As the spring and summer are finally upon us, the HOA (Homeowner Association) communities are planning events to get the neighborhood involved and interacting. Below are some great event ideas for your community.
Spring fling cookout
This is a great way to get to know your neighbors and build a sense of community. To keep the costs down, make it a potluck(自备餐宴会). If someone doesn’ t like to cook, have them bring drinks or utensils(餐具). Have a few neighbors bring their grill if it is convenient for hot dogs and hamburgers. Set it up in a buffet style to allow one to pick and choose their favorites on each table and keep things moving. Plan game areas for all ages. Finally, make a playlist. Music really sets a great mood. Make sure you have a good mix of songs for every listener.
Community-wide garage sales
It’s suitable to hold garage sales in the spring and fall. Having a neighborhood yard sale usually attracts larger crowds because there is an opportunity for lots of bargains without having to walk a long distance or car hop from location to location. If your community has a large area you could stage it as a mini flea market. Remember, one’s junk is another’s treasure!
Welcome spring
For a great children’s event, decorate a flower pot and plant a seed to welcome the spring. Adults are welcome to participate. Host a nature walk in your neighborhood. This is a great way to educate the community about green practices and conservation. If you need help with this, contact your local garden center or your community landscaper to see if you can get a volunteer for an hour or so for this event.
Movies in the park
If your neighborhood has a great open park area where blankets can be spread out, think about holding a family movie night. Movie nights are great fun for all under the stars on a warm summer night. Outdoor movie rental screens are easy to rent and set up. Family movies, such as Toy Story, Cars and Monsters, Inc, are appropriate for all to see.
21. What is the aim of HOA community events?
A. Helping people to cook food. B. Encouraging people to enjoy life.
C. Raising people’s awareness of sharing. D. Developing better community relationships.
22. What could a buffet be according to Paragraph 2?
A. A potluck with low costs and various food.
B. A great way to build confidence and relationshilp.
C. A meal that guests serve themselves from one table to another.
D. An outdoor activity held in a community with food, game and music.
23. What makes a family movie night possible in the neighborhood?
A. An appropriate family movie for all to see.
B. A warm summer night with stars in the sky.
C. An outdoor movie rental screen ready to be set up.
D. A great open park area for blankets to be spread out.

Due to a disease, Cillian Jackson, 2, can’t walk. But the boy now motors around in style, thanks to some students at his local high school.
It all started when Cillian’s doctor told his parents about a program called Go Baby Go, which provides modified (改进的) toy cars to children with limited mobility.
They looked into it, but there wasn’t a Go Baby Go branch near the Jackson family’s home in Farmington. And motorized wheelchairs can cost more than $ 1, 000. So the parents turned to the robotics team at Farmington High School and asked if the students would be willing to take on the project.
The students accepted the challenge. Using plans and models from Go Baby Go, they got to work, modifying a Power Wheels toy car to fit little Cillian and give him more freedom in his movements.
"Everything that we’ve been doing for robotics competitions could be directly related to this challenge," robotics coach Spencer Elvebak said. "The students did the programming. They did all the wiring. They did all the work."
"In education in general we tell students we’re giving them the tools to apply in the future and do something with this," Elvebak said. "Here’s a perfect example. Students do have the skills to wire, code, program and approach an engineering challenge."
The robotics students met Cillian last week after presenting him with his car last December. The toy car has been a success. Cillian’s parents usually carry him around, they said. Now Cillian has more control over where he goes. “When he gets in his car, he can stop and look at all of these things he’s never had time to explore.” said Cillian’s dad, Tyler Jackson. Cillian’s mom, Krissy Jackson, added, “It really helped with his sense of discovery and curiosity. Having the car has really given him the ability to make choices on his own.”
“The modified car allows Cillian to practice for when he finally qualifies to get a motorized wheelchair, which he will need to attend school.”his parents said.
