchers have used the term "a dse f nature" t evaluate the amunt f expsure needed t gain benefits. "That was kind f the deliberate medicalizatin f the language arund nature and health," says White.
    (1) White's research fcused n _____.
    A.required amunt f green space
B.benefits frm the expsure t nature
C.necessary time length f nature visits
    D.physical respnses t utdr activities
    (2) What des the underlined phrase "threshld f time" in Paragraph 3 prbably mean?
    A.Maximum time.B.Minimum time.
    C.Adequate time.D.Average time.

    A.is cnfident abut his missin
B.is willing t cperate with thers
C.has persuaded thers t accept his idea
D.has adpted the term fr his research result
    (4) What's the best title fr the passage?
    A.Respect fr NatureB.Nature as Medicine
    C.Present frm NatureD.Missin in Nature
Once I tld smene I wanted t get a master's degree f fine arts in creative writing and they tld me it was the secnd-t-wrst pst-graduatin plan they'd ever heard frm a student. Arts degrees—especially fine arts degrees, which usually cme in the frm f music, studi art, creative writing and theater—have been, ver the years, labeled useless.
It's true that fr the mst part, STEM degrees lead t higher paying jbs than liberal and fine arts degrees, and it's understandable why yung peple care abut a higher starting salary and financial security. Student lan debt is playing a rle in the physical and mental stress f yung peple.
And while STEM majrs usually have starting salaries that are $20,000 higher than thse f liberal arts majrs, by the time peple reach the age f 40, the salaries between thse wh majred in the liberal arts and thse wh majred in STEM are virtually the same. Fr example, wmen wh majr in STEM earned nearly 50% mre than scial science and histry majrs at ages 23-25, but nly 10% mre by ages 38-40, a New Yrk Times analysis reprted. S even in terms f salary, which desn't slely determine whether r nt a degree is useful, liberal arts degrees aren't all that far behind STEM.
It seems t that since peple nwadays are ging t have t wrk lnger, it's mre imprtant than ever that we actually like and care abut what we're ding. Pursuing smething enjyable, r else a passin, is cntinuusly fund t be a key factr in maintaining healthy relatinships, mental health, physical health and energy. In ther wrds, nt useless.
Art is als a methd f cmmunicatin. It allws peple frm different backgrunds, frm different walks f life t cmmunicate with each ther. In a wrld where brders and divisin seem t be all ver the place, we need art mre than ever. We need liberal arts majrs. And mre than anything, we need t be able t pursue what we lve with cnfidence, and we need t nt get caught up in the "usefulness" f what we lve.
And just because smene's primary jb isn't in their field f study—a writer wh teaches high schl fr example—desn't make the degree useless. It just means that their way f finding a stable incme is different. The same ges fr artists wh have t wrk multiple jbs t supprt themselves. They might have t find ther means f supprting themselves and their artistry. It might be cpy editing r it might be tutring.
S I am ging t graduate schl, and I am ging t graduate schl fr writing. I might be paying rent by way f vernight restaurant shifts—there's s much I'm nt sure f. But ne thing I am sure f is this—I wuld rather be a writer wrking tw jbs t pay my bills than be n writer at all.
    (1) A New Yrk Times analysis reprt is mentined in Paragraph 3 t _____.
A.analyse the ptential value f different majrs
B.put frward the pinin n majrs by example
C.prve the argument against arts degrees wrng
D.demnstrate the link between majrs and incmes
    (2) Why des the authr think learning arts is useful?
A.Fllwing ne's dream f arts keeps ne in gd cnditin.
B.Ding what ne lves builds up ne's self-cnfidence in arts.
C.Mastering arts imprves ne's understanding f different jbs.
D.Develping a lve fr arts helps ne maintain passin fr wrk.
    (3) The authr thinks that ding multiple jbs is _____.
    A.unavidableB.cmmnC.traditinalD.acceptable
    (4) What can we infer frm the passage?
A.Students learning arts are mre cncerned abut the value f life.
B.Peple tend t place incme in the first place when chsing majrs.
C.The man wh desn't lve his wrk wn't stick with the jb fr lng.
D.Graduates can find a brader space f develpment in the field f arts.
At ne pint r anther, yu've prbably heard smene speak with cnfidence n a tpic that they actually knw almst nthing abut. This phenmenn is knwn as the Dunning-Kruger effect, which refers t the finding that peple wh are relatively unskilled r unknwledgeable in a particular subject smetimes have the tendency t verestimate their knwledge and abilities.
In a set f studies, researchers Justin Kruger and David Dunning asked participants t cmplete tests f their skills in a particular dmain. Then, participants were asked t guess hw well they had dne n the test. This effect was mst prnunced amng participants with the lwest scres n the test.
David Dunning explains that "the knwledge and intelligence that are required t be gd at a task are ften the same qualities needed t recgnize that ne is nt gd at that task." In ther wrds, if smene knws very little abut a particular tpic, they may nt even knw enugh abut the tpic t realize that their knwledge is limited. Imprtantly, smene may be highly skilled in ne area, but be influenced by the Dunning-Kruger effect in anther dmain.
If peple wh knw very little abut a tpic think they're experts, what d experts think f themselves? Interestingly, Dunning and Kruger fund that althugh experts typically guessed their perfrmance was abve average, they didn't realize quite hw well they had dne. They ften make a different mistake:
What can peple d t vercme the effect? Dunning and Kruger nce had sme f the participants take a lgic test and then cmplete a shrt training sessin n lgical reasning. After the training, the participants were asked t assess hw they'd dne n the previus test. Afterward, the participants wh scred in the bttm 25 percent lwered their estimate f hw well they thught they had dne n the initial test. In ther wrds, ne way t vercme the effect may be t learn mre abut a tpic.
The Dunning-Kruger effect suggests that we may nt always knw as much as we think we d. Hwever, by challenging urselves t learn mre and by reading abut ppsing views, we can wrk t vercme the effect.
    (1)
A.Researchers fund that the training made a difference.
