Farming is a tradition among many in South Dakota, one that is not always easy to keep in the family. But one family has survived four generations and hopes to continue long into the future.
The year was 1933 when Ed VanderWal’ s father first stepped onto the farm. Now 80 years later, Ed carries the passion( 热情) his father gave him for farming every day while working the fields on the family farm in Volga.
“ Well, I was in the first grade when my dad moved here to this farm and I grew up on the farm. And that’ s what I was interested in doing more,” Ed said. But that love of working the land didn’ t stop with Ed. He’ s passed it down to his six sons. Some of them run farms of their own now, but two of them, Scott and David, still work side by side with their dad every day.
Some people might worry that working sun up to sun down with family seven days a week would
lead to a few family spats( 争吵). But for the VanderWals, the constant time together works just fine.
“ When families work together on a farm, it’ s a challenge at times getting along. Everyone has to pull their weight and do their share. And that, of course, transfers from one generation to the next,” Scott said.
And while they all get along like any family, with good days and bad, it’ s tradition that keeps each generation teaching the next.
“ But we taught them to work with animals at a young age, like most farmers do. So it’ s nice to be able to pass that tradition onto the next generation,” Scott said.
The youngest generation of the VandcrWals, Ed’ s three grandsons and a granddaughter, all started learning farming techniques at a young age.
28. Why did Ed VanderWal devote himself to the farm? A. Because he grew up on the farm.
B. Because he was affected by his father.
C. Because he could do nothing but work on the farm.
D. Because he wanted to set a good example for his sons. 29. What can we know from Paragraph3?
A. Managing a farm is a real challenge. B. Ed has divided his farms into six parts.
C. Ed taught his sons how to work on farms. D. Scott and David own their own farms now.
30. What can be inferred from the passage?A. The VariderWals have strict family rules. B. Ed’ s tradition has great effect on the local. C. Ed’ s grandchildren will drop out of school.
D. Ed’ s farms have no lack of successors ( 继承者). 31. What’ s the best title of the passage?
A. A Farming Family. B. A Successful Farmer.
C. The Agricultural Tradition. D. The Agricultural Generation.

There are three of us in the laboratory: Jules, me and Dr Leonards. Leonards asks me to sit in front of Jules. As I do, he looks me in the eye and starts to move his face through a series of emotions⁃happy, confused, surprised, glaring. I’ m attracted by his display, feeling delight when he grins and feeling serious when his eyes narrow angrily. None of this would be a surprise, of course, if Jules were a human. But he’ s a robot head on a table.
The most special thing is that, consciously( 有意识地), there’ s no mistaking Jules for a real person. Although he has surprisingly realistic skin, his eyes don’ t fit firmly against his lids, and he has a terrible hairpiece. Yet, as I walk into the room, I experience a complex worry of feeling in his direction. It’ s not at all like entering an empty space. It’ s a bit awkward for Jules’ shining false hair. Some unconscious part of me is responding to him as if he’ s real. This matters, because if we’ re to one day live comfortably along with robots, an understanding of how we instinctively( 本能地) react to them is significant. The study of these issues is the frontier of a new scientific research: human⁃robot interaction.
Jules was built as part of an attempt to understand the emotions that can be communicated by a human. “ All the robots we’ ve built so far don’ t have that rich emotions. We wanted to build a robotic face, with small motors that mimic( 模仿) all the muscles you have, so we could discover what it could express. ” Such research is becoming increasingly important, says Dr Leonards, partly because our rapidly ageing population will soon need the help of robots with which they can effortlessly interact.
32. What does the author think of Jules?
A. He ignored him in his place. B. He didn’ t treat him as only a robot. C. He was afraid of his being there. D. He mistook him for a real person.
33. What is the purpose to build such a robot?
A. To help humans of old ages. B. To carry out a scientific research. C. To take the place of human labour. D. To make an interaction with human.
34. What does the underlined word “ grins” mean in Paragraph1?
A. Smiles. B. Shakes. C. Worries. D. Cries. 35. What may be the best title for the text?
A. Human And Robot B. Success Of Making A Robot
C. Robot Will Replace Man D. Difference Between Man And Robot

How she wanted to have a young, beautiful, and fashionable mom! Now she just wanted to get out of here. However, her mom didn’ t notice that. Mom was still in high spirits and she insisted on buying a new dress for her lovely daughter.
Now they were standing in the middle of a high⁃end clothing store and mom was holding a beautiful sweater. “ This will look good on you. Do you want it? ” mom asked Sofia excitedly.

Wearing it, she imagined she would stand out among her classmates. But just as she was about to try it on, Sofia took a closer look at her mom— a small, tired woman with a big smile; Her clothes were worn and old; The wrinkles in the corner of her eyes deepened; Her hair was too gray for her age. They found that 53 percent of those questioned in China think the world is becoming a better place. That’ s the highest percentage among the countries in the survey, followed by India with 49 percent.
When asked why they felt hopeful for the future, 93 percent of those Chinese youth said it was because advances of technology like medicine, new energy and the Internet might make life in the future easier.
However, Chinese young people seem to worry about something else. As much as 82 percent of them worry about climate change. That’ s a lot more than the number of people who care about the environmental problems in other countries. We can see that Chinese young people are quite different from their previous generations. I hope each of you can write a report on this problem after class.