24. What did Cillian’s parents ask Farmington High School to do?
A. Collect money for Cillian. B. Join the program Go Baby Go.
C. Make a modified car for Cillian. D. Allow Cillian to attend the school.
25. What do we know about Farmington High School’s students?
A. They won a prize for the project. B. They gave up the project halfway.
C. They carried out the project as requested. D. They had their teachers help with the project.
26. What did Elvebak say about the project?
A. It was a waste of time.
B. It was too difficult for students.
C. It had nothing to do with what students had studied.
D. It was a golden chance for students to apply what they had learned.
27. How did Cillian’s parents feel about the modified car?
A. It needed to be improved. B. It was much too expensive.
C. It helped a lot in Cillian’s life. D. It would be a hit in the market.
C
Singapore uses about two billion liters of water every day-a number it expects could double in the next four decades. That kind of consumption is adding pressure to the Asian city state to address growing concerns about global water shortage. So it’s building new technology to prepare itself for a future where obtaining clean water will be even more difficult.
Singapore is home to more than five million people and is covered in fountains, reservoirs and other water features including the world’s tallest indoor waterfall, The Rain Vortex that pumps about 45, 000 liters of water per minute. But it has no natural water sources of its own, instead relying heavily on recycled water and imports from its neighbors.
Snyder’s research facility is one of several places developing solutions for Singapore’s water dependency. The hope is to create projects that could be used across the city. "What we have become used to as reliable water may quickly change-so we have to be prepared, and we have to be thinking about the basic facilities in advance," Snyder said. "There’s a big drive to become water independent-to control our own future-and that is largely dependent on the technologies we’re developing."
Another company, Wateroam, is already taking innovation from Singapore to the rest of the region. Founded in 2014, Wateroam says it has developed a lightweight, portable filtration (过滤器) device that has already provided clean drinking water to more than 75, 000 people across Southeast Asia. Wateroam CEO David Pong said one of the most innovative aspects of the product is its simplicity. The water filtration device is no bigger than a bicycle pump, yet it can provide clean water to villages of 100 people for up to two years.
"We’ve been very blessed to have access to clean drinking water." Pong said. It’s necessary to bring the privilege to the rest to the region, and advocate that clean water is an essential aspect for life on Earth, according to him.
28. What worsens the water shortage problem in Singapore?
A. More water imports. B. The lack of technology.
C. The increasing population. D. Double water consumption.
29. How can water crisis in Singapore be eased?
A. Searching for natural water sources. B. Controlling the increase of population.
C. Importing water from more neighbors. D. Using technologies to provide clean water.
30. What do we know about the filtration device from Paragraph 4?
A. It is easy to carry and use. B. It is larger than a bicycle pump.
C. It has already been used across Asia. D. It has already been in use for two years.
31. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Clean water is an essential aspect for life on Earth.
B. Technology can help Singapore out with its water shortage.
C. The increasing water consumption is adding pressure to Singapore.
D. Singapore’s filtration device has provided many people with clean water.
D
Fog often leads to serious, costly accidents-particularly around airports, docks and highways. Monitoring visibility conditions in real time could improve public safety and save tens of millions of dollars in the transportation area alone. But conventional fog-detection systems-including satellites, visibility sensors and human observations-can suffer from poor resolution (分辨率), high cost or low sensitivity near the ground, where monitoring is quite critical.
Recently, engineers Noam David and H. Oliver Gao, both from Cornell University, developed a way to use signal data from cell-phone towers to detect atmospheric conditions that can easily develop fog. Wireless communications data are passed within networks of antenna towers (天线塔) as microwave radiation. And the change in weather conditions can affect the strength of signals received at the towers. Thus, communications data offer a low-cost, continuous means of fog monitoring.
David and Gao successfully employed this approach to predict fog around the land in Tel Aviv, Israel, for over an hour before it appeared. They identified patterns in how the strength of microwave signals is altered in response to different humidity (湿度) and temperature. Unlike satellites, the method distinguishes between ground-level fog and low-level clouds.
Communication networks are used effectively worldwide, which would make it easy to adopt this method in most regions. "In principle, we could use existing systems for day-to-day early detection of fog formation," David says. "Because system data can be received in real time, we can imagine short-term early warning against fog." He advocates careful testing in diverse parts of the world to explore the method’s limitations.
The new work shows it is possible to detect the conditions that happen before fog forms. Kelly Caylor, an environmental scientist, who was not involved in the work, says, "It’s a significant step forward. There’s something remarkable and quite satisfying about finding so many signals in what would otherwise be considered noise."
32. What can we know about the conventional fog-detection systems ?
A. They do not work very well. B. They're only effective in some areas.
C. They've been improved in transportation. D. They do not monitor the situation near the ground.
33. The underlined word "altered" in Paragraph 3 can be replaced by .
A. Emphasized. B. Generated. C. Detected. D. Changed.
34. What is Kelly Caylor’s attitude towards the new way of detecting fog?
A. Indifferent. B. Favorable. C. Critical. D. Doubtful.
35. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. Different opinions on a new way to detect fog.
B. The wide availability of communication networks.
C. The urgency of detecting fog to ensure public safety.
D. The detection of fog through signals from cell-phone towers.

How to learn with mind maps
Flashcards may help you memorise short facts in a flash. But for more complex subjects, you’ll need a study method that can help you understand, summarise and memorise loads of information effectively and without wasting any study time 36 .
A mind map is a diagram that organises facts and ideas around one central subject. It combines words, pictures and lots of colours to summarise complex information in a visual way. You can use mind maps to: study complex topics; brainstorm for a class presentation; summarise a book; or memorise lists of foreign language vocabulary. 37 : they can help you plan your future career, choose the right university or weigh up your choices for a gap year.
Mind maps activate many different parts of your brain, which leads to a deeper understanding and better memorisation of the work. 38 . But the opposite is true. As you make your map, you are already analysing and categorising information, which will save a lot of time for you. 39 . Instead, you can see the entire topic on one page.
However, there is a condition. Research shows that, for mind maps to work effectively, you have to be motivated to use them. 40 .
A. Mind maps can do just that
B. They can make studying fun
C. They can be just as useful outside of class
D. They won’t help you much if you don’t want to use them
E. It may seem like making mind maps wastes a lot of study time

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I stood by the windows of our Moscow apartment and looked outside. Old buildings blocked most of the gray winter sky, and the ground below was brown with dirty snow. I noticed a woman crossing the street, her face covered with a thick scarf.
I drew the curtains, turned on the light, andsat down on my bed with a book. The phone rang. After a minute, I heard my mom say, "Sure! Marina would love that. See you soon."
Who was that? I wondered. And what was I supposed to love? Mama walked into my room and opened the curtains wide again. "Time to get up, Marina. Uncle Gena is taking you to Sparrow Hills."
"But it’s freezing (极冷的) out," I cried.
"You’ll have fun," Mama said.
I shook my head. "Not in this weather." During the summer, I loved going to Sparrow Hills, eating strawberry ice cream and walking through the park by Moscow State University. But going there on this cold winter morning?
"Get ready," Mama said. "Uncle Gena will be here soon."
I slowly pulled on a blue sweater.
Too soon, the doorbell rang. When Mama opened the door, Uncle Gena put his backpack down and hugged me. Uncle Gena stood straight and tall. Even in the depths of the long winter, his face was sunburnt from skiing and mountain climbing. He turned to Mama and hugged her, too. "Do you have a travel mug (旅行杯)?"
"Sure," said Mama. "Would you like tea or coffee in it?"
"Just an empty one." He put the travel mug in his backpack and smiled at me. "Ready, Marina?"
"I guess." I buttoned my coat up to my nose and pulled on a warm woolen hat.
We crossed the street and walked down the steps of the station to catch the train to Sparrow Hills. Marble walls and a shiny floor made the station look like a palace of ice. Fortunately, it was warmer in the station. The train rushed into the station, an oil smell filling the air. When the doors opened, we climbed aboard.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右:
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Before long, we arrived at the foot of Sparrow Hills.
We finally arrived at the top of the hill.
